I think it was fucking cool they did Wave Of Sorrow, and I hope this doesn't turn into a Scarlet-on-Kid-Jensen's-show sort of deal. Bono's definitely into the song, so I think it would be rather good to hear it on tour.

Native Son is seriously one of my five favourite U2 songs from the current decade. Vertigo? Mediocre at best.

Did they perform Scarlet just once or something? I definitely hope they decide to play it a few times on the upcoming tour (WoS)

The 90s weren't really good for b-sides, obviously the 80s were the best, but the 00s b-sides just make me bitter. Like you know, Summer Rain? Why Couldn't that have been on ? ATYCLB? Would've been better than Wild Honey.

Yep, Scarlet was done live just the once, on a BBC radio show. God, at least Like A Song's lone performance was at an actual concert. I do think WOS will appear in sets on the next tour, though I doubt it'll be a regular. I can see it filling the role Sweetest Thing and TGBHF had on Elevation.

Yeah, Summer Rain was too good for b-side status. And Smile never should have been left just for iTunes. Fast Cars should have been on every edition of HTDAAB. Ugh.

It's Bruce Springsteen.

Why he's making that face, I have no idea.
Chass' guess is that he just saw a large naked woman up in the balcony.
See, I thought it was Bruce, but I didn't want to make a guess and be wrong and have legions of outraged Springsteen fans chasing me...

That's a frightening pic, either way.

every team that hsould have lost won so far. :madspit:
fucking hawthporn could have at least taken geelong down :madwife:
Tell me about it! I'm just as glad we didn't go to that game. :grumpy:

Like A Song has only been preformed once?! WHY?!

Oh God, forgot about Smile! I've never known what HTDAAB is like without Fast Cars, but, first of all, it would've been nice to have it on the actual album, so it wasn't some random bit of excitement after YAHWEH. I dont' know what goes through their heads sometimes. I mean, I guess someone who apparently "knows al ot more than we do" knows what's best for the albums.

I don't know how anyone could ever be offended over pics of Bruce. He makes some of the strangest facial expressions

Like A Song was done at the first proper War Tour show, on 26 February 1983 in Dundee. The band claimed they had trouble keeping up with the pace of the song and promptly ditched it from the setlist.

I think U2 are probably the last people who should be tracklisting their albums. They really just don't seem to be that good at it for the most part. I guess it's because, at heart, they're a live band, not a studio band. It shows in everything they do. I just wish that this decade's non-album songs would get a chance to establish themselves live like eighties non-album songs did, e.g. 11OTT, Party Girl, She's A Mystery To Me.

I guess more people can identify with being in a club than they can with being Native American...? I don't even know the whole story behind Native Son anyway.

How many people outside Ireland can identify with the Troubles, though? Yet you see Australian crowds totally into Sunday Bloody Sunday.

Ugh well that seriously sucks.

What bugs me about the 00s tracks is that so many of the alternate versions are so much better. I honestly think, given a little more lyrical work, Always is 10% better than Beautiful Day.

Yeah, truth, I'm not exactly positive what the song's about, I just know I like it

I reckon they just couldn't be arsed to rehearse it. A Celebration disappeared pretty quickly too.

I love Always. I know it gets shit here, but I love it. I don't think it's quite as good a song as Beautiful Day, but sometimes, I simply enjoy Always more.

I hate that they just drop them, and from appearances, never attempt to go back.

I think that Always could've been brushed up (it needed a lot like I said ) But I would've liked Always, I have NEVER like Beautiful Day

The Troubles are a lot more in the public consciousness here, more in the media (in terms of films and stuff)... and there are way more Irish-descended people here than there are Native Americans. And also, U2 are Irish. Maybe Bono was thinking that he couldn't identify with Native Americans enough to sing it every night, or that the audiences couldn't, or that people wouldn't buy U2 playing a song about Native American... things. I dunno.

Yeah, truth, I'm not exactly positive what the song's about, I just know I like it

Heheh. I can't remember if I read somewhere that Native Son had some sort of real-life inspiration behind it?

random confession: I realize that Tom Petty is Fugley, but how bad is it that I was watching Jay Leno one night, waiting for Conan to come on, and the musical guest came on and was singing "Gimme Shelter". I took one look at the singer and was like..."Tom?! Tom, I love this song!" And then, slowly began to realize that was most definitely not Tom. Then had Jay Leno tell me it was Patti Smith.

and there's also the issue that SBS has been (and can be) applied to a wide variety of meanings and situations... and Bono made a point of doing that.

*scoffs hot tuna pasta*

Wow. I wasn't 100% sure that Patti Smith was a woman until fairly recently... although I can't remember if I'd ever seen a picture. From the sound of it, it might not have helped...

Yeah, too many songs seem to pretty much have been discarded without a second thought. It was surprising to see the band go back to WGRYWH and IALW on Vertigo, as it was the first time songs ditched on their debut tour had been resurrected on a subsequent tour. I really think U2 are finally starting to look BACK at their catalogue. Right up until the end of ZooTV, you see a continual process of ditching old material and working new stuff in. But from the resurrection of IWF for Popmart on, you at least see the band starting to bring things back into the setlist in addition to working the new stuff in. As this has happened at greater levels on Elevation and especially Vertigo, I'm hopeful of more on the next tour. Sure, I doubt we'll see things like Like A Song, but stuff like Wire or Twilight would rule.

OK, good points about SBS - but how about Bullet?

And honestly, Native Son is so vague that I really don't think anybody would know it's about Native Americans if Bono hadn't said anything.

Yes, it's based on the case of ... some guy whose name I've forgotten.

Ah, that's why everything went quiet, Ax was composing an essay.

Seeya dudes!

 No, I got a phone call in the middle of writing that post and my mother wouldn't stop going on about random things, so that didn't help!

Have a good one!

I Thought she was Tom Petty. How bad is THAT?

I'll always hold out a tiny sliver of hope for TUF, but I don't see it happening, unless U2 realize that they're running out of steam.

Have a good one, Ashley!

I think UF is fairly possible, given it was on the Best Of and all.
