I haven't read the article yet, maybe they address it there, or it's been addressed already, but why do one character and not the other? I think that's what bothered me SO much about the CGI...

They do kind of address it, the woman playing Mon Mothma had played her before, in Revenge of the Sith, but ended up on the cutting room floor.

Are you talking about Mon Mothma?

I'm assuming they used the prequel actress because Mon Mothma wasn't in ANH(only ROTJ), and the actress they used was seen w/Jimmy Smits in prequel outtakes, and
that's who her scenes are with in this film, so it fits.

Also, I'd think they'd only use CGI if there wasn't another option.
Cushing as Tarkin
was a far more iconic performance than Mon Mothma in ROTJ. It would've been extremely difficult to re-cast one while re-casting the other was easier to accept for most people.

If you weren't talking about Mon Mothma, ignore the post.

Yeah, she was in a couple deleted scenes IIRC, and I think she's in the background in the actual film at one point.

Honestly bummed that Lucas removed that material as I felt the beginnings of the Rebellion was an important plot point for the whole saga.

Padme's character also got screwed in Clones, where more scenes about her personal/professional life were deleted for the release cut.

Thanks for the info.
Also Holy shit, I spelt her name SO wrong yesterday.

I don't know. I still don't like the CGI and because of the whole doing it for one and not the other thing, it really bugged me. Obviously the original performance was iconic and not replaceable, but I hope they don't do it for episode IX.

Also, yes, I was referring to Mon Mothma.

She did die? Oh my God.

Edit: are you sure? Still only seeing she's in the hospital.

Edit, to the edit: nope you're right... Wow.

Dying of a broken heart is extremely real, yes. If someone were to reach into your chest and literally break your actual beating heart (either by tearing it into pieces or squeezing it until it pops) then, yes, you would die from that.

Lance, have you seen Rogue One? If so, what did you think of it? Apologies if I missed your thoughts earlier in the thread.

Not yet. Probably this weekend. I'm still hoping for good things, despite all the worrying talk of CGI people. But I guess that's essentially very Star Wars since the time of the Special Editions so...

Watched Rogue One. I never imagined I'd say this, but I now have a new least favourite Star Wars film. TPM and AotC were pretty dismal, but they're at least bad in a bizarre and zany way and I never felt bored out of my skull watching a SW movie before. I felt bored for maybe 3/4 here if not more.

Stuff I liked:
- Gareth Edwards has an eye for visuals and there are some stunning, elegant shots.
- Vader was pure fanservice, but I won't lie, I did enjoy his display of villainy. And his ridiculous castle.

The bad:
- Flat, boring characters and flat boring line readings. JJ Abrams has many faults as a storyteller, but he can direct the shit out of his actors and bring out lively, natural performances and chemistry within the cast. Edwards is good with visuals and action, but he's shaky when it comes to living actors and human drama. None of the emotional beats worked for me and none of the characters clicked in any way. I'm especially disappointed with how badly the movie wasted Ben Mendelsohn, considering that Krennic was the only thing that initially caught my eye in the trailers. I could see he was trying to do something with the character but without decent direction he's just left flailing. Jyn's character suffers a lot from a super-rushed introduction - boom her family is taken away, boom she's a grown-up in jail. It made me appreciate Rey's introduction in TFA and the time we spend with Luke in ANH before the plot kicks in even more.

- The editing in the first third is just atrocious, frantically jumping from planet to planet and character to character.

- It looks great, but without any emotional engagement, the Star Wars action porn on Planet Dubai is just a brain-numbing assault.

The ugly:
- Forest Whitaker was outright terrible. I felt embarrased watching him overact.
- CGI Tarkin and Leia... ewwwww. I felt like I was watching one of my brother's video games all of a sudden. Sorry but the technology is nowhere near good enough yet to successfully simulate a living human being. Just absolutely ghastly uncanny valley stuff.

The premise of the film would IMO most naturally lend itself to a heist film, but it's like they tried to do a heist film, a war film and yet another "young hero on a personal journey with family issues" all in one.

R.I.P. Carrie Fisher :(
