Please vote for the tracklist you LIKE THE MOST.

Welcome to the third heat of the B&C Prog Island Album Game's second round! This competition is essentially edition 2.5 of the Desert Island Album Game, serving as a mini-tournament bridging the gap between the second and third editions, and we are trialling some new format ideas. This tournament alters the basic premise of the game a little. Instead of being stranded on a desert island and seeking the best tracklist to enjoy while there, we're heading off to Prog Island to savour the best that the prog genre has to offer. There is a strong emphasis in this competition not just on good individual songs, but on creating a cohesive work of musical art.

In the first heat of Round 2, Axver came away with his first victory in the competition over liamcool, 6-3. The table for Group 1 is now:

Forum name: total competition points, won, lost, votes for, votes against, votes difference
GibsonGirl: 2, 1, 0, 12, 4, +8.
liamcool: 2, 1, 1, 11, 11, 0.
Axver: 2, 1, 1, 10, 15, -5.
Supertracklist: 0, 0, 1, 5, 8, -3.

The second heat of Round 2 is still underway and has a day to go. Currently, GibsonGirl leads The Supertracklist 5-4. Please don't let this tournament die. This heat features Screwtape2 against hardyharhar. Below are the tracklistings.

Screwtape writes: My entry is called The Black Forest: Letters To My Son From Namibia, South Africa And The Land Of The Zulu. In short, The Black Forest. It is from the perspective of a young boy who is reading letters sent by his father who is in the military in Africa. The father is trying to explain what he is seeing in ways that his young son can understand. Unfortunately, there is no way to explain the need for suffering and pain to a child. In the end, the father realizes this and hopes his son carries this epiphany with him for the rest of his life. I wanted it to feel like a fairy tale book written by a disillusioned man in a schizophrenic world. The ability to use multiple artists allowed me to create the sense of long suites broken apart and scattered through out the playlist like broken thoughts in the father’s letters. I hope you enjoy my little playlist. In a world where we kill our heroes and our myths our last hope is that there is still a place where fairy tales exist.

At first I thought, “easy - Genesis ‘Foxtrot’ & ‘The Lamb’, Pink Floyd ‘DSOTM’, Yes ‘Close To The Edge’, first King Crimson and a couple odd tracks. That should be 4 hours”. But that would be too easy and there were many unknown bands I could give some brief exposure to. So that’s what I did. Most of these tracks are from the first wave of progressive rock, about 1970 through mid 70’s. My main years of interest in it. Though it was never embraced by the mainstream media, it was still an exciting and experimental branch of rock music. What most people forget is that the band members were still teenagers and college age when they began. I started off with King Crimson, because with all due respect to Sgt. Pepper, psychedelics, Moody Blues, early Floyd, this album probably had more influence on the direction of the early purveyors of ‘classical rock’ like Genesis, Yes and ELP, and therefore everything to follow. The first half is mainly UK bands, where prog was initially embraced. The one glaring omission is Pink Floyd, I just don’t have any on disc. The 2nd half takes us to Europe, where Genesis, Van Der Graaf Generator and others influenced a huge movement there. The groups here are from Belgium, France, Germany, Switzerland, Holland, and Italy. Most of these bands focused on longer tracks which are more along the traditional prog lines, but I wanted to get as many less known groups in as possible, so I chose tracks that were a bit shorter in duration. All in the hopes of giving a little exposure to some bands who for whatever reason fell through the cracks. An outcome all too common for many of the early prog groups. It was tough breaking up 25 minute songs and keeping some sort of flow going, so my Genesis ‘Lamb stew’ was scrapped because after each song there was a pause, ruining any continuity I was striving for. I kept a few tracks by others where it’s obvious another song had begun, but I tried to keep that to a minimum.

I’m pretty sure I’ve committed votercide with this list, but my intention here is to give a few people who enjoy this music a chance to hear some things that are obscure and soon to be forgotten. I’m not sure I’d take all these if I was to be dropped on a desert island, but I know I’d miss them if I didn’t. 4 hours isn’t very long in the realm of progressive rock.

1. KING CRIMSON – “21st Century Schizoid Man” In The Court Of The Crimson King (7:20)
2. THE STRAWBS – “Hero & Heroine” Hero & Heroine (3:20)

As I mentioned when I went up against Screwtape in the first round, I really like his playlist and thought it was one of the best. I obviously couldn't vote for him the first time, but I will be now.

Thanks for getting this underway, phanan. Much appreciated. :)

I too went for Screwtape. He really knows how to create a fantastic, cohesive atmosphere and a coherent, interesting concept. I came incredibly close to voting for him last time around, so this time it was very easy to choose him.

That said, hardyharhar has some really, really interesting stuff!

Thanks for listening guys & gals. I know it was a bit of a challenge getting through the second half.

Phanan - Check out Machiavel. I think you'd like them. Jester & Mechanical Moonbeams their best efforts.

Had to vote for myself so I wasn't shut out. I think I saw some votes on the grassy knoll. Reviewing the Magruder film now

Axver (or anyone else who is so inclined) - I'd like to ask a favor. As I've said before, I like a lot of the metal bands, but don't have much chance to check them out. Mainly fast & heavy, keyboards are a big plus. I like Emperor, Entombed, Carcass, Bolthrower, early Earache label, Death (Scream Bloody Gore), etc........ I can deal with the anti-religion stance many take, but have no time for the outright racism others endorse. If it's just the Nordic mythology and we're proud of our ancient culture stuff, I'm okay with that. Anyways, if you get a few moments in the future, if you could throw some names my way that you think I may like, I'd really appreciate it. :help: I can tell you have a voracious musical appetite, so I thought I'd ask. Thanks.

Always looking for new music, just doesn't seem to be as much that I like as in the 70's. Oh well..............

hardyharhar, here's some bands you may just enjoy:

Cynic: They have only one album, Focus, but it really redefined the whole technical death metal scene and introduced some serious jazz fusion elements to the genre. Many of today's technically proficient death metal groups owe a huge debt to Cynic - and none have really replicated Focus's goodness. In 2004, it was released with three tracks remastered, and Veil Of Maya and How Could I? are godly. The keyboard intro to How Could I? owns. Also, Sean Malone is the single greatest bassist I have ever heard in my life - he now teaches music at the University of Oregon, if that gives you any idea of his knowledge of music.

Arcturus: Ever wished you could listen to Hellhammer without having to put up with Mayhem? Arcturus is one way to do so. It helps that their music is fucking amazing. GREAT keyboard leads. La Masquerade Infernale is normally considered their best, but I am mainly familiar with The Sham Mirrors and highly recommend it. Garm's singing is also something else; one part of Nightmare Heaven ("and the miracle is that nothing has happened/nothing has a history or a naaaaaaaaaaaaame") is simply INCREDIBLE.

Antestor: Ever wished you could listen to Hellhammer ... in a Christian black metal band? I'm not kidding. Hellhammer has done much of their drumming, including everything on The Forsaken, which is my second favourite black metal album ever.

Horde: And my favourite black metal album ever? Amusingly enough, also by a Christian band. Horde's Hellig Usvart ("holy unblack" in Norwegian) is really a landmark album. It was recorded by just one guy - an Australian, no less. The record company got death threats for releasing it from the hyper-anti-religious folk. Shame, as they're missing out on Thine Hour Hast Come, my favourite black metal song.

Borknagar: In some ways an atmospheric/black metal supergroup. At different times, they've had vocalists such as Garm, ICS Vortex, and Vintersorg. I mainly listen to the album Empiricism - very spacious, atmospheric music at times, but it also possesses a pounding intensity (re: intro of The Genuine Pulse).

Dan Swanö: His album Moontower is what you would get if you tried to form a supergroup of death metal musicians with a couple of eighties stars - except he recorded it all himself. It combines death metal styles with A LOT of keyboards. The keyboards really carry the songs in many places. It helps that Swanö is insanely talented at just about everything, is one of the most comprehensible growlers I've ever heard, and has a lovely clean singing voice.

Will that do for now?

Only about 12 hours to go now on this poll. Looks like Screwtape is going to record an easy win here.

Axver - Thanks for the tips. Already checked out Cynic. Liked Textures and the last song. Need some more listens. Looking forward to Borknagar. I'm glad I axed

As far as the vote goes, I'm taking my records and going home :madspit:
