recommend more rockin' female singer-songwriters?

Hi everyone at interference, lurker the forayer here, once again to suck information out of you, nothing else, you're not friends, just vending machines.

I just discovered Ani DiFranco

My introduction to her is her live double-disc, "so much shouting so much laughter".

Can anyone recommend more stuff like her? I like strong personalities (not Dido types) who sing about topics dear to women, in an intelligent manner -- not in a male-bashing, or whiny way. I also like astounding skills on the piano or guitar. I tire pop tunes easily, so please don't recommend Shawn Colvin, even though her guitar picking rocks...

I'm already heavily into Tori Amos, as you guys know, and don't really fancy PJ Harvey.

i don't listen to music from female songwriters as i do straightforward rocknroll bands. i don't know why tho...

But the few i do listen to and like are:
beth orton "central reservation"
natalie merchant "tigerlily"
aimee mann's music from the motion picture magnoli

there might be more in my collection... but these come to mind immediately.

Yes, Aimee Mann's started to intrigue me as well. I already have Natalie Merchant's Motherland which is a bit boring actually... Thanks!

merchant's debut "tigerlily" is really really good... tight songwriting and catchy songs.

Do you like Kathleen Hanna (formerly of Bikini Kill)? Or rather, do you know of Le Tigre?? I LOVE them. Also, Sleater-Kinney are pretty fucking great!!

Pretty Girls Make Graves
The Start

Both of these bands have female singers, I quite like them both.

Lucinda Williams is incredible, one of the best poet/lyricists around. A strong, very intelligent woman with a soulful voice, one of those voices that tells you she's been around the block a few times and not putting up with any b/s from anybody.

And did you ever get PJ Harvey's "Is This Desire?" I know we talked about it once. If you haven't heard that one, I'd give her another chance. It's her best record, in my opinion, and I think she will continue to surprise us in the best possible way.

And you're already into Bjork, right?

Thanks, everyone; lots of names that I'm not familiar with.

joyfulgirl, yup I'm into Bjork, and I like Is This Desire. I'll check out Lucinda Williams, the only song I've heard from her is Lafayette which was so-so...
