Allow me to take straight from the assignment instructions to answer that question.

Attend a local authority meeting and write up your impressions. Include in your answer: the purpose of the board, name the trustees/community board members present/ who was the chairperson/what did they discuss/what is one issue that was important to the board and provide details/ were other members of the public there/ what was their role/ what was the atmosphere like-formal or informal/ did you find the meeting interesting or difficult to follow/why/ and try to write down your main impression or what struck you as funny or out-of-the-ordinary. ( 1000 words)

WHAT THE FUCK?

Ian, it sounds like you're back in grade nine.

What the hell is that for?!

It is a good idea. I'd love to make up some Velvet Underground/Bowie/Blur/whatever mixes for people.

Principles of News Journalism.

There's a second part of the assignment also designed to test my research skills rather than anything else - and they say in the instructions we should be able to find it all on the internet.

AND THIS IS A 40% ASSIGNMENT.

This is fucking retarded.

I'm trying to think of what bands to use. I've already pushed PT, and for PRR you really need the album context as their songs tend to segue in and out of each other.

Maybe I'll go for some of my obscure Kiwi bands or something.

Way to teach you nothing.

But then, I feel like most of the shit I'm doing now is teaching me nothing, just adding little bits and pieces to my general knowledge cache without enhancing my skills in any tangible way.

I'm feeling in the same boat.

This will probably be the most useful skills assignment for the year, yet it's something we should already know.

Really they should be asking us to follow up on things raised in the meeting for the research part of the assignment, instead of something vastly different.

All i really have to do is take notes for about 40 minutes and come home again.

The most famous pre-Beatles band in England, for one! Their instrumental rock is just awesome.

I feel like I'm just doing the same thing over and over again, and that points we already know are re-emphasised. But it seems some people are staggeringly stupid and that even in their third year cannot figure out how to use the LIBRARY for research or correctly do footnotes and bibliographies. For fuck's sake, people, it's not rocket science.

But do they sound anything like Radiohead?

Oh for shits sake. That's just crazy. I admit i don't do my bibliography 100%, but that's because i can't be fucked putting the indentation in the right place and nobody has pulled me up on it yet.

But i'm hoping that by the end of this year i won't have to push out 2500 word essays again. How many times do we need to prove we can regurgitate information?

I suppose at least i have 'real' assignments in my other classes to an extent, but usually they all are going to need some over-researched essay at some stage.
