I don't know. I think it was being eaten away by Termites??

I took the photos of people at my brothers Choir Camp in Castro Valley.

The other ones in my favorite spot, Moss Beach, CA

Looks like maybe woodpecker holes, if the tree had lots of bugs. It looks kinda like this and these are from a woodpecker: http://www.photoarrow.com/duo/hu6603x353x265.jpg . I think termites eat from the inside out and live in an adjacent mound.

Cool photo, either way!
