I'd imagine there are some Oils fans on here, especially amongst the Aussies and Kiwis.

I just found some great Oils videos on YouTube.

I started to love this band when I lived in Melbourne in the mid 80s (age 9 to 11) but news of them in the US is hard to come by, especially as they're no longer officially together.

Bono speaking on the great Aussie band:

Midnight Oil -- my first concert ever.
It was dubbed Planet Party and Matthew Sweet, They Might Be Giants, Houthouse Flowers and someone else came. Good times.

Their last album was pretty good. It's name is escaping me at the moment.

Hey was that in 1994? I saw that same tour in St. Louis, haha, called PointFest after a local radio station there.

The only time I saw them live- incredible show!

Last album: Capricornia- I've never heard the whole thing as it's never in local music stores when I think to look. May have to order it online sometime.

They've done some pretty good stuff, especially the 10 to 1 album and one of my favourite Aussie songs ever, Forgotten Years.

Yes. Capricornia. Great, great album. "Too Much Sunshine" kicks ass.

My favorite band ever.

I got to see them front row at their last ever U.S. concert in 2002, and got to meet them afterwards.

They put on such an intense live show!

I'm still mad they hung it up, and yes, Capricornia is a great album
but I enjoy their entire catalogue of music.

I love them. My favorite song of theirs is "One Country."

I love 'Blue Sky Mining' and 'Diesel & Dust'. Got to see them live about 3-4 times, the last two being a month after 9/11 at the House Of Blues in Hollywood (holds about 1000). Then they came back in March of 2002 to the same venue. Again, They were an incredible band live  So much power and passion (pardon the pun, but it's true). I was so sad when Peter decided to leave the band. And Bono's speech last year when the Oils were inducted into the Aussie Hall of Fame (don't know the exact name). I wish they had performed.

As for fave songs, I was pondering this earlier in the week. One Country comes to mind, as do: Dead Heart, King Of The Mountain, Dreamworld, Sometimes, Forgotten Years,...

I would think that many U2 fans would like them if they have not heard them. There are definite similarities.

Dead Heart
Truganini
Dreamworld
Now or Never Land

are a few of my favorites

I hope they reunite at some point- for any
Aussie fans here- esp. in the area he represents- a question: do you think Peter Garrett is doing more for the world in politics than he did in the band?

Can't say I've followed Peter Garrett's political career all too closely, but he's certainly managed to stay in the news lately.

As long as he is still dancing the Peter Garrett dance while he's doing it....

 (yeah like that)

Holy shit!!! Is that seriously Peter Garrett?

As for the politics question, he did more for the band, but that's only because at the level of parliament he's in he doesn't really have an opportunity to do or to change anything.

I think he's doing worse overall. The party he is now a part of has backflipped on our energy debate. Our PM wants to sell uranium as per G.W's wishes, and now Rudd (the Labor leader whose camp Garrett jumped to) has backed off his no nuclear stance and agreed to mine uranium and pursue nuclear power because clean coal is 'not an option'.

Hmm, thanks.

What are considered the best sources of renewable energy nowadays?

I guess I have the best impressions of solar and wind. Natural gas also gets mentions. I hear atomic//nuclear energy is big in Europe, but most in this part of the world are very wary of it.
