Getting There

So, I entered my first Interference B&C competition. Originally, I was really excited, thinking to myself, "Hey! Now you can show these people some of your musical tastes!" Well, that excitement became worry for a while when I realized my musical tastes are somewhat limited. I started off with not even half of enough material, and I was just trying to find enough to fill 60 minutes. Then, I found a great transition in the middle, one with a lot of restrained hope that sort of came out of an almost nothingness. It's a feeling in those middle tracks. So, I built around it. I tried to frame the fall into nothingness before those tracks, then after them gradually gain the hope into something great at the very end. It's a full emotional journey, my tracklist. The beginning is a realization that the world is tougher than you ever thought, and that feeling makes you sink. It's a terrible realization. Then, hope climbs back into the picture and you cease it and try to make the best of it. It happens to everyone by their teenage years, but how many of us make it all the way back up? This is almost a lifetime in just over an hour. As I write this, I feel I'm making it sound too serious, cause I never felt that way about it, but analyzing it, that's sort of what it is. I can hear the meaning much better than I can speak it, if that makes sense.

Playlist Title: The Red Hills House

LJ Entry explaining playlist: http://screwtape2.livejournal.com/8011.html#comments

What is man afraid of more than anything else? Is it death? Is it love? This is the story of a man, a woman and the female orgasm. The fear of which has brought two people together: a female drifter and a man with a car. The woman says, "Take me home." Her finger points to the west and higher. This woman lives in a house surrounded by red rock. The man on the other hand must resist the urge to engage this beauty sexually for fear of the female anatomy. In the orgasm there is a meeting with mortality and the heart of the universe itself. It is the revelation and confession before the dance. It is the soliloquy before the death of stars and children. When listening to the playlist envision the journey either by road of by bed. These are the final moments before the real show.

A Girl- "When I was a child, I used to play in the snow. It was my world and a place where I created. A strange effect followed that. In adulthood, I would chill when I was in the awe of love. Those singular moments would bring shivers. Love is the warm wrapping of another's wings around you. I now bring myself to be frozen in the awe of love with the hope that your wings will wrap me. May our wings bring us under the covers where the outside world is held back. I don't want to be alone anymore."

A Boy- "When I was a child, I almost died in a swimming pool. I've never been that alone in my entire life but I've never been afraid since. The nearest I ever come is when I think about others alone. Love is all I have ever wanted but love brings sex. In the orgasm, there lies the whisper of death and beating heart to silence. Then we're both alone. I don't want to be alone anymore."

A Man- "In a nightmare
To fuck
Too fragile to save the woman
She bleeds a river through the pass
Underfoot
The childhood security of life
In gasps the hand of death on her forehead
Sweat is dangerous
If we go swimming together,
Will I be accused as the murderer
As she is the one who bleeds?"

To touch
To discover
One finger down a cheek
A nose running down the other
Lips opening
Hair put down
Brushed out of a face
A blanket wrapping around
Sealing a moment inside
A kiss
A vow
A promise

A Woman- "Outside there is beautiful sunset. The kind with a purple sky and a gentle explosion of orange as delicate as straw in the wind. It is a moment when all things stop and the demons of the day rest. I miss childhood wonder. Staring at these colorful curtains before Orion comes out to play. It is like love over and over this little marble. I miss falling towards whatever dreams the night may hold. One last breath. One last lover's kiss in the presence of the awe of love. One last smile before the real show."

1. Julee Cruise- "I Float Alone" - Floating In The Night (4:35)
2. Phil Collins- "In The Air Tonight" - Face Value (5:32)
3. Miles Davis- "Miles Runs Down The Voodoo" - Bitches Brew (14:03)
4. U2- "Mysterious Ways" - Achtung Baby (4:04)
5. The Smiths- "How Soon Is Now?" - Meat Is Murder (6:41)
6. Pink Floyd- "Set Controls For The Heart Of The Sun" - Echoes: The Best of Pink Floyd (5:20)
7. Peter Gabriel- "San Jacinto" - Security (6:34)
8. Genesis- "In The Cage" - Lamb Lies Down On Broadway (8:12)
9. Kate Bush- "The Dreaming" - The Dreaming (4:41)
10. Ennio Morricone - "The Ecstacy Of Gold" - The Good, The Bad & The Ugly Soundtrack (3:24)
11. Utopia- "Overture: Mountaintop and Sunrise/Communion With the Sun" - Ra (6:54)
12. Yo-Yo Ma- "The Eternal Vow" - Classic Yo-Yo (3:00)
13. DeVotchKa- "How It Ends" - Little Miss Sunshine Soundtrack (5:39)

Total Time: 1:18:38

UP NEXT: LemonMacPhisto vs. Lancemc

Competition master list.

Have fun!

Come on, people. It'd be tragic for Screwtape's awesome tracklist to leave now.

I like Screwtape's concept, and some of his songs are better than ones on philly's, but he also has a few things that I really don't care for.

philly's is more consistent all the way through - I like almost everything on there, and I think it flows well.

So after careful consideration, I'm giving my vote to philly.

I was just about to vote for Screwtape. Sorry, I guess it would have cleared things up a bit. But both lists (actually all the lists) are really good and I didn't really want to vote without hearing them. But if I know most of the tracks, I sometimes vote that way. And I like Screwtapes list here, though PhillyFan's last track almost had me change my mind (Chicago 1 an all-time fave), because his list was strong also.

Hope it's ok with everyone to vote w/o listening occasionally, I haven't posted much lately here but I always check in to see the lists :) Never would have gotten into Radiohead, Muse, Porcupine Tree, Mute Math, among others, without Interference. So thanks everyone!

Hmm. I'm not sure what to do. Trying to use points from the groups strikes me as a little tough given the two come from totally different groups and thus their results aren't very comparable.

Shall we just manually count hardyharhar's vote and move on, or should both advance to a three-way clash? In the past, we've just gone for three-way clashes.

I'm not sure if you're saying to omit PhillyFan by counting hardyharhar's vote, but that would be grossly unfair.

Since the results were so close, maybe people wouldn't mind a three-way, but then again, some other people lost out by a very thin margin as well.

Are we going to do the same thing for those people?

It was just that hardyharhar seemed to have just missed the deadline, and his vote would have broken the tie.

But the more I think about it, the more I'm in favour of just going by past precedent of allowing both to progress to a three-way clash. I'm not seeing how close victories are relevant to that ...

For example:

Lancemc lost his round by 1 vote to LemonMacPhisto. But the standings showed that they were tied prior to the quarterfinals, 10-10. It's about the same situation as Screwtape/Phillyfan, isn't it?

... so? He lost. I'm not seeing why anything needs to be done about it.

Need I bring up the All Blacks as an example of a close and unjust lost but still aren't being let through to the semi-finals of a far more important tournament, the Rugby World Cup?

Well, I guess I'm just not understanding the rules of the competition. I thought tiebreakers were handled by points won in previous rounds.

I'm just playing devil's advocate -- I'd like to see a result that everybody thinks is fair. Whatever you guys decide.

But there is no tiebreaker in the example you provided, as one contestant clearly lost. And all previous ties we have had were simply settled through points allocation as they weren't sudden death rounds like this one. I don't think we ever articulated a policy for sudden death ties! We never do and it always happens!

So I think we should just go with the past precedent of sending both through. That's had consensus support in the past.

I think for now, we should send both through. I would like to formulate some actual plan to break ties so that we don't end up with three-way rounds, but not in the middle of a tournament. We'd just rush things and I wouldn't want anyone to feel unfairly eliminated due to that.

Well, I did outline the tiebreaker scenario back in Desert Island III, so I'm not sure why people are questioning it now.

I know it sucks for the person who loses the tiebreaker, and I understand the desire for both to get another shot, but we are basing this on the World Cup format that you wanted. You certainly don't have two teams advancing together there, so you shouldn't have two moving on here, either.

phillyfan has one more overall point than Screwtape, so he should probably be able to advance. Furthermore, he has a better overall record and vote differential as well.

That's my opinion, anyway. I won't be able to do the semifinals until the morning now, so feel free to think about it some more. I'm open to other ideas. Not sure how much I like the three-way option, though. I think it would be unfair to the winner of Heat 3 (who would face the winner here) because then that person could have potential votes taken away that they might have had if it was only two people.

Oh, you did outline a tiebreaker scenario? As is probably evident by my last few posts, I'd completely forgotten! Sorry about that.

It's by overall points, that's how I progressed during the quarters in the last game I believe.

I think it's probably the only fault of this system as opposed to the round robin one.
