I think there's plenty of warmth in Kid A. Not necessarily in the lyrics, but I don't really care about lyrics anyway. There's a great sense of contentment in the music, and confidence in their art, which makes me personally a very happy listener.

Has anyone considered the drastic move of dropping one of the earlier versions of Videotape into the playlist instead of the album version?

That this has been released digitally makes it more malleable, the way I look at it?

At this point I'd be interested in hearing a couple different versions (I know there's some difference of opinion as to which was better) and "trying them out" so to speak.

Hate to do it, but that's what happens when you debut stuff so heavily before recording, right?

The Basement Tapes version of Videotape blows the album version out of the water.

I've been looking for lyrics...I found lyrics to most of the record. In fact, other then Reckoner, which I gather is the one song that is totally brand new to everyone, all that's missing is tidbits here and there. I thought I'd do you guys a favor and put everything I've found in one place...namely, here:

15 Step

How come I end up where I started
How come I end up where I went wrong
Won't take my eyes off the ball again
You reel me out and you cut the string

How come I end up where I started
How come I end up where I went wrong
Won't take my eyes off the ball again
You reel me out then you cut the string

You used to be alright
What happened?
Did the cat get your tongue
Did your string come undone
One by one
One by one
It comes to us all
It's as soft as your pillow

You used to be alright
What happened
Etcetera Etcetera
Facts for whatever
Fifteen steps
Then a sheer drop

How come I end up where I started
How can I end up where I belong
Won't take my eyes off the ball again
You reel me out and you cut the string.

Bodysnatchers

I do not
Understand
What it is
I've done wrong

Full of holes
Check for pulse
Blink your eyes
One for yes
Two for no

I have no idea what I am talking about
I am trapped in this body and can't get out

I'm alive

Make a sound
Move back home
Get an invitation
With the edges
Sawn off

I have no idea what I am talking about
I am trapped in this body and can't get out

Has the light gone out for you?
Cause the light's gone out for me
And you can draw it out of me
It is the twenty-first century
They found me at the top
And they brought me to my knees
They got scared and they put me in
They got scared and they put me in
All their eyes wrapped around my face
All their eyes around my face
I didn't want anybody else to see
I didn't want anybody else to see

I'm alive

I've seen it coming

Nude

Don't get any big ideas
They're not gonna happen
You paint your house white and feel the noise
But there'll be something missing

And now that you found it, it's gone
Now that you feel it, you don't
I'm not afraid

She stands stark naked and she beckons you to bed
Don't go you'll only want to come back again

So don't get any big ideas
They're not gonna happen
You'll go to hell for what your dirty mind is thinking

And now that you found it, it's gone
And now that you feel it, you don't
I'm not afraid

Weird Fishes/Arpeggi

In the deepest ocean
Bottom of the sea
Your eyes
They turn me
Why should i stay here?
Why should i stay?
I'd be crazy not to follow

Your eyes
They turn me
Turn me on to phantoms
I follow to the edge of the earth
And fall off
Everybody leaves
If they get the chance
And this is my chance
I get eaten by the worms
We're fishes
Get towed by the worms
Weird fishes
Weird fishes
Weird fishes
I'll hit the bottom
Hit the bottom and escape

I'll hit the bottom
Hit the bottom to escape
Escape

All I Need

I'm the next act
Waiting in the wings
I'm an animal
Trapped in your ???
I am all the days
That you choose to ignore

You are all I need
You are all I need
I'm in the middle of a picture
Lying in the leaves

I'm a cloud of moths
Who just wants to share your light
I'm an insect
Who wants to get out of the night

I only stick with you
Because there are no others

You are all I need
You are all I need
I'm in the middle of a picture
Lying in the leaves

It's all wrong
It's all right
It's all wrong

Faust Arp

One two three four

Wakey wakey
rise and shine
it's on again, off again, on again
watch me fall
like dominos
in pretty patterns
Fingers in the blackbird pie
im tingling, tingling, tingling
it's what you feel now
what you ought to, what you ought to
reasonable and sensible
dead from the neck up
because im stuck, stuck, stuck
we thought you had it in [you]
but no, no, no
for no real reason

Squeeze the tubes and empty bottles
take a bow, take a bow, take a bow
it's what you feel now
what you ought to
what you ought to
an elephant thats in the room is
tumbling, tumbling, tumbling,
in duplicate and duplicate
plastic bags and
duplicate and triplicate
dead from the neck up
I guess I'm stuck, stuck, stuck
we thought you had it in you
but no, no, no
exactly where do you get off
Is enough, is enough, is enough
I love you but enough is enough, enough
a last stop
There's no real reason

you've got a head full of feathers
you got melted to butter

Reckoner

?

House Of Cards

I don't wanna be your friend
I just wanna be your lover
No matter how it ends
No matter how it starts
Care about your house of cards
And I'll deal mine
Care about your house of cards
And I'll deal mine
And fall off the table
I guess we're homeless
Denial, denial
[INSERT MISSING LYRICS HERE]
Denial, denial
Your ears are burning
Denial, denial
Your ears should be burning
Denial, denial

Jigsaw Falling Into Place

Just as you take my hand
Just as you write my number down
Just as the drinks arrive
Just as they play your favourite song
As the magic disappears
No longer wound up like a spring
Before you've had too much
Come back and focus again

The walls abandon shape
You've got a cheshire cat grin
All blurring into one
This place is on a mission
Before the night owl
Before the animal noises
Closed circuit cameras
Before you're comatose

Before you run away from me
Before you're lost between the noise
The beat goes round and round
The beat goes round and round
I never really got there
I just pretended that I had
What's the point of instruments
Words are a sawed off shotgun

Come on and let it out
Come on and let it out
Come on and let it out
Come on and let it out

Before you run away from me
Before you start unravelling
Before you take my mic
Just as you dance, dance, dance

Jigsaws falling into place
There is nothing to explain
Regard each other as you pass
She looks back, you look back
Not just once
Not just twice
Wish away the nightmare
Wish away the nightmare
You've got a light you can feel it on your back
You've got a light you can feel it on your back
Jigsaws falling into place

Videotape

When I'm at the pearly gates
This'll be on my videotape
My videotape

When Mephistopheles is just beneath
And he's reaching up to grab me

This is one for the good days
And I have it all here
In red blue green
In red blue green

You are my centre when I spin away
Out of control on videotape
On videotape

This is my way of saying goodbye
Because I can't do it face to face
I'm talking to you

No matter what happens now
I won't be afraid
Because I know today has been the most perfect day I've ever seen.

which songs exactly come across as warm to you? it's an absolutely beautiful record, but in an aching sort of way. even if you don't pay attention to the lyrics, warmth is the last thing I get from Kid A...I mean I guess Optimistic is kind of upbeat...The National Anthem maybe...that's about it. It creates its own fucked up universe and I love it.

I don't think "contentment" is what Kid A delivers at all. Not that I don't think the band was content with that sound - I'm sure it was the music they wanted to make. The album does start with Everything in its Right Place, but everything after that seems to be a journey away from the right place, perhaps trying to reach it again. I dunno, music evokes different feelings for different people. Kid A is a comfort to me when I'm fucked up because its like the cloudiness in my head put to music. In Rainbows is comforting in a different way; it's actually uplifting in some parts, and has a generally more laid-back feel. Less frantic paranoia.

LMP you bring up some good points...Life in a Glasshouse is a song I can barely listen to though. Thom Yorke does not have the voice for that sort of song. But I certainly agree with Morning Bell/Amnesiac and perhaps Pyramid Song and I Might Be Wrong...hints of it, perhaps. But they fully reached it here. I really feel like this is a huge leap for them, because an easy criticism of Radiohead is that their music is too dark/depressing. In Rainbows isn't all sunshine, but you gotta have the light and the rain to make a rainbow right?

Well, you feel completely the opposite towards Kid A as I do. Fascinating. That album is full of lingering moments of tension, always followed by a significant release. Isn't that the definition of contentment in a way? Release and relief? The keys and chords used throughout the album support that as well. Sure it's not all Major and upbeat poppy happy time, but there can be warmth in mellow minor keys and dissonance, can there not? I think you're pigeonholing of the album is severely limiting it's strengths, and drawing that parallel between "upbeat" and "warm" made me cringe.

Just a simple question? Why so contentious?

Don't get me wrong, I love Kid A. I don't consider its lack of warmth to me as a weakness at all. For me the strength of the album is the fact that it creates a mood which lasts throughout. Perhaps my analysis is based so much on my own listening experience...the first time I listened to it I was a bit fucked up and I think identifying with it at that time led me to always associate it with that and therefore turn to the album whenever I felt that way. So I admit I'm biased. But so is anyone. That's the wonderful thing about music.

The release and relief theory is interesting...I've never really thought of Kid A like that. There is certainly tension in the album but not a lot of release in my opinion. To me it's more like searching for something you can never really find...then at the end one gives up the search, and there is sort of a release in that, the relief of giving in. I don't know if that makes any sense at all if you actually take into account the lyrics, but it's just the feeling I get from the album.
