Superman Returns raked in $21 million on Wednesday, which includes grosses from Tuesday night preview showings. Its opening day ranks as the 29th highest-grossing ever and eighth when counting only Wednesday starts.

Among distributor Warner Bros.' franchise resurrections, the mega-budget Man of Steel's opening Wednesday flew higher than Batman Begins ($15.1 million) and Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines ($16.5 million, including previews). It has been 19 years since the last Superman picture, while moviegoers waited eight and twelve years respectively for new Batman and Terminator pictures.

"Superman Returns defeated our expectations," said Jeff Goldstein, Warner Bros.' executive vice president and general sales manager. "We were looking at Batman Begins [as a benchmark] and hoping to hit $20 million and we exceeded $20 million." Studio exit polling indicated that 58 percent of the audience was male and that those over and under 25 years old were equally represented.

Superman Returns played on over 8,200 screens across 3,915 theaters, including 76 IMAX locations that generated about $1.2 million of the $21 million gross. Previews were conducted at around 2,500 theaters on Tuesday starting at 10 p.m., which Box Office Mojo estimates accounted for over $4 million of the reported opening day, though Warner Bros. did not reveal that figure. On Friday, the theater count bumps up to 4,065, making it the fourth widest release of all time.

I enjoyed it. My only problem with it is the miscasting of Kate Bosworth. The Lois Lane of the comics, TV shows, and movies is an aggressive, loud, ballsey "I am woman, I can do anything" type gal (and it gets her in trouble!). Bosworth, on the other hand, is just "there".

i find it funny that lois is in love with another superhero actor. james marsden aka scott summers aka cyclops from x-men :hmm:

she certainly has a type

i really liked the movie.

i thought it was fun, funnier than everyone else seems to think, though i did think Kate Bosworth was totally miscast (and all the leads seemed to be far too young).

i also think that everyone is looking at Superman 1 and Superman 2 with way, way too much nostalgia. i loved those films as a child, but they have not aged well at all (compared to, say, Star Wars, Jaws, and Indiana Jones) and are almost unwatchable today. way too campy, way too cheesy. i liked that this one had a gentle spirit, and i identified with Superman's loneliness -- he was soulful and sad, just like an alien burdened with enormous responsibility would be. and i thought the visuals were amazing, as gorgeous as anything i've seen in a movie.

was it a great movie? no, too long and tedious in certain parts, but i thought it took the spirit of the originals and did a great job updating it and making Superman -- the squarest and least interesting of all the superheros -- relevant in the 21st century and giving his character much more depth than the films from the 1970s.

interesting that you should say that all the leads seemed to be far too young. i thought the same too, but then i learned that christopher reeve was the same age as routh when the first superman film was shot.

kate bosworth is really the only gripe i had. lovely girl, but definitely lacking the spunk and fiestiness that lois has. that said, as i was watching the movie, it occurred to me that sandra bullock around the time of speed would have been a perfect lois lane.

i didn't think i'd like spacey's luthor, but i thought he did a great job. then again, i'd watch him read the back of a cereal box and think it was the greatest thing ever. ;)

as someone whose first movie-star crush was on the cape and tights-sporting reeve, i didn't even want to give routh a chance, but he eventually won me over. singer was wise when he chose to cast an unknown, just as donner had done. routh is no reeve, but he'll do. (i'm absolutely loving that he's from iowa too!)

I saw this movie last night and loved it. I watched Superman 1 and 2 for the first time about a month ago and laughed the whole way through them because I thought they were ridiculous.

Pirates will take a big bite out of that next weekend

(Reuters)The sparks were flying at the box-office this Fourth of July holiday as Warner Bros. Pictures' "Superman Returns" avoided the kryptonite of overhype and muscled its way to an estimated gross of $106 million in its first seven days of release.

The first film about the Man of Steel in 19 years, helmed by Bryan Singer and starring Brandon Routh in the role etched upon modern memory by the late Christopher Reeve, was aided by an abundance of positive reviews and favorable exit polls.

Filling the shoes of a successful counterprogramming strategy aimed at females was 20th Century Fox's debuting "The Devil Wears Prada." The PG-13 comedy, starring Anne Hathaway and Meryl Streep, was released Friday and walked down the box-office runway with an estimated five-day gross of $39.6 million. Like "Superman," "Prada" generated mostly favorable reviews and positive exit scores.

"Superman" easily captured the top spot during the three-day holiday session as the red-caped superhero flew into 4,065 theaters and left with $52.5 million. Its total box-office through Sunday was $84.5 million.

The PG-13 "Superman" was in 76 Imax theaters, where about 18 minutes of the film were in 3-D, and grossed a record $6.7 million during the seven days. The previous seven-day best for an Imax film was conjured up by "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire," with $5.1 million from 66 locations. Even with a higher screen count, the per-theater average for "Superman" was significantly higher than "Goblet of Fire."

SUPERMAN OUTPERFORMS BATMAN

"Superman," which cost about $200 million to produce, represents the second long-dormant franchise to be successfully resurrected by Warners in the past two years, "Batman" being the other.

Comparing the early returns from "Superman" to "Batman Begins," the former is doing better business. After an eight-year theatrical sabbatical, "Batman" also was released on a Wednesday and had a first-weekend gross of $48.7 million, grossed $72.8 million in its first five days and recorded $82 million in its first seven days -- about $24 million less than "Superman." "Batman" ended with a domestic gross of $205.3 million.

I thought it was great! I need to see it again. Brandon Routh is gorgeous  Kevin Spacey and Parker Posey were very entertaining. I too thought they could have cast Lois Lane better. For instance, Rachel McAdams would have been perfect as would Reese Witherspoon (although out of their price range).

Oh and the Spiderman trailer has be excited about next summer already, Spidey and Harry Potter :combust:

You can't have sex with Superman because he is an alien.

But Brandon Routh on the other hand......

If I were a woman, I would fantasize about that hunky, stud-muffin of a hottie every single minute.

I don't know what they're talking about here. Superman's gross is well below expectations and, unlike Batman Begins, word of mouth is not good. There's already talk of Singer being dropped for the sequel.

I liked the film. Routh surprised me. He was much better for the role than I initially expected. I thought Kevin Spacey was wonderful though. Not quite as good as Gene Hackman (but then again, who is?) but still great nontheless.

***X-Men III SPOILERS!!!***

But, the most important thing for me going into this film was my full-hearted expectation that it would be better than the severely disappointing X-Men: The Last Stand. Brett Ratner is a shitty director, so I knew X3 was going to be at least a little disappointing going in, but I wasn't prepared for that abomination of a film. So, all my hope then shifted to the "new" Singer project, Superman Returns. I thought, "Damn you Brian Singer, you let my X-Men die sad and alone over there! You better make this Superman project worth it!"

So ultimately, I got my wish. It was a much better sequel than X3 was, though I can't say that I wouldn't rather have had a lesser quality Superman movie in exchange for a great, Singer-directed X3.

Now, I the funniest thing about Superman Returns was the casting of James Marsden. His appearance in almost the entire movie made me think, "Wow, I wonder if Cyclops' death in the first scene of X3 was because Singer stole Marsden from the production for his own purposes in Superman?" Muhahah. Certainly a devious move if proven true.

Ooooh...both Reese and Rachel would have been great choices! I think McAdams would have had better chemistry w/ Routh than Witherspoon would have. I feel so awful for saying it, but I really do hope Bosworth is replaced.

I saw it last night and honestly I thought it was fantastic.

I watched the first two before I went...and to say that the first Superman movie is remarkable makes me laugh...I'm sorry because I know I wasn't around when it first came out and myabe it was different then, but I couldnt' sit through the whole thing

as for the second one, it was watchable and I even might say I enjoyed it...

Gene Hackman was the onlything I could actually really say I liked...He's fantastic and I am sooo glad that I got to see his performance as Lex Luthor first.
Kevin Spacey is my favorite actor, and honestly I thougth he was a terrific Lex, he looked like Gene Hackman and even sounded like him, and yes, he did play a darker Lex, but I think Kitty was pretty funny and sorta helped a little.

Also, I liked the guy who played Superman, and though I liked Christopher Reeve as SUPERMAN I hated watching him as Clark Kent, it was unbearable.

And I can't really agree about Kate Bosworth either..

pretty much Iliked the cast the end

I don't know if this is true or if he even had a "tantrum" but if so looks like Superman is already a diva

American star Brandon Routh was left furious this week after he complained the make-up used on his face at a press conference made him look pale, artificial and 'a bit wimpy'.

The actor became annoyed when he saw pictures of himself posing up next to his Lois Lane, Kate Bosworth, who, he said, looked much more natural and sunkissed.

After the Superman Returns press conference at London's Dorchester Hotel on Wednesday afternoon, Routh's aides had new darker foundation flown in for him to use in time for last night's premiere in Leicester Square.

"To say that Brandon was livid with his make-up is an understatement," said an aide.

"The problem arose when he posed for photographs beside his co-star Kate Bosworth - who has a fantastic tan - and he realised that he looked pale and artificial in comparison.

"Basically there was a problem with the shade of his tinted moisturiser - it was slightly lighter than his natural skin tone - so he asked for an expensive fake tan moisturiser to be used instead.

"A waterproof, gradual build one which develops over time was eventually found and has given him a natural, all-over golden glow.

"This is Brandon's first major movie premiere and in front of thousands of screaming fans, it is understandable that he wanted to look like a tanned, Adonis of a superhero and not a pale-skinned wimp."

In stark contrast to his all-action counterpart, Routh refused to tackle the rather embarrassing topic head-on.

Instead, he ordered his personal assistant to do it for him.

So, within minutes the film company's specialist make-up artist had been hauled in and instructed to make Routh more tanned.

It's from the Daily Mail. It won't be.

Those crazy tabloids...

I've seen this movie 4 times.

It's just an excellent movie!

Beautifully shot.

Brandon Routh is HOT and does a great job!! I'm a fan!

Kevin Spacey is brilliant.

I agree that Kate Bosworth was not up to the task. She was horrible!

BTW, Pirates sucked! It was too long and just wouldn't stop! And I was fan of the first one. Sigh!!!

Superman Returns deserves a sequel and they should keep Bryan Singer.

I'm waiting for the Superman II Richard Donner version which is being worked on now!

WHAT? What's this about? Please, tell me more!

I would love to see Richard Donner finally get the credit he deserves for Superman II!

Check out this website http://www.supermanhomepage.com/news.php

It will give you another link to a Bryan Singer interview discussing it.

The fact that they are revisiting it to give Richard Donner his due, is superb.

As of yesterday, I didn't know Richard Donner was involved but somebody else was doing what Donner intended. And then I read this Bryan Singer Interview on Superman Homepage and now i'm excited.

I thought it was one of the lamest movies I have ever seen. I would have walked out had I not been with friends (one of whom was having a nice nap). I am truly shocked by the positive responses. The actor playing Superman, whose name I forget because he is so forgettable, was basically cardboard. As a friend said, he was a decent Superboy, but certainly no Superman. Maybe I just don't care for the genre.

Me too. Isn't it supposed to be part of the new DVD box set that's coming out in November? Is it November?

I think November is right but I don't know.

I have seen so many bits here and there.

I want to see his version of the film.

And Still Superman Returns was awesome, a bit slow in some areas but awesome. I love super hero movies. I remember watching the first movies on video and such. I got goosebumps!

Also, I don't think Brandon Routh was cardboard. He had subtle changes. In his eyes, expressions. sigh!!

My dream movie would be one with the Justice League!
