regina spektor

The friendliest place on the web for anyone that follows U2.
If you have answers, please help by responding to the unanswered posts.
I've been hearing about her for a while, but haven't checked her out. Is she new? Sorry. Or does she already have a Best Of out? Can I have some suggestions on her music? Thanks :)

She's been making music for a few years, I think she has 4 main albums but only her two most recent have been on a label (I think). Her latest album called "Begin to Hope" is probably the best place to start or at least the easiest to get into, although I know some of her fans think her older stuff is better. I'd reccomend it though. If you post your email address I'll send you a sample.

ha, any time.

just out of curiousity, did you only look into her after coming about this thread?

I did.

After a listen, I bought her newest release. I love her lyrics.

that time
Hey remember the time when I found a human tooth down on Delancey
Hey remember that time we decided to kiss anywhere except the mouth
Hey remember that time when my favorite colors were pink and green
Hey remember that month when I only ate boxes of tangerines
So cheap and juicy, tangerines

Hey remember that time when I would only read Shakespeare
Hey remember that other time when I would only read the backs of cereal boxes
Hey remember that time I tried to save a pigeon with a broken wing
A street cat got him by morning and I had to bury pieces of his body in my building's playground
I thought I was going to be sick, I thought I was going to be sick

Hey remember that time when I would only smoke Parliaments
Hey remember that time when I would only smoke Marlboros
Hey remember that time when I would only smoke Camels
Hey remember that time when I was broke
I didn't care I just bummed from my friends
Bum, bum, bum, bum, bum...

Hey remember that time when you od'ed
Hey remember that other time when you od'ed for the second time
Well in the waiting room while waiting for news of you I hallucinated I could read your mind
And I was on a lot of shit too but what I saw, man, I tell you it was freaky, freaky

consequence of sounds

My rhyme ain't good just yet,
My brain and tongue just met,
And they ain't friends, so far,
My words don’t travel far,
They tangle in my hair,
And tend to go nowhere,
They grow right back inside,
Right past my brain and eyes
Into my stomach juice
Where they don’t serve my juice,
No healthy calories,
Nutrition values.
And I absorb back in
The words right through my skin
They sit there festering inside my bowels

The consonants and vowels
The consequence of sounds
The consonants and vowels
The consequence of sounds

Got a soundtrack in my mind,
All the time. Kids-
Screamin' from too much beat up
And they don't even rhyme,
They just stand there, on a street corner,
Skin tucked in
And meat side out and shot,
And I’d like to turn them down
But there ain't no knob.
We're into picket fences
Not into picket lines.
All this hippie-shit for the 60's
And another cliché in our time. But,
What if one of these days your heart
Will just stop ticking,
And they sorta just don't find you till your cubicle is reeking.

The consonants and vowels
The consequence of sounds
The consonants and vowels
The consequence of sounds
Ahh ah ah ah ahh ah ah ah

Did you know that the gravedigger's still
Gettin' stuck in the machine
Even though it's a whole other daydream.
It's another town it's another world,
Where the kids are asleep, where the loans are paid
And the lawns are mowed.
Whad'ya think?
All the gravediggers were gone?
Just cause one song is done
There’s always another one,
Waiting right around the bend,
Till this one ends,
Then it begins
Squeaky clean, then it starts all over again.

The weather report keeps on
Tossing and turning,
Predicting and warning,
And warning and warning of,
Possible leakage for news publications and,
Possible leakage for news TV stations. That
Very same morning right next to her coffee
She noticed some bleeding and heard hollow coughing and
the National Geographic was being too graphic,
When all she had wanted to know was the traffic
“The worlds got a nosebleed” it said
“And we’re flooding but we keep on cutting
The trees in the forests!”
And we keep on paying those freaks on the TV,
Who claim they will save us but want to enslave us.
And sweating like demons they scream through our speakers
But we leave the sound on 'cause silence is harder.
And no one’s the killer and no one’s the martyr
The world that has made us can no longer contain us
And profits are silent then rotting away 'cause

The consonants and vowels
The consequence of sounds.

Ah ah ah…

From the few songs I've heard and her latest single with all the paint pigment being thrown about, she strikes me as a member of the cult of female singer/songwriters similar to Fiona Apple.

[Spektor resembles the] The kind of artists who are cutesy, slightly pretentious, write semi-memorable slinky piano songs, and whose only ability to create hooks is to use an off-tempo vocal rhythm in the chorus.

She should get together with the guy singing that "I...can't...let, go, oh I...can't...let, go" song on VH1 and fuck off.

:madwife:

based on that video i could see how you might think she's the new Norah Jones- (brief breathe of fresh air that you quickly can't stand listening to) but she does have a massive catalog. Maybe you should listen to more of it, or maybe you just don't like the style of music. Doesn't mean it's not good.

I love women with pianos

I remember I shit all over her previously on this forum, but having digested her latest album, I have to say I  Regina.

Brilliant quirky vocalist. Love it. Hotel Song is amazing

I'm sorry.

I've discovered Regina Spektor just recently with "Begin to Hope" and I really like her. Great quirky lyrics, eccentric vocals. What's not to love? I'll probably get her older stuff through amazon.com though since I can't seem to find any of her back catalogue here in Melbourne.

Also, I had not clue that she's Russian-born and had quite a shock when I first listened to "Apres Moi". That song makes the language switch in my head go haywire a little bit, :)

"Begin to hope" is great. I  Fidelity. She reminds me of Nerina Pallot.

Hadn't heard of her until I saw this thread . Thanks, zoomerang.

For those that like her and the Strokes, they recorded a GREAT B-side to Reptillia, called Modern Girls and Old Fashioned Men. Check it out, it's great (I can send it tonight for those that are interested, just leave your email).
