It isn't hard to imagine happy children running into a school with flying rainbows and unicorns to the song. It is catchy but feels like a Saturday morning cartoon theme.

it is a great era. the songs from that period seemed to be either really great (the dream is over) or really terrible (uh, twilight).

i like those two too

Touche, touche. At the moment, I think you at least carry more credibility on Achtung than I do, here.

Well, I give it more credit than you do. Mine's almost purely a production thing, you actually hate all versions of a number of those songs.

There are loads of songs I suspect I only like because of the basslines...

(I don't think that's true of Babyface, but it does have a great line... and I only recently appreciated TTTYAATW when I noticed the bass on the ZooTV version... )

i don't get it either. i see that crap for just about every band i like, though. i'm like wtf? yes, let's just combine words
I suppose the truth is "it's the only instrumental we know of". I want U2 to play an instrumental on the next tour just to fuck with music n00bs. Or maybe the rest of the band should just play Things To Make And Do to drown out Bono while he's speechifying pre-One.

Is it really so hard to look at the album sleeve and see how the title is written? I think some people just aren't literate.

Well, I do like the 23 September 1997, Sarajevo performance of One.

And really, anybody with a discerning ear should agree on the production thing. Bloody hell, that album sounds like complete dogshit. I don't get how a band of U2's stature never seems to have good mixing. You'd think they could pay for the best.

I think that, like most things U2 do, they just don't see that they can do a lot better.

I suppose that's only to be expected from a band trying to find their sound. When they found it, they really did pretty wel. I'm also keen on Cartoon World, The Fool, and False Prophet. And some of the early gigs are seriously rockin'.

I mostly hate Bono's vocals and the lyrics in Babyface. Though the opening instrumentation sounds cheesy-awful too.
I guess my exposure to pre-Boy U2 has been very limited up till now... ie, that video of Street Missions.

But it's SUPPOSED to be creepy and cheesy-awful... I think the think I like about Babyface is that it sounds exactly like what it's supposed to be, if that makes any sense... The whole sound of it fits the idea.

TTMAD/J. Swallow sent, folks. A Celebration coming now, and not going to Ali as I believe she said she has it.

Here's my first opinion:

You should shut up.
