Playlist Title: The Red Hills House

LJ Entry explaining playlist: http://screwtape2.livejournal.com/8011.html#comments

What is man afraid of more than anything else? Is it death? Is it love? This is the story of a man, a woman and the female orgasm. The fear of which has brought two people together: a female drifter and a man with a car. The woman says, "Take me home." Her finger points to the west and higher. This woman lives in a house surrounded by red rock. The man on the other hand must resist the urge to engage this beauty sexually for fear of the female anatomy. In the orgasm there is a meeting with mortality and the heart of the universe itself. It is the revelation and confession before the dance. It is the soliloquy before the death of stars and children. When listening to the playlist envision the journey either by road of by bed. These are the final moments before the real show.

A Girl- "When I was a child, I used to play in the snow. It was my world and a place where I created. A strange effect followed that. In adulthood, I would chill when I was in the awe of love. Those singular moments would bring shivers. Love is the warm wrapping of another's wings around you. I now bring myself to be frozen in the awe of love with the hope that your wings will wrap me. May our wings bring us under the covers where the outside world is held back. I don't want to be alone anymore."

A Boy- "When I was a child, I almost died in a swimming pool. I've never been that alone in my entire life but I've never been afraid since. The nearest I ever come is when I think about others alone. Love is all I have ever wanted but love brings sex. In the orgasm, there lies the whisper of death and beating heart to silence. Then we're both alone. I don't want to be alone anymore."

A Man- "In a nightmare
To fuck
Too fragile to save the woman
She bleeds a river through the pass
Underfoot
The childhood security of life
In gasps the hand of death on her forehead
Sweat is dangerous
If we go swimming together,
Will I be accused as the murderer
As she is the one who bleeds?"

To touch
To discover
One finger down a cheek
A nose running down the other
Lips opening
Hair put down
Brushed out of a face
A blanket wrapping around
Sealing a moment inside
A kiss
A vow
A promise

A Woman- "Outside there is beautiful sunset. The kind with a purple sky and a gentle explosion of orange as delicate as straw in the wind. It is a moment when all things stop and the demons of the day rest. I miss childhood wonder. Staring at these colorful curtains before Orion comes out to play. It is like love over and over this little marble. I miss falling towards whatever dreams the night may hold. One last breath. One last lover's kiss in the presence of the awe of love. One last smile before the real show."

God's Away On Business

Coming up with this concept has been far more difficult than I expected it to be. In my opinion it is still very loose and incredibly unclear, and I know that that might be a great disadvantage. However, I've thought about it for about two weeks and I can't seem to come up with anything more coherent so I'm just writing it the way it sounds in my mind. I see my playlist as divided into two parts: tracks 1-7 describe the setting where my character(s) live. A dark, rainy, impoverished town; a place for bankrupt deserted carnivals, circus freaks, orphans, cheap prostitutes, and back-alley abortions. While each one of these stories is clearly dark and miserable, I've always found something extremely fascinating about that dark side of human nature. Leonard Cohen's "Everybody Knows" summarizes these themes in an almost ironic and humorous tone. R.E.M's drive serves as a transition into what I consider to be the second part of my playlist. The mood and atmosphere is much more introvertive and personal...I almost see it as being narrated by a young man who has attempted to escape the world of darkness and corruption described in the first half. However, it is almost as though the world he encounters outside is just as dark and even more cold and desolate than the one he previously escaped. His loneliness is evident and his longing for love and something real makes his situation extremely dark and hopeless. There is a glimmer of hope and maybe the slight memory of a long-lost love (No One Would Riot For Less), but this is overshadowed by the reality of his situation..which eventually ends in death (Lacrimosa). I guess I chose the title "God's Away On Business" because I couldn't come up with anything better myself, and because it seems to summarize the themes of corruption, loneliness, and darkness of my playlist. I'm terribly sorry if none of this makes sense, I hope that people enjoy this playlist and if anyone is able to come up with a better concept for it I'd love to hear it ;)

Title: This Is Where Your Sanity Gives In...

Concept: It took ages for me to come up with a concept for this competition, but one day it all came to me. A Story just popped in my head and I tried to put songs to it and this is the end product. In short "This Is Where..." is the story of a Crime of Passion in which a man, finding out his wife is cheating on him, leaves his home and heads to a motel. His heartbroken thoughts soon turn to anger and this leads him to decide to kill his wife. However after doing this deed, he realises he can't live with himself and takes his own life as well. Several Songs tell each part of the story. Songs 2 - 7 are about the wife cheating on the husband and him finding out. Songs 8 and 9 deal with the time in the motel, while songs 10-12 deal with the anger taking over his mind. Songs 13-17 deal with the Murder-Suicide itself. The first and final song (especially their opening and closing lines respectively) give a brief summary of the playlist as a whole. So that's basically the story/concept of my playlist, but what I think is most important is that you enjoy it, so...please do.

Title: Peace

I'm not a religious person, but there are occasions where I feel very spiritual: seeing beautiful views in nature, and singing beautiful music in a choir. Music such as the Faure Requiem and Biebl's "Ave Maria" can move me to tears with its sheer beauty. I hear things like that and am convinced there is a god. (What a dichotomy - how can god inspire such violence and hatred in the world, but also inspire such beauty and reverence?)

I probably don't listen to as much classical music as other former music majors, but most of the classical music I do lean toward is of the choral variety. Aside from the occasional Mozart Requiem track or an opera bit I've heard here, I think most of the classical tunes that have landed in these competitions have been of the symphonic kind; I wanted to use a few choral pieces. But as you can see, it's not all classical music. I chose songs to keep the gentle mood going, and tried to choose songs that flowed together well.

So relax and listen. Let the music bring you to a peaceful place. And if you find yourself moved by any of the pieces, I shall share my box of tissues with you.

1. Antonio Vivaldi (composer) - "Nulla In Mundo Pax Sincera" - Shine Soundtrack (4:39)

4. Alison Krauss - "You Will Be My Ain True Love" - Cold Mountain Soundtrack (2:31)
5. Daniel Lanois - "Ice" - Acadie (4:26)
6. Sting - "Saint Agnes and the Burning Train" - The Soul Cages (2:43)
7. Joni Mitchell - "Urge For Going" - Hits (5:05)
8. Sufjan Stevens - "John Wayne Gacy, Jr." - Come On Feel the Illinoise! (3:19)
9. Sia - "Breathe Me" - Colour the Small One (4:34)

Title: "Subconscious Chaos"

The Concept:

The concept here is intentionally ambiguous - that is to say, many parts of it can be left up to your imagination. I want to make it clear that you can get the gist of what the theme is about from what I'm about to say, but that there are literally hundreds of details here that are totally up to you. This is merely my interpretation of my own concept. It is based in my imagination, and your interpretation will be based in your imagination.

It starts off with someone who is young, maybe 20s or early 30s -
and lost in life. The character is deeply depressed, doesn't know who he/she is, doesn't know what the hell do with his/her life, and is basically feeling like his/her whole world his black. Hence, "Paint It Black".

The character sinks deeper, and feels as though he/she has no purpose in life, and is just one of many riding on the storm of life just waiting for death, the ultimate end. A dog without a bone, an actor out alone. These first two songs basically just set the scene. As the actual story starts, the character wanders to a night club of sorts.

"Stranger In Moscow", although it has some more specific references in some of its lyrics that have little to do with the concept, in its broadest meaning is about being in a huge crowd and feeling like the absolute loneliest person in the world. That's what the character is feeling as he/she lurks around in this night club. Total loneliness, total detachment. The character has never felt this low. Spiraling down, he/she wants to ease the pain so bad that he/she turns to whatever booze and drugs he/she can get access to in this club.

"Mofo" is the character hitting absolute rock bottom. Looking for to fill that god-shaped hole. The character uses the booze/drugs HARD, and ALONE. He/she pleads to his deceased mother for answers in the middle of it all. Looking for the face he/she had before the world was made. The character keeps drinking and using and drinking and using until he/she passes out cold in an alley behind the club(or wherever your imagination says he/she should pass out). The character cries 'soothe me mother, show me mother' as he/she looses consciousness.

Now, the next eight songs are what I call the 'Dream Sequence', a sort of concept album within a concept album, if you will. The part of the story told in these eight songs is all a dream, dreamt by the character while passed out in the alley behind the night club. This sequence is, imo, the heart of the album.

It starts off with the Final Fantasy VII prelude(which itself is a variation of the prelude used in all the FF games). It is one of the most gorgeous video game pieces ever composed, in my opinion and the opinion of many others. The dream sequence is tells a story that is based in fantasy, and I wanted something that would do a good job of sounding dreamy, and beckoning the listener into the fantasy/dream land that the dream is based in.

The character finds him/herself in the middle of nowhere. Nothing as far as the eye can see in any direction except for snow, perhaps - at least in my imagination it's snow. "A Whisper", with lyrics like 'I hear the sound of the ticking of clocks, come back and look for me when I am lost' and 'Night turns to day, and I still have these questions, please just refray, should I go forwards or backwards', represent the character shouting at the sky, in the middle of nowhere, saying that he/she won't live forever and that he/she wants to figure out what to do with life and how to live it without this darkness before it's too late. The response is just a whisper coming out of the thin air. This is fantasy, remember. So the character begins to follow the sound of the whisper in hopes of finding the source.

"The Call Of The Ktulu" starts quiet and ends loud, and is long and instrumental. It just represents the whisper getting louder and louder, calling the character louder and louder and more clearly and more clearly. No words are neccessary here.

With "Kashmir", the source, which still hasn't been found, introduces itself to the character, who is still in the midst of his/her search:

"Oh let the sun beat down upon my face
Stars to fill my dream
I am a traveler of both time and space
To be where I have been
To sit with elders of the gentle race
This world has seldom seen
They talk of days for which they sit and wait
All will be revealed"

"Kashmir"'s lyrics fit my scenario very well, I think. They paint the picture of an epic journey, and the imagery is really colorful and conducive to fantasy. It is the source saying 'All will be revealed' and 'movin' through Kashmir' and 'Let me take you there, let me take you there'. The character follows the source's voice through 'the storm who leaves no trace like thoughts inside a dream', a 'yellow desert stream', floating dust, 'across the seas of years', 'along the straits of fear', and eventually starts flying inexplicably(or maybe is just carried upward by the source - I can't say it enough, total fantasy), and so on.

"Great Gig In The Sky" represents the character finding him/herself, at the end of the journey, in the sky, surrounded by fog and mist. Here, the voice of the source just starts wailing and singing with no words. The source is making sounds that don't sound human. But it has many voices, as is soon found out.

"Tomorrow Never Knows" is the mist subsiding, and the source finally showing itself and offering the character the big payoff, its words of wisdom. "Turn off your mind relax and float down-stream", "Lay down all thought surrender to the void", "That you may see the meaning of within", "That love is all and love is ev'ryone", "But listen to the color of your dreams", "or play the game existence to the end". On and on.

When it is finished with its words, the source gives the character a ride on its back, back to Earth, so that the character doesn't have to go through the journey he took to get to the sky. This ride is 'Speed Of Life'.

"Wake Up" is the source letting the character off in a different part of the land from the vast nowhere the character started in. This place is populated with people who are a little younger than the character, perhaps teens, early 20s. The character here takes what he/she has learned and acts as a prophet and tells them to always let their emotions out, say what's on their mind, and learn to embrace their imperfections, because if they repress what they feel, try to be perfect for everyone else, and not act on their true feelings, they'll lose themselves, and never discover who they really are. After this, the character starts to leave, but realizes he/she doesn't know where to go. And that's the end of the dream.

The character wakes up in the alley behind the night club just as dawn is breaking. He/she remembers the dream vividly, every last detail. It seemed so very real. It has affected the character profoundly in a way that he/she can't really understand just yet. 'Morning Bell/Amnesiac' is the character walking home at 5/6/7 AM, hungover, in a fog, stunned by the power of the dream.

"Who You Are" is the character just sitting around his apartment all day, trying to get over the hangover, strumming a guitar maybe, watching something on TV perhaps, listening to music, stuff like this, but more than anything reflecting on the dream. The character realizes that he/she learned in the dream that he/she really has to find and embrace who he/she is in order to lead a fulfilling life, but that he/she still hasn't actually figured out who he/she is. Another journey must be taken to figure it out.

"Personal Jesus" is the character finding something to have faith in before discovering him/herself. It could be religion, it could be deceased loved ones, it could be something spiritual, whatever. Totally up to the listener. The task of figuring out who you are is so massive and overwhelming and awesome(in the truest sense of the word) that it is difficult to know where to begin. This is the character's starting point. Finding faith in something.

"Soul To Squeeze" is the character setting out on the adventure of a lifetime, to find him/herself. For the first time in a LONG time, the character has some hope, but is a LONG way from knowing himself. "Where I go, I just don't know, I got to, got to, gotta take it slow'. The last words of the album are 'When I find my peace of mind/I'm gonna keep it for the end of time'. This adventure is life, and the character is still not sure what the fuck to do with it, but at least he/she can now try to live the adventure - finding him/herself - without wanting to die.

That's it. It's ambiguous as hell I know, but that's the way it came out.

As for the cover art....it's supposed to be an abstract representation of the chaos and turmoil in the subconscious of the character and, indeed, of anyone.

Tracklist Title: Suspicion & Intrigue

This playlist was originally conceived as the soundtrack to an imaginary espionage flick about a secret agent who's called upon to track down a serial killer. Ultimately, things go awry, and he finds himself on the run, leaving his lover and previous life behind for his own safety. The relationship he previously had falls apart, and he pines for his simpler life. Regardless, he has to piece his life together and finish the job. The playlist has changed a bit, but it remains a darkly sensual experience. Even though it doesn't tell the story from start to finish, pieces of the plot pop up from time to time, and I believe it does an excellent job of conjuring up the appropriate atmosphere.

Getting There

So, I entered my first Interference B&C competition. Originally, I was really excited, thinking to myself, "Hey! Now you can show these people some of your musical tastes!" Well, that excitement became worry for a while when I realized my musical tastes are somewhat limited. I started off with not even half of enough material, and I was just trying to find enough to fill 60 minutes. Then, I found a great transition in the middle, one with a lot of restrained hope that sort of came out of an almost nothingness. It's a feeling in those middle tracks. So, I built around it. I tried to frame the fall into nothingness before those tracks, then after them gradually gain the hope into something great at the very end. It's a full emotional journey, my tracklist. The beginning is a realization that the world is tougher than you ever thought, and that feeling makes you sink. It's a terrible realization. Then, hope climbs back into the picture and you cease it and try to make the best of it. It happens to everyone by their teenage years, but how many of us make it all the way back up? This is almost a lifetime in just over an hour. As I write this, I feel I'm making it sound too serious, cause I never felt that way about it, but analyzing it, that's sort of what it is. I can hear the meaning much better than I can speak it, if that makes sense.

Awakenings

This playlist is basically a hybrid concept album/film idea I've been tinkering with for a while, so what better way to finish it up here? It's a sci-fi-style idea (hence the 2001 and Star Wars references in the cover) about an astronaut lost in space who lands on an emotionally repressed planet in the classic Logan's Run/THX-1138 vein (with the Big Brother government and all). During his stay, he falls in love with a woman and they both experience love for the first time. This ideal awakens all of the repressed emotions in the rest of the people (hey, Awakenings!) and they finally strike back against the tyrannical government, oh man, it's pretty badass. In the end, the astronaut returns home with his girlfriend leaving the planet and its people finally at peace. It'll all make sense when you listen to it, I hope. It sounds a lot better in my head.

(Side note: If this were a movie, the astronaut would be Christian Bale, the girl would be Scarlett Johansson, the evil overlord would be Ralph Fiennes, the bad guy's main flunky is Tim Roth, the resident badass other than the astronaut would be Samuel L. Jackson, and some of the other characters are Zooey Deschanel and Ewan McGregor (partially making up for the eternally-shitty "The Island").

Life In One Chord

The harsh Cold War reality has been replaced by the fearful and corrupt War On Terror reality. In a bleak world of monotonous life in a rundown post-Soviet city, one man pours his soul into his guitar to avoid being trampled down and forgotten. It leads him into conflict: with the obstinate music industry, with the attitudes of friends and lovers, with the pressures of travel. But most importantly, it leads to conflict with the monolithic and monotonous reality and to a discovery of hope.

Headphones are recommended for best effect. Cover credit goes to LemonMacPhisto.

The Smuttynose Murders

The Isles of Shoals are a small group of islands located just off the coast of New Hampshire and Maine. Back in the early 1870's, six Norwegians (including two married couples) had made the journey across the Atlantic and had settled down on one of the islands, named Smuttynose. The men soon were able to establish a successful fishing business, and had begun saving their money to procure a larger boat that would help their small enterprise flourish that much more. One summer, they took in a fisherman from Prussia named Louis Wagner who was struggling to make ends meet. Wagner would assist the fishermen with their duties and be compensated for room and board at their house. There were rumors at the time that Wagner became romantically involved with one of the women.

On the night of March 5, 1873, the fishermen were docked on the mainland in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, waiting for a bait shipment to arrive. When it was apparent that the train from Boston carrying the bait would arrive too late for the men to return to the island that night, Wagner realized that the women would be alone on the island (nobody else lived on the island at the time). He had previously learned that the Norwegians were saving for a new boat and supposedly had $600 already saved. Desperate for cash, Wagner stole a small rowboat and made way to Smuttynose Island.

Not long after midnight, he went to the house, intent on stealing the money. He apparently forgot that the family had a dog, though, and the barking was enough to awaken the women. When he was recognized, he realized he had no choice and grabbed an ax nearby. He brutally murdered two of the women, while the third escaped to the other side of the island and waited in the darkness, her bare feet freezing in the cold March winter night. When Wagner was unable to locate the third woman, he instead returned to his boat and headed back to the mainland.

The woman waited all night, too terrified to move, until dawn approached. She then made her way along the island until she faced Appledore Island and the small cottage that was within shouting distance. She began to scream for help until the owner heard her and arrived to offer assistance. The proper authorites arrive at the crime scene, and the woman identifies Wagner as the killer. He is found a short time later in Boston, and is eventually hanged for the murders.

This playlist isn't a retelling of those events. Instead, it's an attempt to understand, through music, what each person involved was feeling at the time. The jealousy of the murderer, the horror of the deaths, the waiting in the freezing night, the discovery the day after, and the aftershock that followed. In some instances, lyrics aren't even needed.

Really Short Cuts

If this playlist were a movie, it would be Robert Altman's Short Cuts. Short Cuts is a film about the lives of 20-some odd characters living in or around the city of Las Angeles. It's a collection of short films in a sense, all connected by common threads: people, situations, events or just personalities. In a way, my playlist is a similar study of connections. But while Altman's stories all shared a common setting, the stories in my playlist all (for the most part) take place in different parts of the world. However, most of the characters deal with the same issues and themes.

All the tracks chosen for my list maintain a distinct focus on a particular location, or the idea of a physical setting, and how human beings embody their environments. My story isn't a straight narrative, but there is a sense of progression in the movement through time. I open with a character seeking to escape the madness of his/her own world. The obvious solution of course is to move to a new city. But there are so many choices… where to go? What follows is an examination of people at varying stages of their relationships with their settings. Some are just arriving, looking for a new start. Others are lavishing in the rewards of a fine new home. Some are at wits end, fed up and finished with their surrounding, looking to move on. And then others are past all that, looking back, maybe with regrets, maybe with a lifetime of wisdom and experience, telling parables of times past. All of these relationships are not always direct interactions between resident and locale, however. In a lot of cases it's the place that serves as a mirror to the individual's romance, or war, or quest, or personal redemption. In any case, each selection highlights a really short cut of a unique artists life and mishappening.

My playlist from the start was not going to be a concept where each song told part of a story, as I said I don’t have the brain for that, wish I did though! My concept is basically just centred around how my life kinda is. There’s a lot of gloomy moments, but plenty of reasons to keep plugging away. At the heart of this playlist is a man who is quite depressed about his life, unhappy, down in the dumps. This is the first half of the playlist, where experiences anger (Chop Suey!, Stockholm Syndrome), Sadness (Mad World, Heaven Can Wait), constant worry (This Unavoidable Thing Between Us, Don’t Forget Me, The One, The Gank). He hits rock bottom when thoughts of suicide creep into his mind (Quicksand). But all of sudden, WHAM! Life takes an unexpected turn for our protagonist. This is represented perfectly by Good Morning Good Morning, because the song goes bang and straight away wipes him out of his slumber, but the early lyrics are still despondent. But then everything changes with the lyric “heading for home you start to roam then you’re in town.” Now everyone this man sees “is full of life” as opposed to the total darkness he was seeing before. From here on there is not much of a story, just a few songs I pieced together because they express (to me anyway) happiness and are uplifting, although in most of the songs you can still see the doubt in the back of this man’s mind. The final piece is Eclipse, which expresses happiness in the music, but if you look closely at the lyrics there is still some doubt there. I wanted to end on a 100% happy note, but wanted to express that even though this man is now happier, there are still times of doubt and despondency.

My final note is that I feel that people will probably have some quandaries with my playlist, and the interpretations of some of the songs. I just want to say this is how I have interpreted the songs, and they feel in the right place to me. I tried to focus on the music and the lyrics together. If you disagree, say so, but I am proud with the turnout, so, well, deal with it I guess. :D

Thank you!

Tracklist Title: Just One Victory

I want to dedicate this playlist to someone on the board who is one of the bravest and kindest people I have ever met. I also want to dedicate it to everyone who has had a family member deal with alcoholism. It is a terrible disease. My thoughts are with everyone on Interference who has been affected by it.

This is a story about forgiveness, family and love. This is a story of a man trying to get that one victory over his alcoholism with the help of his daughter. It is surreal and symbolic. The song by song explanation can be found in the LJ entry. http://screwtape2.livejournal.com/9240.html

Embracing on a broken life. A victory that comes with a price. A life without fire and passion...is not worth living. Kill yourself before receiving...something out of all this screaming. Together lifeless creatures shall survive.

It's only human to die. A daughter without a father is dry. So in water let flames arise. It's only human to never rise...when one drowns the others shall die. So it is only human to take the dive. There will be no one left alive...if a daughter does not give her life. If a daughter does not give her life than it's murder. A father must see a human through the spirits that flow and survive. It's only human to learn through the pain of our children. Through the pain of a scarred daughter. Through the last breath in water...

Yeah, I'm working on it. That's the way I got them in the email fro Screwtape.

Yeah, I think it's something to do with how fonts change from each e-mail, I noticed that in the orignals.

Yes, hopefully that can still be edited....

The first one is correct, the second one is incorrect.

Clocks > Miss Sarajevo > Your Hand in Mine

Is correct.

I ran out of time, so some of them are still screwed up.

Hopefully everyone can figure out what they say. If I get more time later, I'll just put them in a new post in this thread.

And for some reason, my pic and cori's pic didn't come up, so I'll have to fix that when the heats begin.

This may prove to be better than the Prog Island game in terms of music quality.

 Those lists...

When are we starting the polls?

I think probably Monday or Tuesday. I know I just posted the Master List, but hopefully people were listening to the playlists all along and we can get going with this.

It's been real fun listening to these - some excellent submissions.

I figured that I would repost the groups and schedule from the other thread.

Since there has been plenty of time for people to listen, I'm thinking of just making every heat 24 hours, including the first ones, until we get to the final, which will be 48 hours. Everyone ok with that?

Yes.

Since we only have three groups in this game (as opposed to the four in Desert Island III), we'll have two wild cards so we have eight to advance to the quarters.

Wild Cards will be decided based on points. If there are identical scores, we'll use the tiebreaker system, which is the same as Desert Island III.
