R.e.m

The friendliest place on the web for anyone that follows U2.
If you have answers, please help by responding to the unanswered posts.
I grew up w/ them. Then kinda lost interest in them. Then went nuts getting back into them last year. They do make good records, and boy, like U2, they change all the time. Everytime I hear "World Leader Pretend" or "Don't Go Back To Rockville" I'm transported to freshman year of college, drinking Genny Creme Ale on the Hudson River! Good Times!

I love REM, "Reckoning" is one of my all-time favorite albums, but IMO they haven't put out anything of quality since "Automatic For The People." Well, maybe with the exception of "I've Been High" but honestly they need to get their shit together. I'll prolly get flamed for writing this, but it's just anopnion. I still think they are the shit.

I saw them live in Utrecht in June. In a club with only 800 people or so! :hyper:

Marty  (still needs to find a recording of that show)

My second favorite band of all time. Murmer is a MUST. As is Life's Rich Pageant. Those and Automatic are probably my top 3.

Just remember in my early college days when I was living in Texas and listening to Half a World Away, Texarkana, and Country Feedback from Out of Time - as I stared up at the big clear Texas sky. Wow, Out of Time is so good too. Just a couple of songs I would pitch off of it and the rest is incredible.

Michael Stipe has always been one of, if not my very favorite lyricist. Incredibley poetic.

HALF A WORLD AWAY

This could be the saddest dusk
I've ever seen
Turn to the miracle
I alive
My mind is racing
As it always will
My hand is tired my heart aches
>From half a world away
Hear my head swarm
To go it alone
And hold it alone
Haul it alone
And hold it
Go it alone
Hold it alone

Oh lonely deeps and hollows
Half a world
Half the world away
My shoes are gone
And life spent
I had too much to drink
I didn't think
I didn't think of you
I guess that's all I needed
To go it alone
And hold it alone
Haul it alone
And hold it
Blackbirds backwards forwards and fall

Oh this lonely world is wasted
Pathetic eyes high life
The blinded tide is turned to sea
The storm it came up strong
And it shook the trees
And blew away our fear
I couldn't need to hear

To go it alone
And hold it alone
Haul it alone
And hold it
To go it alone
And hold it alone
Haul it along
To go it alone
And hold it alone
Haul it along
And hold it
Blackbirds backwards forwards and fall

This could be the saddest dusk
I've ever seen
Turn to the miracle
I alive
My mind is racing
As it always will
My hand is tired my heart aches
>From half a world away

TEXARKANA

20,000 miles to an oasis
20,000 years will I burn
20,000 chances are wasted
Waiting for the road to turn

I would give my life to find it
I would give it all
Catch me if I fall

Walking through the woods I have faced it
Looking for something to earn
30,000 thoughts have been wasted
Never in my time to return

I would give my life to find it
I would give it all
Catch me if I fall
All alone
Waiting to fall

40,000 stars in the evening
Look at them fall from the sky
40,000 reasons for living
40,000 tears in your eye

I would give my life to find it
I would give it all
Catch me if I fall

COUNTRY FEEDBACK

This flower is scorched
This film is on
On a maddening look
These clothes
These clothes don't fit us right
I'm to blame
It's all the same
It's all the same

You come to me with a bone in your hand
You come to me with your hair curled tight
You come to me with positions
You come to me with excuses
Ducked out in a row
You wear me out
You wear me out

We've been through faith breakdown
Self hurt
Plastics collections
Self help self pain yes
Psychics fuck off
I was central
I had control
I lost my head
I need this
I need this
A paper weight junk garage
Winter rain a honey pot
Crazy, all the lovers have been tagged
Hotline wanted ad
Crazy what you could have had
It's crazy what you could have had
It's crazy what you could have had
I need this
I need this

They've got a whole bunch of classic songs to their name, that's for sure, and Michael Stipe is a great frontman. Unfortunately, their music, fine and elegant as it is, just doesn't have enough "oomph" factor to hold my interest over an album-long period of time.

Great band. They've been recording their new album in Vancouver over the past year, and open the N. American leg of the tour in Vancouver on Friday night (the night before Radiohead plays). Interesting tid bit: a buddy of mine has a producer friend in Vancouver whose wife has been Michael Stipe's physical therapist during the recording of the album. Now she's going along with them on tour. Michael Stipe was just in Dublin, and introduced her to Bono, and Bono hired her, too! She called from a party at Bono's house, and said it was like being at The White House with all the security. I love these 6 degrees of separation stories...

Anyway, here's a cool article on REM (how they write songs and how the album is coming along), and their opening show in Vancouver:

Welcome To The Occupation!

Yep, Document is a great album. :)

Marty

The Lifting is a great tune. Also, Walk Unafraid is supposedly inspired by Bono.

I think that Leave is also one of their best tunes.

Like U2 I grew up with REM! Dad has great taste in music!

Automatic For The People is probably one of my all time favourite albums! Stipe is great love REM! Wish I could have seen them at Glastonbury this year, looked amazing on TV!
