Throw your love around
Love me love me

this is an REM appreciation thread :D
post your favourite songs if you want. post your fave memories, your best opinions of the band. just nothing negative! (well unless you really want........)

I love Murmur

Put your hair back, we get to leave
Eleven gallows on your sleeve
Shallow figure, winner?s paid
Eleven shadows way out of place
Standing too soon, shoulders high in the room
Standing too soon, shoulders high in the room
Standing too soon, shoulders high in the room

Pull your dress on and stay real close
Who might leave you where I left off?
A perfect circle of acquaintances and friends
Drink another, coin a phrase
Heaven assumed, shoulders high in the room
Heaven assumed, shoulders high in the room
Heaven assumed, shoulders high in the room

Try to win and suit your needs
Speak out sometimes but try to win
Standing too soon, shoulders high in the room
Standing too soon, shoulders high in the room
Standing too soon, shoulders high in the room
Standing too soon, shoulders high in the room
Standing too soon, shoulders high in the room

This is by far my 2nd fave band. They're amazing. They haven't really recorded anything I don't like, with the exception of 'Shiny Happy People' But if I had to narrow down a fave tune it would be 'Country Feedback'.

New album coming out next year, can't wait...

Great thread idea!

My favorite REM stuff is mostly from Automatic for the people, although, I loved Reveal! This is an incredible band that is and always will be in my top 5.........

Words cannot express how amazing this song is

Yeah!
My second favorite band (to U2) in high school. I really got into them after Out of Time came out, because it inspired me to check out the older stuff, which led me to Murmur and Life's Rich Pageant, my favorites.
Who else could move me so much with such oftentimes incoherent lyrics? Half of my favorite songs, I don't have a clue what they're about, even if I can understand the lyrics. (see Hyena, Gardening at Night, Catapult, Moral Kiosk....)
In college, I used to get pledges in my fraternity to listen to REM and try to figure out lyrics. It was pretty comical.
Anyway, while the topic is here, I'll ask this question again: Has anyone here ever subscribed to the REM site called Underneath the Bunker? It's a site of live mp3's but it costs $, and I was wondering if it was worthwhile. I'd love to find some live REM boots, but this is the only place I know of.

It's very difficult to find a song more beautiful than I've Been High.

I will definately be returning to this topic when I have the time, REM has a huge amount of respect flowing from me to them.

Ahhh a wonderful thread Nik. :D
Nightswimming I know is a huge majority favourite, and for great reason too. Its a beautifully put together song, in my humblest.
Lots of tracks off Automatic are like that. Sidewinder makes me giggle. I am like April I think, Monster is another altogether fav album. Tongue is a standout.
Green is another great one. I like so much of their stuff, I'll just be boring and list a whole bunch of songs, so I'll stop. But I think Up is also a great album, not one of their best by far, but it seems to get some negativity. Each to their own though.

:)

sometimes I feel like I can't even sing
I'm very scared for this world
I'm very scared for me
Eviscerate your memories
Here's a scene: you're in the backseat, laying down,
the windows wrap around to the sound of the travel and the engine
All your hear is time stand still in travel
you feel such peace in absolute
the stillness still that doesn't end but slowly drifts into sleep
the stars are the greatest thing you've ever seen
and they're there for you, for you alone,
you are the everything

I think about this world a lot, and I cry,
and I've seen the films and the eyes
but I'm in this kitchen
everything is beautiful, she is so beautiful,
she is so young and old
I look at her and I see the beauty of the light of music
the voices talking somewhere in the house
late spring and you're drifting off to sleep
with your teeth in your mouth
you are here with me, you are here with me
you have been here and you are everything

sometimes I feel like I can't even sing
I'm very scared for this world
I'm very scared for me
Eviscerate your memories
Here's a scene: you're in the backseat, laying down,
the windows wrap around to the sound of the travel and the engine
All you hear is time stand still in travel
you feel such peace in absolute
the stillness still that doesn't end but slowly drifts into sleep
the greatest thing you've ever seen
and they're there for you
for you alone, you are the everything
for you alone, you are the everything

ooh sorry I abandoned my thread!

I agree Skeek, I've Been High is absolutely gorgeous; so is I'll Take the Rain. and of course I dont think there's a person alive that doesn't love Everybody Hurts.

I love REM.

One of my new favorite songs of all time is Undertow.

For some reason it pulls my heartstrings...

Michael Stipe is a lyrical/melodic genious unmatched

E-Bow, the Letter
World Leader Pretend
Sad Professor
Country Feedback
Walk Unafraid
Be Mine
Half a world away
I'll take the rain
You are the everything
I've been so high

the list goes on & on & on

New Adventures In Hi Fi is among the most underrated albums of all time.

Nightswimming deserves a quiet night.
The photograph on the dashboard, taken years ago,
turned around backwards so the windshield shows.
Every streetlight reveals the picture in reverse.
Still, it's so much clearer.
I forgot my shirt at the water's edge.
The moon is low tonight.

Nightswimming deserves a quiet night.
I'm not sure all these people understand.
It's not like years ago,
The fear of getting caught,
of recklessness and water.
They cannot see me naked.
These things, they go away,
replaced by everyday.

Nightswimming, remembering that night.
September's coming soon.
I'm pining for the moon.
And what if there were two
Side by side in orbit
Around the fairest sun?
That bright, tight forever drum
could not describe nightswimming.

You, I thought I knew you.
You I cannot judge.
You, I thought you knew me,
this one laughing quietly underneath my breath.
Nightswimming.

The photograph reflects,
every streetlight a reminder.
Nightswimming deserves a quiet night, deserves a quiet night.
