Top 10 Albums of 2005

I guess it's about that time. The OutKast album has been pushed back so I don't think there's anything else of note coming out before the end of the year.

1. Sleater-Kinney, The Woods.
The Great Leap Forward. Maybe the best rock band in America.

2. Super Furry Animals, Love Kraft
Sophisticated bliss. If Radiohead had a sense of humor and took a few more tips from Brian Wilson, they might come close to this.

3. Kanye West, Late Registration.
Not one weak track on a long record. A rare case of something living up to its hype.

4. Spoon, Gimme Fiction
Why this band isn't huge is beyond me.

5. Stephen Malkmus, Face the Truth
Quickly becoming my favorite post-Pavement solo effort.

6. New Order, Waiting for the Sirens' Call
Still got it.

7. Fiona Apple, Extraordinary Machine
Despite some songs being superior on the leaked version, still an impressive, soulful work.

8. The White Stripes, Get Behind Me Satan
I prefer the guitar heroics of the last album, but I can't fault them for trying something different as it's unlike anything else I've heard in a while.

9. Keren Ann, Nolita
A very distinct voice, mood music very well done.

10. My Morning Jacket, Z
A bit of a disappointment as I was expecting great things from this, but still a very good listen. Will probably grow on me.

just missed the cut: Madonna, Confessions on a Dance Floor. A lot of fun, just not as varied and ambitious as she usually is.

very curious to see everyone else's list...

Albums I loved this year, in no partick order:

-Fiona Apple, Extraordinary Machine
-The White Stripes, Get Behind Me Satan
-BRMC, Howl
-Arcade Fire, Funeral
-Interpol, Antics
-The Killers, Hot Fuss
-Snow Patrol, Final Straw
-Raveonettes, Pretty in Black

The White Stripes - Get Behind Me Satan
They're the band that completes my top 5 with Radiohead, U2, Coldplay, and Wilco, and I think this is their finest, most diverse record yet. I was skeptical if they could top Elephant. They didn't just top it, they demolished it and pissed on its ashes.

2.
sufjanstevens_illinoise.jpg

Sufjan Stevens - Illinoise
Everything about this album is wonderful. Such a daunting task, making an album or EP for each state, but if the rest are as good as this one, he'll be one of the greats of all time.

3.
imwideawake200.jpg

Bright Eyes - I'm Wide Awake It's Morning
Perfect from top to bottom. Better than anything he's ever done. Beautiful and in some cases haunting songs.

4.
album_2399_218.jpg

Aqualung - Strange And Beautiful
Sort of a late addition, as I've only gotten into it within this last week, but man is it good. Quite different from anything else that's out right now, it's a very solid debut record.

5.

Sigur Ros - Takk...
Not as good as AB. Not as good as ( ). But still, it's terrific. Sigur Ros at their most accessable, maybe, but still has some great chill-enducing moments. "Glosoli" is one of my favorite tracks in their catalogue now.

6.
3330724_dcfc_200.jpg

Death Cab For Cutie - Plans
Death Cab's major label debut sticks with their already winning formular, but it is certainly not worse off for it. Of course the follow-up to Transatlanticism would be tough, and they didn't surpass that last album, but they made another great one filled with some instant Death Cab classics ('Marching Bands Of Manhattan', 'What Sarah Said', 'Brothers On A Hotel Bed')

7.
robert%20plant.jpg

Robert Plant & The Strange Sensation - Mighty Rearranger
He came back. His best since Zep. The Stange Sensation is an enormously talented band, and they've made songs here that could possibly be whispered in the same breath as some of the Zeppelin monsters Plant is more famous for.

8.
13377.jpg

Nine Inch Nails - With Teeth
I thought it would be good, but not this good. The best since Downward Spiral (not to slag off The Fragile) and, in time, it just might be better. Reznor has made yet another truly excellent record.

9.
gorillaz-demondays.jpg

Gorillaz - Demon Days
Unlike anything I've ever heard. I love this one, top to bottom. No sophomore slump here. This one's better than their debut.

10.
3444854_wilco_200.jpg

Wilco - Kicking Television: Live In Chicago
Not really a new album, so much, but it's just too good to pass up. It was about time one of the best live bands around puts out a live record. Along with The White Stripes, the most important American band right now.

1. Sufjan Stevens - Illinois
2. Wolf Parade - Apologies the the Queen Mary

Hmmm, you sound like Robert Hilburn.

Is that supposed to be a compliment? And do the choices seem like a mainstream rock critic's picks, or just my writing?:eyebrow:

You missed Coldplay, X&Y and Echo and the Bunnymen, Siberia.

Not to mention Porcupine Tree. Deadwing sounds better with every listen.

1. Madonna - Confessions On A Dancefloor [energic, contagious. may not be her most innovative album, but it's consistent, very well thought and conceived, and on the pedestral of Like a Prayer and Ray Of Light. I just love the album.]

2. Coldplay - X&Y [enough said about this album... hop this does not turn in another Coldplay discussion ahahah]

3. Oasis - Don't Believe the Truth [I hate Oasis, but I must admit that the new açbum is very good]

4. The Cardigans - Super Extra Gravity [I was amazed when I heard it. Great melodies, and the lead vocal from nina Persson are great too. Good album!]

5. Gorillaz - Demon Days [I don't like the band (band? what band?), but I admit the album is very very good. Great melodies, great production, inteligent songs]

6. Arcade fire - Funeral [Very good album. Nice for a recent thing]

7. Interpol - Antics [idem]

8. The White Stripes - Get Behind Me Satan [musical direction changed a lot, but IMO this album is better than its predecessor...]

9. Franz Ferdinand - You Could Have It So Much Better [it's a regression in comparison to them first album, however, the second one still make goals. Still a good band and having a good sound]

10. Mariah Carey - The Emacipation Of Mimi [I really hate that slut, but I heard the album, and I must confess that despite the singer and the pop-shity-lyrics, the album is some kind of return to the Mariah of the beginning. It's enjoyable to listen]

4. Coldplay - X&Y

7. The Raveonettes - Pretty In Black
8. Nine Black Alps - Everything Is
9. Oasis - Don't Beleive The Truth
10. The Magic Numbers - The Magic Numbers

these lists are all interesting, proof that 2005 was a great year for music. but i can't understand how nobody has mentioned the Broken Social Scene album...top to bottom it's my favorite of the year. throughout the album the songs are simultaneously catchy (thanks to terrific songwriting and a wonderful sense of melody) and challenging (due to the above mentioned songwriting talent and, perhaps moreso, due to dave neufeld's sloppy, artsy production). i haven't enjoyed an hour in front of the stereo so much since their last album. certainly my #1 album of 2005. i can only imagine nobody has heard it. track it down and listen, i'm sure some of these lists would change...

I just haven't digested it all yet. So far I'd say it's a good album, but suffers from comparisons to You Forgot it in People.

fair enough, but the point of these lists is to stack it up against other albums from this year - no doubt that 'you forgot it in people' was brilliant, likely not to be surpassed. but in my eyes, 'broken social scene' is head and shoulders above everything else i've heard from this year - oasis, coldplay, bloc party, beck, deathcab are all great, but none are as good as 'bss'.
except BRMC. that one was a shocker, i'm stilll sorting that out. who knew they had it in them. who knew anyone had it in them.

In a couple weeks when I list my top 20, I can almost guarantee BSS will be in there. BRMC is another one I'm still listening to. Indeed a surprise.

He scares the shit out of me. When I heard "Is There Anyone?" for the first time I felt myself turn green with fear and broke out into cold sweats. :yikes:
