The "Desert Island Album" Game Master List

Well, after an excessively long period of compiling tracklists and debating various other rules and concepts (sorry, everyone!), the competition is finally under way! And it's under way with this monster of a post.

First, I shall present the diagram of the tournament format followed by the schedule. Second, I shall offer links to compilations that have been uploaded, and as I expect more will come, I will ask the mods to edit this post to include them and I will notify everyone that there's a new link in the regular poll threads. (*NOTE FROM BONOCHICK* - Links to officially released music are NOT allowed and will be removed!!!) Third, I shall present the actual albums, which come with a paragraph explaining the compiler's choices if they elected to write one. Again, more may come and shall be edited in to this post as required.

I apologise if anyone has sent me any information and it is not included in this post. Please let me or a moderator know and it will be inserted.

THE TOURNAMENT FORMAT AND SCHEDULE

COMPILATION LINKS

Remove the space between "save" and "file" for the links to work.

Some contestants have chosen not to include the U2 songs in their compilations as this is a U2 fan forum and it's assumed people here will likely know the songs. Some contestants have uploaded ZIP files of each disc, some have uploaded individual MP3s, and some have done both.

*LINKS REMOVED BY BONOCHICK*

These links can also be found with their respective compilations. I have sought to provide the links two days before a round, and as inmyplace13 and namkcuR face off in two days, I would encourage people to sample their compilations first.

THE TRACKLISTINGS!

Here's the big part. I've largely standardised grammar so that there's no confusion, but I didn't touch different ways of writing numbers simply because that would've meant too much work. I corrected only a couple of actual tracklistings where I saw typos I knew were mistakes, but in almost every case, I left tracklistings untouched. I absolve myself of any responsibility for mis-spelt names!

To the contestants: If I have somehow made an error with your tracklisting, or you wish to correct something (just spelling/grammar; the tracklisting contents and order stay the same if it is exactly how you sent it to me), please let me or a mod know and the problem will be fixed.

FORUM NAME: AXVER

Link: *LINK REMOVED BY BONOCHICK*

Axver writes: In creating this compilation, I sought a balance between excellent songs and flow, with flow a somewhat higher priority as I think it's no good having 12 fantastic songs if they sound awfully disjointed together. I gave no consideration to the obscurity/popularity of the music; rather, I picked the songs on their merits and to further the compilation's flow. This has led to my compilation containing a significant number of obscure songs and I would like to highly encourage everyone to visit my "save file" project to check this material out, as it's great stuff.

I tried to include a little something for everyone whilst keeping an "Axver flavour", so to speak. I tried to make one disc heavier than the other, and while Disc B is generally the heavier disc, it remarkably enough also has the softest material. I kept in mind that this is Interference, a U2 fan site, stranded on a desert island: the fans of Edge's chiming, ringing style will hopefully find music to enjoy here, especially on Disc A, and fans of U2's more experimental and rocking nineties side will hopefully also find enjoyment here, especially on Disc B. But ultimately, I chose songs that are important to me - songs with a powerful message, songs that have a strong meaning to me, or songs that remind me why I think music is such an incredible force. From the beautiful vocal harmonies between Mikael Akerfeldt and Steven Wilson on Opeth's Bleak, through to 1960's UK #1 hit, the instrumental Apache by The Shadows, I am quite satisfied with this compilation's diversity.

FORUM NAME: HIPPY

hippy writes: The songs and artists I have chosen for this mix are my identity. Each note, lyric, guitar squeal, drum beat, and vocal wail have mattered -- DO matter -- to me. They are not only the soundtrack to my life, continually playing in my head, but they are also the songs and artists that have been the most fundamental in shaping my worldview. They give me a kick in the ass when I need it, they help me cry with tears of joy and sadness, they let me be a badass, and they make me feel not quite so alone in my thoughts and feelings.

Though they are sometimes cliche, not so obscure, some old, some new, these selections are heartfelt and truly express who I am and who I want to be.

Music is identity. Here's mine...

FORUM NAME: BONOISMYMUSE

BonoIsMyMuse writes: I think my first and second discs contrast each other well in both style and theme. The first disc is made up of mostly slow songs, many of which could easily be labeled "depressing." Instead, I'd look at this disc as the first half of a journey; they're songs about being stuck in one way or another, about losing something, or about wanting something and not knowing how to get it. Disc 2, I hope, moves away from that mindset. The songs are more upbeat, and thematically they center around departure, not in a bleak sense but more in a sense of moving on and looking forward. While many don't necessarily offer a "happy ending," I think they do offer a sense of hope.

As with most compilations I make, I was very careful with the ordering of the tracks here. I worked hard to make sure each song flows well into the next. Because of that, the songs are best enjoyed in the order they appear, and not shuffled.

Brau and myself should get bonus votes for being able to get a disc to exactly 80 minutes.

I was surprised enough when you did it, and then when I got Brau's disc ...!

I'm not even going to try to make a disc perfectly 80:00!

I honestly didn't make an effort to get it to exactly 80, it just kind of happened that way when I put all the songs on there and whittled them down to something I was happy with.

This is going to be a tough competition! I can't wait to listen to all of this music!

There are a lot of really great mixes here. It's surprising to see how we gravitated toward many of the same artists and songs--I figured I'd be the only one with many of the songs on my list, especially the ones by Velvet Underground and Wilco.

I originally had a 12-minute live version of Lou Reed doing Heroin solo from his box set, but I had to cut it to make room for a few other songs. In the last few days, I've also thought of a bunch of songs I would've liked to include.

I've got to say, I think it's really unfortunate that LJT and Brau meet in the heats, as they have made two of the most diverse tracklistings here.

Of course not. I've got three Wilco songs over my two discs and I had to cut out several more than that ('Muzzle of Bees,' 'Poor Places,' and 'She's a Jar,' to name a few.)

Wilco

I'm listening to my first disc right now and I'll be damned if that live version of Spiders doesn't kick ass.

The biggest surprise for me was that Pink Floyd's Great Gig In The Sky, a song I've never known anyone to even find listenable, is on two lists here.

I made my list right when this competition began, and it's almost identical to the one I made in early April for the competition over on the Mike Portnoy forums that I was first reserve for (only part of the second disc is different). But over the last few days, I've been really tempted to make a last-minute change ... especially because Pure Reason Revolution just had to go ahead and release an amazing album after I did this compilation. But the only song I could think to take out isn't long enough to fit any of the PRR songs I want to include ...

Whoa, whoa, whoa!

The links to the MP3s have been removed. We can't have links to officially released material. I apologize if some of that material wasn't officially released, but with everything grouped together like that, it was impossible to sort.

Reminder:

Sorry, folks.

Well, my compilation is well and truly doomed now.

What shall we do? Post e-mail addresses for "samples" and I'll get the links around?

OK, folks, we've got a solution for those who are unfamiliar with the material in the compilations.

Leave your e-mail address and you will receive the solution in your inbox.
