...and after this many years it's getting a little old...

You can argue that it is becoming increasingly apt as the far right becomes increasingly obstreperous. It would be tiresome if his persona was not such a pitch-perfect satire of conservative values.

And this coming from the one who still makes cock jokes.

He and Jon Stewart's shows / jokes have been crazily stale and predictable for years and years. Armchair liberals are easily amused I guess.

armchair anything is someone who espouses the textbook (and currently most mainstream version) ideology of their chosen political view, but rarely gets up off the couch and actually does anything about it. kind of like college kids, who are probably colbert's biggest fans anyway.

I don't want to turn this into an FYM discussion, but that distinction between action and inaction in political terms is extremely nebulous. I think that almost any service, however well-trodden, that helps people scrutinize Republican policies and ideologies is a positive thing.

If it's any consolation, I think both the Republicans and Democrats are dinosaur parties backed mostly by sheep who are unable / unwilling to think for themselves, and have no idea as to what real liberal or conservative policies are. The idea that Obama is a socialist is just as ridiculous as the idea that Bush was a conservative. No progressive liberal policies will ever come from the Democrats, and no true conservative policies will ever come from the Republicans. The sooner people abandon these dinosaur twin policy corporate shell parties, the better.

it's the unwilling/unable to think for themselves part that i've always taken to be the biggest characteristic of "armchair" either side. it exists on both sides, and as much as i don't really care for radiohead or lengthy laz 'n friends joke threads, i'm still in here while i'm bored and caught up with the threads here that i do actually read, rather than FYM because both sides are pretty fucking silly (never mind the fact that there are only 2 sides, or how closely the mainstream versions of "liberal" and "conservative" really resemble each other in current american politics. it's all a giant pile of bullshit, and there is nothing i can think/say/do that is going to change this). and in the end, i still just have a lot of hatred for college kids.

Okay, this makes perfect sense. I would argue that within the sphere of world politics, the US has plenty of genuinely (whatever that means) conservative policies but no real liberal politicians. Obama would be centrist or even right-leaning in most European countries. But I see and appreciate your point.

Indeed. Although with a different aura than most american Presidents, in terms of policies applied, here in Europe, Obama's and Democrat's policies would be seen as right wing (Republican's would be seens as extreme-right in certain countries). If I had to put usual Democrat's policies in a European political family of the UE, I'd place it in the European Popular Party or maybe in the Alliance of European Conservatives probably...

But don't worry, in Europe, most "Socialist parties" are not socialist at all, most "Social-democrat parties" have no idea of what social-democracy is, and so on...

How about I just run for President, and then everything will be all good and you guys can all stop your bitching?

But will you know right from wrong?

I don't know my right from left
or my right from wrong
They say I'm a fool, they say I'm nothing, ewwwughh
But if I'm a fool for you...
oh, that's something!

BEAT ON BLACK, BEAT ON WHITE
BEAT ON ANYTHING, DON'T GET IT RIGHT!!!
BEAT ON YOU, BEAT ON ME, BEAT ON LOVE!!!!!!!!!

:heart::heart: = :heart:

I fully agree. Obama has turned out to be quite conservative.

We need a revolution.

But what I like about John Stewart is he shows the absurdity of it all on both sides.

Colbert's shtick has gotten old and I usually fast-forward through much of it, if I watch it at all, but I agree with iyup that he's still pitch-perfect.

I've been telling people for years that I'm not a big Obama fan because I think he's too far to the right. Usually people say, "You mean left." No, I don't.

He's way too far right for me. My vote was half-hearted to begin with although I didn't expect to be this disappointed.

And my axe. (re: Peef and JG)

When John Edwards was last campaigning, he was practically advocating class war, which would be fine with me.

Too bad he looked like a huckster because I really think he was a legit progressive liberal.

Had Edwards won with a progressive platform, though, the mechanics of the system would still have been forced him into centrism; otherwise, he would be looking at huge Republican gains in the midterms and probably ouster in the presidential election. The Republicans have long been more effective at vilifying opponents through propaganda than have the Democrats.

That shit Obama said the other day about "Take off your bedroom slippers and put on your marching boots!" was HILARIOUS. And bizarrely awesome.
