As a spin-off from the Sugababes thread, Zoomerang gave me his blessing to take his idea for a pop thread and run with it.

"Pop" has a lot of different interpretations, and I don't want to limit what we're talking about here - but myself, I'm talking about what I like to call "Big Dumb Pop Songs."

Post your favorite songs and/or videos in this thread!

While I like some pop that comes out of the US, I've been discovering a lot of real quality stuff out of the UK. Which is great, but dang, paying import prices, even for used CDs, is killing me. :(

Here are a few of my favorites to kick it off:

Sugababes: Freak Like Me
*a mash-up of Adina Howard's R&B hit "Freak Like Me" and Gary Newman's "Are Friends Electric." It's AWESOME.

Robyn: Konichiwa Bitches

*so apparently she had a hit in Europe some years ago called "Show Me Love." This confused me for so long, because there was a Robyn S. who had a dance hit in the US called "Show Me Love." I knew it wasn't the same singer, but it really bugged me until I realized the two songs and singers were completely different.

Who's That Girl

Annie: Heartbeat

Rachel Stevens: Sweet Dreams My LA Ex

I Said Never Again, But Here We Are

Girls Aloud: Wake Me Up

(I love these guys. Er, girls.)

No Good Advice

Jamelia: Superstar

Beware of the Dog

(love that Depeche Mode sample!)

PS: Is YouTube the best thing ever, or what?

That That
you can pick between Patience and Rule the world
both work for me

and can't go wrong with quite a bit of Kylie
(though her latest single is not all that good)

Edit: I was working on this post when you were mentioning Kylie. Great pop minds think alike! I haven't heard much from Take That, but Back For Good is a great song.

Ha! I knew Zoot would pop in with something from the 90s.

I can't forget I forgot one of my favorites: KYLIE!

Love At First Sight:

I Believe In You:

Red Blooded Woman:

2 Hearts ( I can't wait for this album to come out!):

Your Disco Needs You (this song cracks me up - I love it!):

I'd never heard that Thicke song until Blake Lewis did it on American Idol last year - I immediately got it from iTunes. I love it!!

Emma Bunton (aka Baby Spice): Maybe

http://youtube.com/watch?v=_eGoX8lHlgU

Charlotte Church: Crazy Chick

(remember her? I'm glad she ditched the opera thing and went pop. I dislike kids singing opera.)

http://youtube.com/watch?v=RXTACtBSY1U

Margaret Berger: Samantha

http://youtube.com/watch?v=LKQ9PycgGw0

I also love Robot Song, but can't find anything on YouTube for it.

Sophie Ellis-Bextor: Catch You

Annie - 'Chewing Gum' - Edit: Damn you, Slickies
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PuO_bb80mXw

Goldfrapp - 'Ooh La La'
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zS1ZAaVEodA

Bat For Lashes - 'What's a Girl To Do'
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n1wnOUH2jk8

Thicke - 'When I Get You Alone' (Dear Alan Thicke, your real son is cooler than Kirk Cameron)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KrlkSgccr8k

Bell Biv Devoe - 'Poison'
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N6blgjF6UkU

i'm listening to that bat for lashes song right now!... what are the odds!

Why must you turn this thread in to a house of lies?!

Donna Lewis' I LOVE YOU ALWAYS FORVER has always enchanted me. Musically it's very U2, with Killen's input.

Spice Girls Say You'll Be There, 2 Become 1, Stop, Wannabe

Kylie is the greatest though: Put Yourself In My Place wasn't mentioned, and that's a cracker too, as is Some Kind Of Bliss

I've never heard Put Yourself In My Place - I'll have to find that one!

JoJo: Too Little Too Late

http://youtube.com/watch?v=rvXZvj9UObI

Pink: Trouble

(I think her Try This album was woefully overlooked. This album and her latest are chock full of quality pop tunes.)

http://youtube.com/watch?v=X-tbJOFcQw8

The Veronicas: 4Ever

http://youtube.com/watch?v=IgJmag6h77I

And finally (at least for now :reject: ), two little oddball choices:

Kelly Clarkson is one of my current favorites, and I think this was the point on American Idol where everyone sat up and said, "Huh. This girl's going to win."

http://youtube.com/watch?v=0ccvE0M4MCo

From the Josie and the Pussycats movie: Three Small Words

(not only was the movie 100 times more clever than I would have expected, it's got a killer little soundtrack with tight little pop tunes)

Ok, I've been a little hesitant to post this, but I'm going to anyways. As lame as it is to say, this is probably one of my favorite songs this year. Who else can make a song about getting a woman drunk at a club and then having sex with her seem so romantic and sweet? The video, as well as the song, has some unintentionally hilarious moments.

T-Pain - 'Buy U A Drank'
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oy-nqyfR_w4

MIA paper planes
or anything else

this song hit today
in a big way

oh heavens yes! my yes!

I wouldn't call M.I.A. pop exactly, but it's certainly one of the best songs of the year . Of course, sometimes I wonder how much of me liking it is just The Clash sample.

Nothing on MIA's latest has struck me as much as her first CD did. But it's still good.

I can't wait to get the new Kylie CD ... but I still can't figure out if it's being released here, or if I have to get it as an import. Last time I checked Amazon, it only listed imports, but I've seen loads of reviews around for it, in publications that don't seem to pay attention to import-only stuff.

Have you heard Kylie's Put Yourself In My Place yet? It's one of her best songs I reckon. Was a hit for her in about '95

Thanks for reminding me! I just went to YouTube to check it out. I have to say, I'm not a huge fan of pop ballads. I much prefer upbeat stuff for my Big Dump Pop songs.

I've heard that song though - the chorus was really familiar. But I don't have it on any CDs, so I'm not sure where the heck I've heard it before.
