I just heard that Feist, Justin Timberlake and Timberland are writing the new jingle for McDonald's Supermac burger.

She may be selling iPods, burgers, umbrellas, or whatever else...but she also just sold-out a show here in my obscrure corner of the universe where the best seats went for $30.00. $30.00...in a high school, no less. R-E-S-P-E-C-T.

And I completely missed the sale.

I think the key word in your post is "sold-out"

I don't know if I have a lot of respect, especially ALL CAPS respect, for someone who's charging $30 for seats already when she just broke through to the mainstream.

Hell, I can still see better-known artists for less than that! Spoon tickets are like $25.

That's fucked up.

Now I'm even more annoyed.

If she can sell out a venue with $30 seats then surely the logic is she should either play a bigger venue or charge more

Wait, you're complaining about $30 concert tickets for an established (has more than one album) artist? I can't remember the last time I paid less than $45 for anybody.

I'm not particularly bothered by the iPod commercials. Yes, they're overaired, but most commercials are. I'd rather hear Feist on an iPod commercial or Wilco on a VW commercial 10 times in one evening's programming than I would most of the crappy commercial music out there. In fact, the commercial reminded me that I've been meaning to check out Feist, and I'm glad I did.

The band I mentioned before, Spoon has 6 albums out, has a shitload of critical acclaim, have played on every late night talk show, have songs on soundtracks, etc. #1 debut on Billboard's Independent Music sales chart.

And they're still charging less than $30.

That's only one example. I could give others, if you'd like.

There are people on this forum who don't even think selling your song to be used in commercials is an artistic compromise, and maybe a lot of you don't have trouble raising $30 to see a show. But making your tickets that expensive prevents a lot of people from experiencing the music live, especially younger listeners. I just think someone with two albums who's just recently built more than a cult following shouldn't be so quick to raise her price tag.

Spoon are a workhorse band. They have finally broken through to, well, not the mainstream, but something close to it with their latest release.

They're not a good comparison with Feist, who basically was on the lower end of the radar with Let It Die for a bit.

I would rather see the iPod commercial than the other one that plays 8,283 times an hour here in Canada, for Mini-Wheats cereal. Racial stereotypes, a singing piece of shredded wheat, and a poorly written jingle are much worse than Feist.

I guess the coolest thing about Feist is that "Mushaboom" is named after the town my dad lives in. I'm not joking, there's a Mushaboom, Nova Scotia. It contains a beach, a dump, an abandoned lumber mill, and my dad's house and not much else.

And she was born in the same town as my stepdad (Amherst, Nova Scotia).

That being said, I think 99% of her music is friggin' annoying and sucks hairy ass. She's probably one of the most overrated Canadian musicians ever. Shania Twain, Bryan Adams, Leslie Feist.

So who would be a good comparison? K.T. Tunstall? M.I.A.? Cat Power? They're charging $20, $25, and$25, respectively.

do you people really think Feist has a big say over how much her tickets are?

That's my point, exactly. She could've played the stadium here, and charged $45 a ticket, easily. Like BonoIsMyMuse says, most established artists charge at least that much, if not more. $30 for Feist is an absolute bargain.

And, lazarus, the thing that has me respecting her is that she didn't have to come here at all. When many performers of do a Canadian 'coast-to-coast' tour, what they mean is that it's from Vancouver to Halifax...completely omitting us here in Newfoundland. We're not exactly a huge market for anything she may be pitching, concert-wise or otherwise. She played the same small venue a few years ago before her massive success, and she's playing it again now...for that, she's got more than my respect. I'll throw a generous dollop of admiration in there, as well.

Umm, yes. There's always a choice. Whether it's the record contract you sign, the management you have, or booking agency, there's a choice you make.

And I'm still trying to figure out how Spoon is able to make a living splitting their profits 4-ways by charging $25, and Feist, who also makes money through Broken Social Scene, feels the need to charge $30. And that's not even including how much money she got from Apple.

Who the hell does she think she is? One catchy song all over the television and now you're worth $30?
