Retro Island Album Game: Round 1, Match 2

Please vote for the playlist you LIKE THE MOST.

Welcome to the second match of the first round of the Interference Retro Island Album Game! In this competition, instead of being stranded on a desert island and seeking the best playlist to enjoy while there, we're heading off to Retro Island to savour the best that the punk/new wave genre of the late 70's and 80's has to offer.

For every win, each player will receive three points. If there is a tie, each player gets two points. If a player loses a match but is within three votes of the winner, that player will earn a single point. Current standings will be displayed at the end of each round.

For the second heat, we have phanan going up against Screwtape2. Below are their playlists.

If you don't know the songs, or wish to hear how each playlist flows, feel free to check out the Desert Island website.

Both were good listens, but I think Phanan's list captures the era better than Screwy's list.

I agree with LMP about phanan's list capturing the era better than Screwy.

Phanan's list for sure. Cohesive, and I like many of the songs he chose, and it flows. I think he's hardy's stiffest competition.

I just don't really care for Screwy's list. He has a handful of songs on there I like, but that's about it. Sorry!

Screwy's list was great at first, but those last few tracks were so out of left field it sorta hurt it. Phanan's list only had one or two songs that I didn't really love, but it was overall a great listen:

I voted for Phanan.

Honestly, I regret entering. I tried to pull out but was convinced to submit something even if it pushed the limits. It clearly pushed the limits. I love the tracklist. I did stick to the well known/hits of the period and that was part of the problem. I really wish I hadn't entered as someone else could have done a better job on the Retro part. I'm going to be voting for my opponent through all my rounds.

Good luck and great job to everyone else!

He actually sings.

"Wrap those gifts
Give them all a twist
Ho Ho Ho
My elves are working hard all day
We must whip it!
To get them all out that day
We must whip it!
Santa's got to be on time
We must whip it!
Because it's Christmas
Christmas time
Ho Ho Ho
Wrap it!"

It's as good as anybody's until you hit the last 5 songs, then it just feels out-of-place. If you hadn't have used the Utopia, Kate Bush, or Peter Gabriel tracks, I think you wouldn't be hearing that complaint. Everyone's lists are pretty tight quality-wise, so little breaks like that mess you up, I think. You shouldn't be ashamed of your list.

That was my problem. I didn't have enough songs that fit the Retro bill like everyone else that worked for what I wanted. That is why I tried to back out. It isn't a bad playlist but it isn't exactly a retro playlist either, you know?

Okay. It is a "retro list" until you get to the end, but it's not like you were way off-base the whole time. Either way, you shouldn't be ashamed of what you submitted.

Screwtape, your list is not bad at all. We talked you into participating in something you admitted having reservations about. And looking at the set list, it is not much different than the rest. It reflects your view of the time period, and believe me, there was plenty of music being made in those years that was representative of your selections. Of course, getting votes is a different story, and it sucks geting slammed. Remember my prog list?

Anyways, you had a good start IMO. A good Bowie song, the Vapor's, the Enz Six Months and some obscure tracks from groups I like that I don't have which I will be keeping. I think your original thought of using DIY by Gabriel might have helped at the end, but all in all, it was a pretty gutsy effort going with the tracks you used.

I do prefer Phanan's list and his Maxell XLII 90 cassette, but you had the best cover. Now why isn't there a Devo song in your list?

I'll save my vote for tomorrow

I voted for phanan. I really like this list, and for me, there was a great mixture of well known and lesser known songs, things you don't commonly hear that often.

Screwtape, I think you did an admirable job with your list, but as others have mentioned, you went a little off track toward the end. Still, I'm glad you ended up staying in and submitting your list.

Screwtape gets a win just for that cover and title alone. Fantastic!
