Joyufulgirl, isn't it true that in a way all addictions are the same, they just take different forms? Someone once told me that compulsive overeating, compulsive shopping, compulsive gambling, and even addiction to message boards :shifty: are all from the same root as drug and/or alchohol addiciton?
If a person is going to be an addict, it will take SOME form. Some are more deadly than others, but all are bad for you in some way.

Yes, I think you're right although I don't know much about it. But I think it has to do with reduced dopamine levels in the brain. People with a deficiency of dopamine (which modulates the pleasure pathways) tend to overcompensate in some way with excessive behavior (overeating, gambling, abusing drugs, etc.) which in turn alters the brain and reward circuits so that the once voluntary behavior eventually becomes involuntary. So in a sense they do have the same root although they are all very complex issues.
