I work in a shop which means the cracking out the Christmas Cds very soon. We've got the standards eg. Frankie and Deano, White Christmas, even Mariah Carey:no: .
We've had the same ones for 10 years and it's driving me bonkers. Can anyone recommend some halfway decent Chrissy CDs?

THanks:pray:

You want a "rawk" xmas?

Good luck.

Try Elvis. Seriously, Elvis sang some good Xmas tunes.

Though I've always been partial to Johnny Mathis.

I've got Johnny Cash & Neil Young singing "Litttle Drummer Boy."

We should make and Interference Xmas album.

Another suggestion: Father Christmas- The Kinks.

U2 - "Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)"

Speaking of which, the original version is on the Phil Spector Christmas album. Half of the album is really great, most of the other half is very meh, and the remaining songs are a big "wtf".

But it's worth getting up for the excellent bits.

If you like mellow but not cheesy, you can never, ever go wrong with Vince Guaraldi's "A Charlie Brown Christmas."

Sufjan Stevens' Songs For Christmas album is also a bargain.

That is a good one. I was working at Sears last holiday season, and we had the same CD on repeat all day. Luckily, that song was on it. I might have gone completely insane otherwise.

I don't know what that means.

Sorry. That's the Ben Keith Christmas album that has Neil Young and Johnny Cash doing "The Little Drummer Boy." And Neil doing "What Child Is This?"

Smashing Pumpkins - Christmastime is pretty good, too. As is Coldplay's cover of The Pretenders' "2000 Miles"

I love David Bowie and Bing Crosby's "Little Drummer Boy" to death.

Cool. Might have to hunt that down.

Low's Christmas EP is quite good. Similar to Sufjan, you're going to get a lot of religious themes though, which a lot of people ironically don't like in Christmas music.

If you want RNR, howz about 'A Very Special Christmas'

1. Santa Claus Is Coming To Town - The Pointer Sisters
2. Winter Wonderland - Eurythmics
3. Do You Hear What I Hear? - Whitney Houston
4. Merry Christmas Baby - Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band
5. Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas -The Pretenders
6. I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus - John Cougar Mellencamp
7. Gabriel's Message - Sting
8. Christmas In Hollis - Run-D.M.C.
9. Christmas (Baby Please Come Home) - U2
10. Santa Baby - Madonna
11. The Little Drummer Boy - Bob Seger & The Silver Bullet Band
12. Run Rudolph Run - Bryan Adams
13. I Wish Everyday Could Be Like Christmas-Bon Jovi
14. The Coventry Carol - Alison Moyet
15. Silent Night - Stevie Nicks

There used to be this really cool blog last year that had tons of Christmas music on it.

I don't remember the address and I expect most of the files are gone now but it was nice to hear all sorts of oddball Christmas tunes.

Anyway 'Christmas in Hollis' is like, best Christmas song ever.

I like the first Very Special Christmas CD, but it's one of those CDs where I love about half the songs and find the other half to be crap.

I need to pick up that Sufjan Christmas CD set.

I adore the Bright Eyes Christmas album. Doesn't even have to be the holiday season for me to bust those songs out.

my (predictable) votes...Sujan's is a box set of a lot of christmas songs.

Not sure why I don't have this, I should pick it up soon I guess.

I also had absolutely no idea Cocteau Twins had Christmas songs, Toscano. I''ll have to look those up as well.

They're only predictable because they're awesome, Zonemeister.

My mother is obsessed with Christmas music.

I think her favorite is Nat King Cole's Christmas album. She also likes Michael W. Smith's.

Nat King Cole's version of "The Christmas Song" is my all-time favorite Christmas song.

That opening swoop of strings!
That piano solo!
That VOICE!

Barenaked Ladies - Barenaked For The holidays is good fun - and even includes a few Hannukah tunes!

Also check out 'The Night Santa Went Crazy' by Wierd Al... top tune!

Lyrics:

Down in the workshop all the elves were makin' toys
For the good Gentile girls and the good Gentile boys
When the boss busted in, nearly scared 'em half to death
Had a rifle in his hands and cheap whiskey on his breath
From his beard to his boots he was covered with ammo
Like a big fat drunk disgruntled Yuletide Rambo
And he smiled as he said with a twinkle in his eye,
"Merry Christmas to all - now you're all gonna die!"

The night Santa went crazy
The night St. Nick went insane
Realized he'd been gettin' a raw deal
Something finally must have snapped in his brain

Well, the workshop is gone now, he decided to bomb it
Everywhere you'll find pieces of Cupid and Comet
And he tied up his helpers and he held the elves hostage
And he ground up poor Rudolph into reindeer sausage
He got Dancer and Prancer with an old German Luger
And he slashed up Dasher just like Freddy Krueger
And he picked up a flamethrower and he barbequed Blitzen
And he took a big bite and said, "It tastes just like chicken!"

The night Santa went crazy
The night Kris Kringle went nuts
Now you can't hardly walk around the North Pole
Without steppin' in reindeer guts

There's the National Guard and the F.B.I.
There's a van from the Eyewitness News
And helicopters circlin' 'round in the sky
And the bullets are flyin', the body count's risin'
And everyone's dyin' to know, oh Santa, why?
My my my my my my
You used to be such a jolly guy

Yes, Virginia, now Santa's doin' time
In a federal prison for his infamous crime
Hey, little friend, now don't you cry no more tears
He'll be out with good behavior in 700 more years
But now Vixen's in therapy and Donner's still nervous
And the elves all got jobs working for the postal service
And they say Mrs. Clause, she's on the phone every night
With her lawyer negotiating the movie rights

They're talkin' bout - the night Santa went crazy
The night St. Nicholas flipped
Broke his back for some milk and cookies
Sounds to me like he was tired of gettin' gypped

Wo, the night Santa went crazy
The night St. Nick went insane
Realized he's gettin' a raw deal
Something finally must have snapped in his brain
Wo, something finally must have snapped in his brain
Tell ya, something finally must have snapped... in his brain

Sarah McLachlan's, "Wintersong" - probably the only Christmas CD that doesn't drive me up a wall. I guess it's mainly due in part to the bulk of the material not being the typical, "holly-jolly" Christmas music you hear on every oddball FM radio station this time of year...

Her version of "Noel" =

Also, Trans-Siberian Orchestra is always nice ("Christmas Eve, Sarajevo" = ).
