Even with spring training less than two weeks away, Greg Maddux and his agent say the former Braves pitcher isn't in a rush to sign with his next team.

"People are asking me, 'Why is he waiting to choose?' " agent Scott Boras said Sunday. "And my answer is, talent doesn't wear a wristwatch. He can choose when he wants to choose."

Maddux received a two-year offer worth about $12 million from the Chicago Cubs three weeks ago and has spoken personally recently with owners or other high-ranking team officials with Los Angeles, St. Louis and Baltimore.

The San Francisco Giants also may be preparing an offer for Maddux. West Coast teams are particularly alluring to Maddux and his family, who live in Las Vegas and are building a second home in Dana Point, Calif.

Maddux told the Las Vegas Sun that four teams are interested in signing him and that he doesn't anticipate signing a deal before Feb. 16. That's two days before Cubs pitchers and catchers are due to report to spring training in Arizona.

Boras reiterated that Maddux, who turns 38 in April, always wanted to finish his career with the Braves and would have signed a three-year deal worth below $13 million annually if the Braves had made such an offer last winter. But with the Braves in cost-cutting mode this winter, they didn't offer Maddux arbitration or a contract.

While the Cubs' offer is the only one that has been reported, Boras said Maddux could have gotten far more money from at least one prominent American League team if he hadn't made it clear he wasn't keen on joining an East Coast team. For that reason, it's believed the Orioles are a longshot to land Maddux, although Boras wouldn't discuss specific teams.

"We're just sitting back and approaching each franchise differently," Boras said, "Greg had to meet with the owners of the different franchises, which he's done."

Newsday: "With that in mind, the defending American League champions are finalizing a one-year contract for more than $2 million with free-agent first baseman Travis Lee, according to multiple baseball sources. Their likely signing of Lee will create serious gridlock at the intersection of first base, centerfield and designated hitter."

ah, the final cog to the yankees wheel...
