The Retro Island tournament will be run in a manner similar to Desert Island. There are two groups, with four players in each group. Each player will have a match against every opponent in his/her group. Once these rounds are complete, the two players with the most points in each group moves on to the semifinals. If there is a tie in points, whoever wins the tiebreaker moves on (tiebreakers explained in detail further down).

For each match, the objective is to win more votes than your opponent. For every win, each player will receive three points. If there is a tie, each player gets two points. If a player loses a match but is within three votes of the winner, that player will earn a single point.

It's important to remember that every vote counts. Even if someone is way ahead in a match, you should still vote for the playlist you think is better. This is very important becaue the vote differential sometimes comes into play with tiebreakers.

Once all the preliminary rounds are completed, the top two from each group move on. However, if two players have the same amount of points, we use the following tiebreaker system:

-The player with the better overall record wins
-If overall records are the same, the player with the better vote differential wins
-If the vote differential is the same, a one match playoff will be done

The tournament is tentatively scheduled to begin sometime next week.

Happy listening!

Things had gotten a bit bloated in rock by the late 70’s and a shake-up was needed. The amount of great music which emerged from the punk movement is quite staggering. I tried to keep the list upbeat and mix it up with the different styles that made up this rich tapestry of sounds. Amongst it all here, you’re forced to suffer through the prophetic political rantings of Jello Biafra & the DK’s in an updated Reagan era California Uber Alles. The slightly heavier leanings continue with Midnight Oil & The Clash. Then it’s pretty much fun & games the rest of the way, iIncluding, a shameless stab at votes with one of my favorite U2 songs, a solo jaunt from Ultravox founder John Foxx, the original version of Pretty In Pink given the full Furs treatment as opposed to the re-recorded version for the movie soundtrack, and a Sparks song originally found only in the early Nicholas Cage comedy, Valley Girl. Overall, just a drop in a 10 year span of rejuvenated rock ‘n roll. So why vote for my list? Well, with tongue firmly in cheek, I am the oldest entrant, which means I have less time to win one of these and it shows respect for your elders. A fine trait. And it shows you can support one with an embarrassingly low purity test score. Also, a vote for me will most likely help slow global warming. A noble endeavor. Enjoy!

THE AGE OF THE RUBIX CUBE

I don't have a deep enough knowledge of these genres to put together a list of obscure tracks that nobody's heard of, so I've simply tried to cram as much well-known awesomeness into eighty minutes as I could. In short, it is highly doubtful that there's anything on my list that you haven't heard before, and I wouldn't be surprised if I have the most mainstream list in this contest. But it is, imo, the cream of the crop of the songs you've heard a million times. It starts off with a blast of punk before settling into new wave territory for the rest of the way.

1.Joan Jett - "Bad Reputation" - Bad Reputation(2:48) - 1981
2.The Ramones - "Blitzkrieg Bop" - Anthology(2:14) - 1999(Actual: 1976)
3.Violent Femmes - "Blister In The Sun" - Add It Up(2:24) - 1993(Actual: 1982)
4.The Clash - "Rock The Casbah" - The Essential Clash(3:43) - 2003(Actual: 1982)
5.Joe Jackson - "Is She Really Going Out With Him" - Look Sharp!(3:36) - 1979
6.Elvis Costello - "Allison" - My Aim Is True(3:21) - 1977
7.Blondie - "Call Me" - Greatest Hits(3:33) - 1980(Actual: 1979)
8.Duran Duran - "A View To Kill" - Decade(3:35) - 1989(Actual: 1985)
9.Soft Cell - "Tainted Love" - Non-Stop Erotic Cabaret(2:42) - 1981
10.Simple Minds - "Don't You Forget About Me" - Breakfast Club Soundtrack(4:21) - 1985
11.Madness - "Our House" - Total Madness(4:22) - 1986(Actual: 1982)
12.Thomas Dolby - "She Blinded Me With Science" - The Golden Age Of Wireless(5:10) - 1982
13.Talking Heads - "Once In A Lifetime" - Remain In Light(4:19) - 1980
14.Gary Numan - "Cars" - The Pleasure Principle(3:59) - 1979
15.Eurythmics - "Sweet Dreams(Are Made Of This)" - Sweet Dreams(Are Made Of This)(4:52) - 1983
16.A-ha - "Take On Me" - Hunting High And Low(3:50) - 1985
17.The Police - "Every Breath You Take" - Every Breath You Take: The Classics(4:13) - 1995(Actual: 1983)
18.The Cure - "Pictures Of You" - Disintegration(4:46) - 1989
19.Joy Division - "Love Will Tear Us Apart" - Substance(3:25) - 1988(Actual: 1980)
20.Depeche Mode - "Everything Counts" - Construction Time Again(4:22) - 1983
21.The Buggles - "Video Killed The Radio Star" - The Age Of Plastic(4:14) - 1979

A couple of notes:

1.I picked "A View To A Kill" over "Hungry Like The Wolf" or "Rio" for Duran Duran because the latter two are accepted classics, and I feel that 'A View To A Kill' is often underappreciated. On some days, depending on my mood, it's my favorite Duran Duran song. I remember when I was little, I would listen to this and Billy Joel's "Running On Ice" back-to-back...you know, 'Dance into the fire', 'Running on ice'...random memory.

2.I almost included Tears For Fears' 'Shout'...the chorus is fairly catchy, but upon re-listening to it, I realized that the chorus is all there is. It's 'shout shout let it all out these are things I can do without come on I'm talking to you come on' about a hundred times in a row. Not enough substance, imo, and not worth the price of cutting anything on my list to make room for it. I also almost included Nena's '99 Balloons', but it didn't make the cut. Also, although I included basically the most well-known song of the Ramones' career, I still think their later work - AKA Pet Semetary, Poison Heart, I Believe In Miracles, etc - is the best work of their career. Only the timeframe requirement kept any of these songs out over "Blitzkrieg Bop".

3."Just Can't Get Enough" and "People Are People" are a little more well-known, but I've always thought "Everything Counts" was superior to both. I initially had included the 'long version' found on the same album as the normal version, but I had to settle for the normal version due to time constraints. Both the vocal melodies as well as the instrumental melodies are catchy as hell.

4.I am rather proud of a couple of the transitions I've come up with, namely the drums at the end of 'She Blinded Me With Science' going into the beginning of 'Once In A Lifetime', Pictures Of You->Love Will Tear Us Apart, A View To A Kill->Tainted Love, and Is She Really Going Out With Him->Allison. I love the flow throughout, really.

5.I've included the year of release for each song. Some of these tracks appeared on 'best of' or 'greatest hits' compilations and appear as such in my ITunes library. For these tracks, I've included the year the compilation was released with the actual year the song was originally released in parenthesis.

*While it became very popular due to Rain Man in 1989, it was first a hit in the UK back in 1983 upon its initial release.
**There were three different versions of this song recorded. The best by far is the UK single version which can be found on the original Singles, 45's And Under disc.

Synthtastic!

Ok so the title of the play list is a joke between a friend and I, but it is no secret that I have a sick obsession with synthesizers, and the music created with such a “fantastic!” instrument. Anyways, I tried to make my list not TOO much of a greatest hits compilations, but with the little access I have to the music I love so very much, I had to make due with what I had. It was hard to cut this list down to under 80 minutes, and even now, with an extra 2.5 minutes left, I feel like I should throw something else in, but I think it’s safer leaving it like this. This is the most excited I think I’ve been about desert island since the very beginning, so I hope my list is the best I could have done, that it flows * well, and it’s enjoyable for all those listening .

Devolution:
A Punk Retrospective
1975 - 1980

I began composing this list by jotting down a few of my favourite songs and artists of the era, and before long I noticed a definite trend - pretty much all of my choices could be encompassed within the years 1975 to 1980. Those years define the genre for me. Within those years you could find the latter phases of proto-punk, the rise of punk in its purest form, and the birth and foundation of post-punk and new wave. What I've attempted to do is to build a list that includes some of the essential artists of this period. Depending on your familiarity with the era, you may know many of these, or just a few. In selecting songs, for the most part, I tried to avoid ones that have been played so often over the years that they're almost a part of our collective pop culture consciousness. Instead, I tried to include lesser known but amazing tracks that casual listeners of or newcomers to this genre might not know as well. I hope that this collection conveys to each of you the energy and excitement of this groundbreaking period in music.

Note: The date at the end of each track indicates the original year of release.

I think he's working on editing those posts with extensive lists... right?

That would make too much sense. I thought they'd be screengrabs from the DI website for some reason.

Ignore my first post, please.

Phanan's cover wins... and we both have "Pump It Up" and "Since You're Gone."

I think we have too small of a group for this, but I think it is something to consider for DI5.

That's cool, I was thinking we could try it out this time around to see how it would work out for DI5.

Loving all the artwork!

Great lists! Turns out I know more songs in this genre than I thought I knew!
