several years ago, i read hard times for a book report in a history class, and hated it (i think mostly because i had to read it in order to write a paper on it). i'm reading the great divide now, my mom likes the stuff and we've got a bunch of his other books. this stuff is fascinating. it's just people. or rather, it's people, and not the distilled stuff you read in text books. i didn't get that when i was 16, so i guess if i ever finish reading this, i'll go find hard times and go through it again.

documented oral history at its finest

(or if it's not at its finest, i'd be interested in hearing some others)

yeah, i read excerpts from it for a class i took a couple years ago. according to my mom, there is a copy somewhere in the house, but no one's been able to find it. small house, but we've got a small library's-worth of books here. i suppose i'd have to return the overdue sherlock holmes if i wanted to actually check something out of the library :shifty:
