they have followed somewhat similar career paths, which do you rank higher?

Pacino has been in movies like Scarface, The Godfather, Scent of a Woman, Sea of Love, Glengarry Glen Ross, The Devil's Advocate, A Dog Day Afternoon

Deniro has starred in films like Raging Bull, Taxi Driver, Midnight Run, The Godfather II, Goodfellas, Casino, Heat and even Meet the Parents which was actually quite funny, though most of the credit for that goes to Ben Stiller

so which of the two do you prefer?

oh for me this is a no brainer...

de Niro by far.... he doesnt scream, its all in his eyes and facial inflections like Mel Gibson.... whereas Pacino has tendencies to get louder cuz he's... well he's Italian LOL.... but de Niro controls it even tho he's Italian hehehe... btw my grandfather looks so much like de Niro

Pacino for The Godfather 1 and 2 and films like The Insider...he is also an ultra impressive guy whenever i hear him speak on a topic.

De Niro is great as well, and I enjoy the wider range of roles he has embraced.

I dont really think you can seperate the two...but im impressed that their careers have been of a consistently high standard, unlike say a Ray Liotta who showed in Goodfellas he had a great deal of talent but has been involved in some fairly mixed projects since then.

Gotta go for Deniro here...but I'm biased since Goodfellas is very high on my list of favorite movies. Also gotta love Taxi Driver, such a fun, light-hearted film...

It is kind of like comparing JT to AB...they are both great!!!!

Slight edge to Pacino:
The concluding scene in "The Devil's Advocate" is one of the finest moments in cinematic history....

DeNiro.

Taxi Driver is an amazing film!

They were both excellent in Heat. Both films have fantastic soundtracks. U2 has a track from Passengers on Heat, Always Forever I think.

Good thread The Wanderer.

Either one of these guys can just about turn any project into gold.

I want to point out that they have had some very solid supporting roles such as De Niro in 'Bronx Tale' and 'Sleepers'

Pacino is more sporadic, such as his outbursts in 'Scent of a woman' and 'Scarface'.

I like the name De Niro better. He is more reserved, very cunning and sharp, yet ruthless. And very funny at times, 'Analyze this'.

Pacino in 'Devil's Advocate' had to be the consummate hollywood devil in a humans skin. It dosen't get too much better than that.

NO CONTEST:

Al PACINO!!!!
The man is a GOD, I tell you, not a mere actor, that man has one of the finest acting styles ever, and there's never been a movie of his that I didn't like; De Niro has been in countless of shit films including RONIN and THE UNTOUCHABLES. Pacino's pefromance in 'SCENT OF A WOMAN' is incredible not to mention THE INSIDER, THE GODFATHER TRILOGY and SCARFACE... oh and DICK TRACY, he's frigging hilarious there.

Here's the point; the very last scenes of Godfather III, where they kill off his daughter, and he holds her in his arms, and.. when Intermezzo starts playing in the BAckground, Corleone just lies there as if his soul is aching to scream out, and he lets out a scream so prolongued it even causes his family to stop mourning for a sec, because it really looks like he's going to burst into a thousand pieces. His eyes bulge out of a pain so terrible, and his hands grip the sides of his face in fear that his body will just burst into flames, before Coppola allows us to hear his scream of pain; its a terrible terrible scream that just really moves me everytime I see the entire scene - if any other actor had screamed like Pacino, it would have been a comical scene, not the heart-breaking episode that it is. ANd it IS heart-breaking, I couldn't stop sniffing the first five times I saw it, and even now it makes me want to cry.

Pacino's finest moment. No words, no script ; just a soul in pain. He plays it marvellously.

Pacino; the one and only.

Ant.

ooh major toughie
i love them both but i think De Niro is a little higher because his ability to create a character astounds me with every role.
They are the only 2 u could hold up against each other in my opinion.
