Exactly. What HAPPENED to innovation?
I was talking to someone from Interference last night on MSN about U2 needing to play more songs at their concerts, and he's like "Why so bono can forget more lyrics?" And that just pissed me off, because that shouldn't be an excuse for why we get a static setlist nearly every show. Bono can't remember the damn lyrics? Get a teleprompter. And learn how to use it. I don't f'in care I just want to hear stuff from the 80s you've ignored for decades now.
And now, we have that on top of the fact that he's stopped writing anything close to visually and audibly pleasing, and now he can't even mask what he wants to sing about anymore.
I don't know.
Oh, this pisses me off. Bono does not like to rehearse, which is the primary reason why we don't get more varied and longer sets. Hey, Bono? You see those people in the audience paying good money to see you? You see those dedicated fans who support you through thick and thin and hang on your every poorly enunciated syllable? THIS IS YOUR JOB. DO YOUR JOB. Don't half-arse it. That may play with the casual, fairweather fans, but who gives a shit about them?
I know they're EYKIW's favourite card to play to defend static sets, but THEY DON'T MATTER. No, really, they don't. The band should first be playing to its most loyal fans, not to the fairweather fans. It's like everything in life, really - you give the most to those who have given you the most, to whom you are closest. It keeps the fucking business going!
I mean, sure, not everybody's going to more than one gig. EYKIW's broken records won't let us forget that. But that's not the point. When you're running a business, and somebody keeps returning to your business, they're clearly a more valuable customer than the person who pops in just the once and that's it. You'll do extra for them. So come on, U2, your loyal fans are the ones who suck in lots of casual fans, who buy whatever you try to hock off, who make sure you'll never be without a fanbase who gives a damn about the music you want to sell. Treat them with a bit more respect for fuck's sake.

Point for point EXACTLY! And Jesus, it's not like he doesn't REALIZE that a lot of people go to SEVERAL shows at a time. Especially GA people. He's verbally pointed out when he's seen people on several occasions, and the fact that he danced with Miro...what THREE? times last tour is obvious enough. He knows he's got a LOT of fans that come to several concerts, own every damn version of their albums, no matter how many different ways they release them, own the dvds, own whatever merch they can get their hands on, etc. but no, let's just keep playing to the "Casual Fan" and let's make sure they remain casual fans too, by just pumping them up with those songs that they already know.
U2, you are NOT the Rolling Stones, there's no reason for you to cater to your fans in such a way, you're not that old yet, and you still have a lot of creativity in you if you'd just let it out.

Also, the argument about the high tech videos etc as a reason for static sets is a farce.
This extra technology makes it EASIER to play songs out of a perceived order. And video packages? Surely they are smart enough to have each song's visuals in it's own self contained whatever.

If you asked this to my sister ten years ago, you would be in a poor condition right about now.
That's what I've been saying for YEARS. I don't at all get how playing stadium shows is somehow meant to mean static sets. I accept it DOES in U2 world. But I'm willing to bet that if you look at Springsteen's sets for his ten nights at Giants Stadium or wherever it was, they were varied and I doubt he skimps on the visual presentation. I have utterly no doubt Ashley can clarify the matter and correct me if I'm wrong.

U2 is the only post-punk band to go mega. And there's still some leftovers from what a band was meant to be like after punk (you know the whole sell out thing) that U2 has had to deal with as opposed to how the baby boomer bands (the Stones, the Who) conducted business.
Hell I don't like half of what U2 have become. When I got into U2, they were just a little band from Ireland that noone had ever heard of and then UABRS made them a bit famous, and Live Aid a bit more famous and then JT made them mega. I don't like the ipod ad, the Grammy arse kissing etc but I accept that that is what a big band might have to do these days to be relevant to today's 16 year olds, short of wearing bling and having naked ho's in their videos.
I suppose that they're having to rewrite the rule book of "how a band behaves" when they're 48 years old.

EXACTLY. Ugh. If you know you have a shitload of casuals, why not expose them to the depth of your catalogue? Get them MORE interested so that they buy MORE albums? "Hey, shit, that Wire song sounded cool, I need to buy War!" rather than "I loved With Or Without You live, let's play that Best Of U2 album I own!"
And I hate this assumption that casual fans are somehow stupid fools who only know the biggest hits. I've told these stories before, but I've taken casuals to shows and songs they've said were highlights were An Cat Dubh, Party Girl, Gloria, The Electric Co., and One Tree Hill. My mother, a casual fan, was STUNNED that U2 didn't play Silver And Gold. Seriously, she can't believe it.

I just find Red to be very cynical commercialism. "Hey, how can we get some customers from beyond our core demographic? Hmm, Africa!"
