I know people like to avoid U2 fanaticism in this forum, but an exception might have to be made this time.

When I saw the thread title I immediately thought...

U2 - POP
Discotheque
Do You Feel Loved
Mofo

...although one might argue that Mofo could have been a more explosive opener.

But the Joshua Tree is definitely up there!

I can't think of anything to top the Holy Trinity opening The Joshua Tree, but Crowded House's first album's beginning series of Mean To Me/World Where You Live/Now We're Getting Somewhere is pretty amazing.

Iron & Wine - Our Endless Numbered Days

"On Your Wings"
"Naked As We Came"
"Cinder & Smoke"

and don't know how this could get overlooked...

"Everything In Its Right Place"
"Kid A"
"The National Anthem"

Radiohead - Kid A
U2- War
Bob Dylan - Blood on the Tracks
Daft Punk - Discovery

oh yeah!!!!
that daft punk album starts out pretty fucking hot!
good call.

I really like how Radiohead mix their tracks, especially the openings. My top three:

Radiohead - Kid A (the best collection of blips and bleeps ever)
Radiohead - The Bends
U2 - Pop

i agree whole heartedly with Daft Punk's "Discovery".

Radiohead - Amnesiac
Blur - The Great Escape
Jeff Buckley - Grace
Average White Band - Average White Band

jeff buckley:drool:

I was about to put Grace on my list, but opted not to since both Dream Brother and Lover You Should Have Come Over are not the first 3 tracks...however, Last Goodbye is one of the most perfect songs ever written.

The Cure - Disintegration:
1. Plainsong
2. Pictures of You
3. Closedown

oh yes.

also, personally, I really like the first three tracks on Hüsker Dü's Warehouse album:
1. These Important Years
2. Charity, Chastity, Prudence and Hope
3. Standing in the Rain
but then I always have to add
4. Back From Somewhere
I don't think anybody else really likes that album though.

Pixies - Doolittle
1. Debaser
2. Tame
3. Wave of Mutilation
I'm not usually fond of Tame on its own but it sounds fantastic in that position.

R.E.M. - Reckoning
1. Harborcoat
2. 7 Chinese Brothers
3. So. Central Rain

plus all the U2 ones mentioned.

Metallica:
1. Battery
2. Master Of Puppets

1. Where The Streets Have No Name
2. I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For
3. With Or Without You

3. Planet Caravan

U2:
1. Zoo Station
2. Even Better Than The Real Thing
3. One

The Beatles:
1. Taxman
2. Eleanor Rigby

Finally someone mentions Sticky Fingers! I'd have to go with that, The Joshua Tree, or R.E.M.'s Document (Finest Worksong, Welcome to the Occupation, Exhuming McCarthy).

Steely Dan's opening to Aja ain't half bad either. Black Cow, Aja, and Deacon Blues. That's the whole first side of the album in record format!

i agree with (disagree with, and am indifferent toward) a bunch of stuff already mentioned. i'd like to add...

dropkick murphys - do or die:
cadence to arms
do or die
get up

social distortion - sex, love & rock n roll
reach for the sky
highway 101
don't take me for granted

the bruisers - better days:
better days
badlands
chrome

ducky boys - three chords & the truth
