Grindhouse - 10/10

(copied from my Grindhouse thread)

ust got back from an advanced showing in town. What an amazing night.

Seriously, this film was easily the most utterly satisfying movie experience I've had in a good year. Planet Terror was WAY better than I expected. Probably Rodriguez' (Spell that right?) best film to date. It has an AMAZING title sequence too. (Rose McGowen fans will know what I'm talking about). And speaking of Rose, she is utterly GORGEOUS in this film, and she kicks uncountable ass in it.

Death Proof was a bit of a disappointment, given Tarantino's extremely high caliber back catalogue. This was definitely more Kill Bill than Pulp Fiction, and definitely unlike anything he's ever done before. There's a ton of dialogue, but only half of it is really captivating. Nowhere near as memorable or interesting as anything in Pulp Fiction. But Death Proof has two things Pulp Fiction didn't have: mindblowing car chases, and Kurt Russell. Honestly, Russell has crafted another legendary role here that you really have to see to believe. Stuntman Mike makes this film what it is. The enormous cast of gorgeous women doesn't hurt either.

I have to say though that my favorite part of Grindhouse is the foux movie trailers. Machete is being made into a full movie. Once you see the trailer, you'll know why. It looks insane. Of the other three trailers, Thanksgiving was easily the most shocking, and in itself was probably the most bloody and disgusting thing I've seen in a long time. If you get squeemish from Goodfella's, the Thanksgiving trailer alone will make you hurl all over the floor (although Planet Terror will asure that long before Thanksgiving comes on ). The other two trailers are both hilarious, especially Werewolf Women of the SS. When a certain actor makes a surprise cameo in this trailer, I nearly laughed so hard I shit myself. It's amazing. I loved it.

Overall I have to give Grandhouse a 10/10. The movies themselves aren't amazing. Death Proof is probably the weakest Tarantino flick yet on its own. But you have to experience this as a whole cohesive project. It achieves what it sets out to do and FAR surpasses all expectations. It's easily the most entertaining 3+ hours I've spend in a theatre in a looooong time.

How can you give something "disappointing" a 10/10?

Death Proof was only disappointing if you judge it on its own legs as a film and compare it to Tarantino's other work. In that case it's still probably a 7 or an 8, which is still fantastic. But it's only one small part of a larger vision, which excells in every way. It makes going to the movies an exhilarating and fun experience again.

How graphic is Grindhouse in comparison to other Tarantino/Rodriguez movies?

Planet Terror and the Thanksgiving trailer make Kill Bill look like Care Bears. How's that?

Death Proof isn't nearly as graphic as Kill Bill, as there is only one reallly gory death scene in it.

But yeah, as a whole, Grindhouse is a fucking gore-fest.

I was really rooting for him to beat the mechanic to a pulp in that scene with the wrench. Billy Bob's character was just so abrasive, and very well acted.

I have new respect for J Lo as an actress after seeing this, too. She was the biggest head case of the whole bunch (and that's saying a lot), but she kept me guessing. What I think I liked most was how understated a lot of things were in this movie. With her storyline especially, things could've been blown up to the point of melodrama, and that would've wrecked the movie.

Casino Royale. 7.5/10

Felt more like old-time Bond...not so many gadgets and things. I don't know that I buy Daniel Craig as Bond (he's almost too cold and aloof), but he did have a very nice body to ogle during the beach scenes. Really great shots of Venice as well. Fun movie after a long week.

I'm fairly convinced Planet Terror will make me vomit, but Death Proof doesn't look as bad.

Just got home from seeing Grind House and yes I must agree with Lancemc. Best fucking movie of the year!!! Planet Terror ruled, as did the first trailer the Machete Man or something like that. Freddy Rodriguez kicked ass. As for Death Proof It was kind of boring, that I took my cell out to play pool until it got more interesting.

Are we Done Yet?

Skip it, the funniest parts are on the trailer on TV.

Don't let this persuade you though folks. If you go in expecting a boring movie, you'll probably leave thinking it was a boring movie. All the dialogue in both parts of the film is almost all necessary if not all interesting. In the first half Quentin uses the extended intro to build the suspence for the incredibly awesome payoff in the middle of the film. Then the second time he uses the dialog and lengthy build-up to strengthen his characters so that you're literally cheering for them by the end of the film, as well as sets things up perfectly for the jaw-dropping car chase at the end. And if nothing else, Death Proof is a perfect Grindhouse film. If it had too much action it wouldn't have felt quite as authentic.
