Anyone who questions the presence of #9 would be well served by watching this:

umm, and this too, for the hell of it:

So, Losing My Religion, Everybody Hurts, One I Love, Man On The Moon, and It's The End Of The World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine) all fail to make it?

LIST RENDERED INVALID

Everybody Hurts...hurts.

I read a review of Monster when it came out that suggested EH was split into two superior songs on the album, Strange Currencies and Tongue. They were right.

Unlike U2, R.E.M.'s singles are rarely among the best songs on the albums.

In no particular order:

1. Man On The Moon
2. The Great Beyond
3. Losing My Religion
4. What's The Frequency, Kenneth?
5. Disturbance At The Heron House
6. Welcome To The Occupation
7. Suspicion
8. The Sidewinder Sleeps Tonite
9. World Leader Pretend
10. Nightswimming
11. Find The River
12. Everybody Hurts
13. Texarkana
14. Driver 8
15. Swan Swan H

I can't stand Everybody Hurts. It's a bathroom break song, for sure.

1. Pilgrimage (Murmur)
2. Sitting Still (Mumur)
3. Life and How to Live It (Fables of the Reconstruction)
4. Begin the Begin (Life's Rich Pageant)
5. Cuyahoga (Life's Rich Pageant)
6. Welcome to the Occupation (Document)
7. Disturbance at the Heron House (Document)
8. You Are the Everything (Green)
9. Texarkana (Out of Time)
10. Find the River (Automatic For the People)
11. Drive (Automatic For the People)
12. The Wake-Up Bomb (New Adventures In Hi-Fi)
13. The Great Beyond (Man on the Moon soundtrack)
14. Daysleeper (Up)
15. Imitation of Life (Reveal)

And honorable mention to Wall of Death, which is REM covering the Richard Thompson song. It's wonderful.

1. Find the River (Automatic...)
2. It's the End of the World... (Document)
3. Leave (New Adventures...)
4. Man on the Moon (Automatic...)
5. Gardening at Night (the version on Eponymous)

11. What's the Frequency, Kenneth? (Monster)
12. Radio Free Europe (Single)
13. Imitation of Life (Reveal)
14. Orange Crush (Green)
15. The Great Beyond (EP)

Their cover of Draggin' the Line off of the Austin Powers 2 soundtrack is really good, too.

1. Everybody Hurts
2. Orange Crush
3. Losing My Religion
4. The One I Love
5. Texarkana
6. Shiny Happy People
7. It's The End Of The World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine)

I was going to post the exact same thing.

Country Feedback was my wedding song.

(I've been divorced for years, but that's not the point)

From each album

Chronic Town - Carnival Of Sorts (Box Cars)
Murmur - Pilgrimage
Reckoning - Harborcoat
Fables - Driver 8
Lifes Rich Pageant - These Days; I Believe
Document - Finest Worksong
Green - Orange Crush
Out Of Time - Country Feedback
Automatic For The People - Drive
Monster - Crush With Eyeliner
New Adventures - Binky The Doormat
Up - Lotus
Reveal - The Lifting
Around The Sun - Ascent Of Man
New LP - Living Well's The Best Revenge

I added Chronic Town and the one from LP14 to make 15 songs.
I guess my actual top 15 would look a lot different however as I definitely prefer some albums to others. I'll have to think about it for awhile though.

I agree, but it was used to perfection in The Office episode "The Fire."

Stipe repeating "crazy what you could've had" over and over was probably a pretty bad omen.

And LMP, do you even have any of the first 4 albums? Nothing from there save for the Eponymous stuff?

Tsk, tsk.

Also, if we're doing special mentions, I'll put in a vote for the cover of the Velvet Underground's Femme Fatale from Dead Letter Office. Once of Stipe's greatest vocal performances, and I think he blows Nico's out of the water. Their version of Pale Blue Eyes ain't too bad either...

I have a few songs here and there from Murmur, Lifes Rich Pageant, Reckoning, and Fables, but nothing too substantial. I'll probably torrent that shit after I get through my latest Radiohead obsession.

1. Suspicion
2. What's The Frequency, Kenneth?
3. Monty Got A Raw Deal
4. Nightswimming
5. Man On The Moon
6. Lotus
7. Find The River

9. It's The End Of The World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine)
10. Star 69
11. Daysleeper
12. I Don't Sleep, I Dream
13. Finest Worksong
14. Talk About The Passion
15. Pilgrimage

That was tough.

:( I love that song. Would take it in a heartbeat over tripe like Everybody Hurts, which I only liked once. I was very depressed that day.

I know I'm leaving tons of great songs off, but what can you do?

I don't mind Everybody Hurts. It wouldn't make my favorites list, and I don't go looking for it, but when it comes on iTunes, I don't fast forward past it either. Edit: Actually, I just put it on -- I admit it, I like the song! Still wouldn't make my favorites list, though.

about 100 of their songs could be in my top 15 any day though

and I don't get the Everybody hurts hatred
it might be an incredibly straightforward song, but it's hardly ever been done so beautifully
