5 years ago I would have nominated Liz Phair, but she sold out BIG TIME.

I wouldn't describe Joni Mitchell as "rock chick", so she's out.

Love Chrissie Hynde.

The #1 spot has to be Patti Smith though. She broke down so many doors and really gave every performer after her the freedom to do and say whatever the fuck they wanted to, and in her own unique voice.

All you have to do is give one listen to Horses, consider when it was released and what came before/after it, and it's not hard to see.
