Another one of those, hmm, yeah cat isn't feeling good but doesn't appear to be on the verge of death.

This guy had been in the hospital on fluids since Sunday, had come in for vomiting. I had seen him a week ago, bloodwork all pretty normal. We were just doing supportive care the past few days, antibiotics, meds to settle his stomach cuz we had no idea why he wasn't feeling good. Got him out at 7pm to feed him, did ok, pulled blood to recheck - all still fine. At 8:30, the tech tells me he is panting and breathing with his mouth open (cats do not pant). He is really pale, seem uncomfotable. Oxygen levels are good, double check xrays to make sure no fluid in his lungs - look fine. Obviously not stable to leave unattended overnight so I check with the owner to see if it's ok to take him to a 24 hour ER facility - she approves and I am the one who gets to drive him. As we try to load him in the carrier, he fusses and doesn't want to go in - I see this as a good sign. The ER is about 10 minutes away, 5 minutes into the drive I am pretty sure he is no longer breathing but hard to tell in the dark car. I race like a madwoman, they rush him to the back when I walk in.

He has no pulse, not breathing. Get his heart restarted but not breathing on his own. They notice his belly is pretty distended, I had noticed that right before we left but I assumed it was from him swallowing air as they tend to do when they pant. They passed a stomach tube and got some air out but belly didn't change much. Put an ultrasound probe on his belly, saw fluid, tapped for a sample - looks like pure blood. So all of these signs are related to him bleeding out into his belly. He was not dropped/injured here in the hospital so this was not even a thought in my mind that he would be having internal bleeding. The er doc is guessing he probably had a tumor in his belly that for whatever reason ruptured out of the blue. Tried for 45 minutes to bring him back but no luck.

Again, probably no way to have anticpated any of this or prevented it, but still, not how I expected to finish my night. I guess the one good thing is we picked up on it before we left and at least gave him a chance. If this had started after we left we would have just found a dead cat in the morning (have had that happen and that REALLY sucks too). This poor guy was only 9

Flargh.

God I hope not No, I have a strong feeling that this probably was cancer - the one little thing that was off on his bloodwork was his calcium levels - high end of normal for a cat is 11.3 and he was at 11.6. Not sky high but this can sometimes be a clue to cancer. He didn't have any masses/tumors that we could feel in his belly - my guess is that he probably had one tucked inside his liver that we couldn't feel. We were going to recommend tomorrow that he have an ultrasound if he was not getting better. Too late

I so just put my cursor over to see if it was an interesting link.

And bls, that's a rough night. You did give him a fighting chance. I'd be happy to know that if he was mine.
