Random Music Talk XLVIII: Like Tennessee Williams, we wait for The CLICK!

The friendliest place on the web for anyone that follows U2.

I believe they're doing a few shows in which they perform all of their singles from the beginning to now which is pretty neat.

Personally, I didn't mind Postcards, but it doesn't have a particular 'oh let's listen again' feeling like The Holy Bible or Everything Must Go.

Sheesh, that singles collection is 38 tracks long, but only $9.99 on iTunes / Amazon MP3 store. If you have any faint interest in their music, but not much familiarity, that's an incredibly easy recommendation.

And you get to hear the progression of the band's sound as it's in order. In addition, Nicky released a book of polaroids with many different shots from their career which I'm thinking may be a good idea to get sometime in the future.

Interestingly, there is nothing off of "Journal For Plague Lovers", one of my favorite albums of 2009.

Also, how has this band never even placed on the charts in the US?

Thanks for the haikus. I had a good laugh at Gaf's and imp's.

The past six days at a youth leadership/personal development camp has been the best week of my life. No TV, no phones, no internet, no booze, and none of us knew each other at the start of the week. I've made some incredible friends, met some amazing, inspirational people, and feel more sure of myself than ever. If you ever get the chance to go on one of these things then please, please do it. It was so hard leaving today, very emotional. I'm so fucking happy, but also pretty depressed at the same time. Incredible.

Destroyer continue to blow my mind. To The Heart of the Sun... is brilliant.

Looks like THE FORK! doesn't share the Childish Gambino enthusiasm so prevalent around here.

That's a really, really low score.

Childish Gambino: Camp | Album Reviews | Pitchfork

I got through about three lines. What a fucking piece of shit. I get really fucking annoyed by supposedly credible sites like Pitchfork editoralising to a degree like that.

Destroyer continue to blow my mind.

When will you move on to giving the New Pornographers the time they deserve? I like many of the tracks he's done with them as much, if not more, than the majority of his own "solo" stuff. Look out upon the Myriad Harbour, Cobbler.

When I get off my Destroyer kick, which won't be any time soon with four new albums to absorb.

I listened to Together and didn't like it as much as many here did.

yes. i wish there was a rap-less version, but usually songs like that when they remove the rap just turn it into an instrumental break which ends up sounding so obvious. the only example i can think of off-hand is no doubt's underneath it all. but yeah. that rap just adds nothing to the song.

No you don't. Neutering a song like that is one of the worst things. We have several pop stations that never at any time play rap music. But still they play songs like "Just Dance", "California Gurls", "Let it Rock", etc. They just cut that unsightly rap stuff out. It's horrible. Let the song be the way it's supposed to be or don't play it at all.

Thanks for the MSPs advice, mofo. I'll give something of theirs a spin in a few and let the thread at large know how it went.

Classic Cobbler.

You should have heard and obsessed over Twin Cinema years ago. Catchiest record ever, and it's got a handful of Bejar classics.

I enjoyed Everything Must Go pretty well. Far more than The Holy Bible hard to believe those were back to back releases. Favorite track was "Interiors".

In other news 50 Words for Snow is hot stuff, though the title track is just silly.

Listening to Looping State of Mind now.

How many times have you listened to THB? I still maintain it's a record that needs to be listened to at least 3 times, the definition of a grower for me.

i need to go listen to motorcycle emptiness now. and...um...that other song that i forgot the name of that i really liked. it's been about since yertle was a regular around here since i've listened to that band. i still have the mix he made for me around here somewhere.

and motown junk, of course.

i miss yertle. and i like cereal.

Obligatory angry face.

I actually make those mistakes a lot more often than it would seem. I usually catch them, though. It happens with "one" and "won" a lot.

Should we blame Shuttlecock?

I have that Manic Street Preachers hits collection; it's good stuff. I first heard A Design For Life and became obsessed with that song, and picked up the disc after that.

it is always shuttlecock's fault.

Theyre both pretty indicitive of the album's sound. The first track maybe a bit more. Id say if anyone were to ever ask me what Indie Pop sounds like I'd point them in this album's direction. I used to not care a great deal for it, but I'm listening to and loving the hell out of it right now.

Martha, the crazy thing is those aren't even the most popular songs from that album. If you like those two, it's a safe bet you'll like the album. Definitely one of my favs of the last 10 years.

Not sure how much you know about the band's history, but the majority of the Holy Bible was written by band member Richey Edwards. He disappeared 6 or 7 months after the album released, and is still missing. He was presumed to have committed suicide as they found his car parked near a bridge popular for that, but no one knows as a body has never been found. Richey being gone resulted in a fairly visible change in the sound / direction of the band, as they didn't want to go on "business as usual" without him.

Also, ive heard THB twice all the way through, but ive started it on at least 5 different occasions. I just find it completely underwhelming. Nothing from the album, even while listening to it sticks with me, and i dont really see myself bothering with it again any time soon.

Their debut Mass Romantic actually rocks quite a bit harder while remaining good, which might be a better starting point for you. I think they just kept getting better, but a lot of people think Mass Romantic is excellent.
