Random Music Talk XCVIII: When the Music's Over...

The friendliest place on the web for anyone that follows U2.
If you have answers, please help by responding to the unanswered posts.
what's the guy with the tie and silly hat at approx 00:58? a referee or something? i have no idea what's happening in that video, either.

It's not alright, it's not even close to alright.

fuck. If I liked even half okkervil river's catalog as much as this song and our life is not a movie or maybe, they'd be top five favorite band material.

Anything new on the U2 front?

(Legitimate question. I could go skim the new album thread for a minute but don't feel like doing that tonight.)

There was this tweet last week, but other than that, not much:
Brat @Gpaul1972 · Jun 5 U2 emptied HQ today - guitars, drums etc... all tagged with U2 London June 14 so I'm guessing it's studio time next week in London

Yeah, that's the only actual thing of substance that's been out recently. They seem to have been vacationing and then are hitting the studio again in London next week.

I love Graceland more every time I hear it. The first time, it almost felt like I'd been told so often that I would love the album, that I was forcing it to happen. Subsequent listens, however, have proved that not to be the case, culminating in today's listen, in which I realize that I love every moment of it.

Since I don't have anything to be happy about where my own team is concerned and the playoffs, I will easily say that this is one of my favorite moments in baseball. Hell, all of sports.

I was a Blue Jays can since visiting Toronto in 1983, so this was a nice payoff for me. Their first title was against the Braves, who I hated, and for the second they beat the mullet-sporting slobs that were the 1993 Phillies.

Good times.

Random U2 question: is the only available version of their Happiness Is A Warm Gun cover the "Gun mix" on the Last Night On Earth single? As in, is there an un-remixed version?

I believe the song was used for a short-lived TV show or miniseries called Gun but not sure if that was the same version.

I think there are two different LNOE singles with two different mixes, but not a straight up studio version.

For years, I somehow missed that Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground was one of the sweetest love songs of the decade. All of the sugar is balanced by the fuzzy guitar tone I guess. So basically it's a perfect song.

Umpire, yes.

3 and a half minutes of nothing then a nice play by the catcher (or do you call him the catcho?)

The three-and-a-half minutes of "nothing" is Glenn McGrath, fast bowler extraordinaire, setting up the wicket. McGrath bowled five balls that were just wide enough for the batsman to leave alone, and then on the sixth ball brought it in just a tiny bit, enough to force the batsman to play, and Hussain got a thin edge on the ball, and wicketkeeper Adam Gilchrist caught it.

This album cover is pretty sweet:
