We leave the blubberhouses and travel to Australia's Northern Territory to sample the delights of Rum Jungle. Situated 65 kilometres south of the Territory's capital, Darwin, it was formerly a uranium mine. Now? It is one of the most polluted sites in Australia. Mining companies and government agencies alike have passed the buck for the site's rehabilitation. They probably spent so long on the grog that nobody can actually remember who did what any more.

I've tried rum straight, mixed with Coke, and mixed with orange juice, and in the first case it was vile while in the latter two it just seemed like a waste of perfectly good Coke or orange juice.

That said, the rum factory is the only thing Bundaberg in Queensland has going for it. The tour's not bad as long as you don't sample the rum ...
