Pick the Best Music of 2007!

The friendliest place on the web for anyone that follows U2.
If you have answers, please help by responding to the unanswered posts.
This is what I needed for tonight (many, many more details and such to follow):

Tonight, for Teacher On The Radio’s 13th (and final) installment of the semester, I have a mix of 184 songs prepared on my laptop to play between 6pm and 7am. Depending on how the night goes and who shows up (and when) for morning rotation, I may exceed my thirteen-hour shift.

To the best of my knowledge, every song was released in 2007.

A complete playlist will follow, but here is my outline for the evening and the morning, divided into chapters. All times are estimates, of course.

Chapter One: Out of the Zone (6pm-7:30pm)
It’s supposed to be music variety, and I’m going out of my comfort zone just a little here with some recent prog metal, hip-hop, and pop-punk. Several shout-outs and dedications in this segment…….Not what we regularly hear on this show, but yo, so what!!!

Chapter Two: A Gospel of Girls, Good New Songs by the Good Ol’ Boys, and More (7:30pm-10pm)
B-sides, live tracks, and the intelligent babes of the music biz. And so much more. Too many of my favorite rock records of the year were recorded by men. But around 8pm, expect a hefty dose of aural affirmative action and estrogen energy with many of my favorite female vocalists of the year featured here. And most of the best of the best are younger than me. But many of WTTU’s deejays weren’t even born when I started listening to some of the artists featured in this section. Who said old fogies can’t kick it? Since I don’t expect my faculty friends to make it all night with me, there are several tracks here I think they will love.

Chapter Three: Already Classic Alt-Rock, Etc. (10pm-3:30am)
As much as I love other genres of music, alt-rock is, has been, and probably will always be my first and true love. In five hours of music and at least a few minutes of chatter from me, check out some of the best of the best of 2007. This is the stuff we will hopefully still listen to a year—or years—from now.

Chapter Four: Freak Folks, Obscure Oracles, Mellow Meditations, and Other Freaky Folks for 4am Friends (the graveyard shift til dawn and such)
Okay, you should be sleeping. And if you are awake, beware and prepare. Teacher on the Radio is going to massage your ears with the sounds of your dreams and your fears. This is where I play the stuff you never heard of and may never hear of because you should be sleeping. And at this point, I should (or may be) sleeping at the controls. Don’t worry, I will wake up to hobble home, just in time for the morning deejay to take over.

not even one little vote for rogue wave? lake michigan at least deserves a little recognition as one of the best songs of the year, not too mention harmonium

I loved both of their previous releases, but I was admittedly a bit disappointed with this one. Lake Michigan and Chicago x12 are both nice though.

They should of stayed on Sub Pop.

Agreed. It's great, but honestly I think their previous 3 are all as strong (and probably more consistant) than Ga Ga Ga Ga. Still good though. I guess critics and fans jumping the bandwagon late is better than never...

I kinda feel the same way about The National too.

But the thing with The National is that each of their albums has gotten better, yes the attention Boxer has gotten is exponential compared with their earlier releases, but it is their best and that's saying a lot coming on the heals of Alligator, the added instrumentation really gave it an extra element that I love. But they still sing about clothes too much haha.

Can I send you some papers to grade while you're playing tunes all night?

I'm just about done with my list. I'll have it posted within the next few days (after I finish those papers...)

When I tell my colleagues I already posted my grades, they kind of growl; I try not to rub it in.

One of my playlists somehow got corrupted, and I had to remix it live. I played til almost 8am, napped between 4-7am.

My body won't let me get back to sleep either. When darkness comes, I am sure.

I've heard a lot of good things about Fogerty's release and just haven't had the time to check it out. I'm going to have to take care of that.

01. St. Vincent- Marry Me
02. Silversun Pickups- Carnavas (released last year in the US but only here this year)
03. The Wildhearts- The Wildhearts
04. Super Furry Animals- Hey Venus

10. Beirut- The Flying Club Cup
11. Robert Wyatt- Comicopera
12. Monkey Swallows the Universe- Casket Letters
13. Tiny Dancers- Free School Milk
14. Manic Street Preachers- Send Away the Tigers
15. Patrick Watson- Close to Paradise

Here's my top 5.

Number Fiver: Songs Of Mass Destruction by Annie Lennox
Songs Of Mass Destruction is the sound of furious femininity in Annie Lennox’s classic sound. The tracks are playful and at the same time stunningly beautiful. This is an album of heart and understanding. It is probably the most beautiful album of the year. Ghosts In My Machine and Through The Glass Darkly are the album’s real standouts.

Number Four: Fear Of A Blank Planet by Porcupine Tree
Fear Of A Blank Planet is fluidic and acidic in its feel. At times it is suffocating and at other times it is freeing. Those two elements and the balance between them make this one of the year’s most rewarding listening experiences. As a total sound it is one of the year’s best albums. My favorite tune is Sleep Together with its strangle hold of bubbly effects.

Number Three: Zeitgeist by Smashing Pumpkins
The Smashing Pumpkins haven’t rocked like this since Cherub Rock. They also haven’t been this adult and political before. Zeitgeist doesn’t sound like anything else released this year. Songs like Tarantula, United States and Bleeding The Orchid stand out as some of the best rock tracks of the year. But what elevates this album to the three spot is its classic Pumpkins moments in Pomp And Circumstances and That’s The Way (My Love Is). They show that Billy Corgan still has the ability to create those moments of pure joy.

Number Two: Mantaray by Siouxsie Sioux
Mantaray is loud and industrial. It is blistering in its electronic attack. However it wouldn’t be Siouxsie Sioux if there wasn’t a marriage of one of the most unique voices in rock and a chaotic rhythm section. What makes this the third best album of the year is how beautifully that marriage comes together. Songs like Into A Swan, One Mile Below and They Will Follow You are evidence of that.

Number One: American Doll Posse by Tori Amos
American Doll Posse is one of those moment-in-time albums. It is in fact many things most of which are revelations on an artist whose work has inspired a generation. For the Tori Amos fan base this is a naked album presenting beautifully cut pieces of Tori in all her musical brilliance. This album was made by a poet, a feminist, a mother, a person of passion and a woman of strength and vitality. This is what every listener should come away with. For this album you are introduced to a few versions of Tori to expand the schizophrenic experience. Each song is credited to one of those dolls which I found to be quite unique when I first listened to the album. My personal favorites are Santa and Pip. Their tracks are the most beautiful and passionate of the album. Of the notable tracks, I found Dragon, Smokey Joe and Digital Ghost to be the best of the album. Dragon is the album’s closer and a Santa track. It is wrapped in a sense of sadness but hits you with its warm chorus. Smokey Joe is a relentless tune that feels like a heavy weight of sound is pressing down on you. This is the album’s darkest track. Digital Ghost might be the best track on the album with its elegance and calm. All these things add up to make this the top album of the year.

it doesn't change the world but does make it that little bit more happier

man this is hard. it doesn't seem like i checked out a lot of music this year... and i probably haven't by comparison to a lot of you.

here's a loose list:

1. radiohead - in rainbows
2. the good the bad and the queen - self titled
3. kevin drew - spirit if...
4. the national - boxer
5. modeselektor - happy birthday
6. emily haines - knives don't have your back
7. caribou - andorra
8. daft punk - alive in japan (i'm counting it  )
9. wilco - sky blue sky
10. the shins - wincing the night away

2007 was a year where i spent most of my time looking up stuff from the past, i guess. manic street preachers, spiritualized, placebo, final fantasy, and electronica as a whole took up most of my interest though i guess it'd be impossible to tell from my top ten list.

as i look through these lists again, i realize how many albums i forgot. lcd soundsystem in particular... and i really wish i'd checked out !!!

i should probably get on that.

as for favourite songs...
i'm avoiding all radiohead. it's too easy for me to put that in there. so radiohead excluded, i present the following:

modeselektor - deboutonner
modeselektor - the white flash
modeselektor - the dark side of the sun
modeselektor - happy birthday
the national - apartment story
the national - mistaken for strangers
kevin drew - safety bricks
kevin drew - when it begins
lcd soundsystem - all my friends
interpol - mammoth
the good the bad and the queen - soldier's tale
the good the bad and the queen - herculean
emily haines - dr. blind
emily haines - our hell
caribou - niobe
bjork - innocence
bjork - earth intruders
the shins - sleeping lessons
wilco - you are my face
wilco - what light
sugababes - about you now
stars - today will be better, i swear!
sigur ros - hljomalind
bat for lashes - what's a girl to do
bat for lashes - prescilla
jonny greenwood - hw/hope of new fields
radiohead - 4 minute warning (ok, i lied about no radiohead)

i will put these in order later.

This forum didn't discuss Spirit If... enough.

This forum doesn't discuss a lot of things enough.

Nice lists, Zoomers.

Impy, I know you're a huge Okervivialsidsnbfjdjdnd River fan, I've read many good things 'bout them, what's a good starting album?

Start with Black Sheep Boy and the Black Sheep Boy Appendix. They're seminal.

Then go to Stage Names (you could actually do this first, even).

Then go Don't Fall In Love With Everyone You See.

And then get Down the River of Golden Dreams, if not only for "Maine Island Lovers."

And here are my top 15 songs, at long last. Trying to keep it to one per artist:

1. LCD Soundsystem – “All My Friends”
2. Radiohead – “15 Step”
3. The National – “Apartment Story”
4. Wilco – “You Are My Face”
5. Sigur Rós – “Hljómalind”
6. Arcade Fire – “Keep the Car Running”
7. Spoon – “Don’t Make Me a Target”
8. Feist – “Past In Present”
9. Bright Eyes – “Four Winds”
10. Iron & Wine – “Pagan Angel and a Borrowed Car”
11. Broken Social Scene presents Kevin Drew – “Fucked Up Kid”
12. Explosions in the Sky – “The Birth and Death of the Day”
13. The White Stripes – “Rag & Bone”
14. Okkervil Rivcer – “Plus Ones”
15. Andrew Bird – “Spare-Ohs”

And my honorable mention albums to amend to my top 25 list:

Bloc Party - A Weekend in the City
Bruce Springsteen - Magic
Clap Your Hands Say Yeah - Some Loud Thunder
The Good, the Bad, and the Queen - The Good, the Bad, and the Queen
Kings of Leon - Because of the Times
Modest Mouse - We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank
The Shins - Wincing the Night Away
Stars - In Our Bedroom After the War
Amy Winehouse - Back to Black

4. Bat For Lashes - Fur & Gold
