Ax, like the beard, but I love the dinosaur comic on the wall even more
Nice going there.

And thanks. Yeah, I love the comic. As soon as I saw it, I had to print it and put it up. I don't normally have things on the walls, but that and my framed One Tree Hill single are the exceptions.

Well I guess I'm used to Europe where they're pretty laid back about customs. If you fly into an EU airport and make a connection to another Eu airport, you often miss customs entirely. And India was pretty minimal on security, and in Uganda and Ghana I felt lucky the airports had paint on their walls let alone customs desks. In Lagos Nigeria I never really went through customs but I DID get a personal escort around the airport cause I didn't have a transit visa and I maybe needed one and maybe didn't. That was useful, as the soldier with me got impatient with the airline clerk tryign to make me pay $50 for my big bag and ordered her to check it.

Though weirdly enough, ghetto and scary as the Ghana and Uganda airports were upon arrival, they were nice and pretty and full of western-style duty frees on the way out. You'd think they'd want to make a good impression on the way in.

Going through Malaysian customs from Singapore was great, it consisted of a fat bloke sleeping in a chair and a cat.

That being said, if you managed to smuggle anything into Singapore to begin with, you probably deserved to be able to bring it into Malaysia.

Decent food though. Yeah that sounds awful. Was it just the only thing you could find near home? Seems like you need a replacement job more than a second job.

Fuck our boring airports!

Which has led my mind on a tangent. Boring airports --> boring train stations --> interesting train stations --> video of crowded-as-fuck trains in places like India where people sit on the roofs and stuff --> remembering that in some train videos from patriarchal societies and such, there are sometimes markings identifying separate carriages for men and women --> question for Ian or you or anybody else who may know: do seating divisions like that ever occur on planes too, like separate cabins in the aircraft are reserved for men or women only?

And they take a photo when you LEAVE in Thailand? WTF. I don't even see what the bloody point is.
Maybe so you don't leave yourself in Thailand and send out a double? But then, your passport has to match your face too... I dunno. I also probably wasn't looking at the camera.

I hate the US security measures not just because they're ridiculous and probably ineffective vs real danger but also because they make other countries retaliate with the same measures.

e.g. chips in passports. we wanted electronic so everyone else said f.u. go electronic too. so now i've got a passport that doesn't expire for 10 years, and is fugly as all hell to boot, i hate the new ones. and it's got a chip in it with 3 year old technology that contains my identity and travel history. So that any dipshit with a reader can steal it, or worse, someone can leave a bomb to trigger when american chips are near. The government claims it's secure but uh....no technology stays secure for 10 years and it's already been hacked.

You can microwave your passport to destroy the chip, but that might leave a burn mark which is evidence of a federal crime: tampering with your passport. So I took a hammer to the vague area where the chip is said to be in hopes of crushing it. My passport has a bunch of little dents on it but that's less illegal.
