look, i'm not trying to make light of DUI/DWI. it needs to be taken seriously and my utmost sympathies to anyone who's been a victim of DUI... but there is a huge difference between having one drink and having a dozen. just because yes, you can still kill someone after one drink doesn't mean that having one drink is the same as having 10 or more.
exxxxactly. if someone has 1 beer and drives and gets into an accident, that doesn't mean the beer caused the accident. if someone has a sip of wine at church then gets in an accident on the way home, it doesnt mean the wine is what caused it. there are lots of reasons for accidents. theres a study that shows talking on a cell phone is more dangerous than driving at the drunk .08 level.

Quote:
Maneuvering through traffic while talking on the phone increases the likelihood of an accident five-fold and is actually more dangerous than driving drunk, U.S. researchers report.

That finding held true whether the driver was holding a cell phone or using a hands-free device, the researchers noted.

"As a society, we have agreed on not tolerating the risk associated with drunk driving," said researcher Frank Drews, an assistant professor of psychology at the University of Utah. "This study shows us that somebody who is conversing on a cell phone is exposing him or herself and others to a similar risk -- cell phones actually are a higher risk," he said.

His team's report appears in the summer issue of the journal Human Factors.

well, 40% of accidents are "alcohol related," that means 60% of accidents are from sober people. frankly, it seems we should be banning the sober people instead

A much needed dose of common sense, although doubtless you'll still be falsely accused of defending or even advocating drunk driving.

It's almost impossible to have a debate on issues where the moral majority have already decided on the correct opinion to hold.

This is such an absurd and dramatic misrepresentation of what Chizip actually posted that you cannot be serious.

You must be indulging in hyperbole.

to be honest i couldnt give a shit about Paris Hilton. i just think the joy people get out of others downfalls is a bit sick.

If you're a 200 lb guy, you'd need to have 4.5 drinks IN SUCCESSION. If you space them out, subtract .01% for every 40 minutes that span your drinking. If anyone thinks it's fine for a guy to down 5 shots one after another and then get into a car and drive....I think there is something questionable with your reasoning.

Nobody gets pulled over for a DUI after 1-2 drinks. Nobody. It's not even worth discussing. Whether .08% is reasonable, however, is definitely discussion-worthy.

Question: what about the effect of medications one might be taking (particularly meds that affect the liver in some way)? Could that skew the readings?

I ask because I used to take a depression med that seemed to intensify the effects of alcohol (having one drink would feel like two, two like four, etc.)

Had to be *very* careful about how much (or even if) to drink...

Doesn't hurt that he won a World Series last year, does it.

Whatever. You're the one that brought up how hot you think she is and that the people who don't like her must be jealous.

actually, other people brought up her looks and how ugly she is. all i was saying is people on this board must be pretty damn hot and/or have super high standards to call her ugly.

You can calculate here:
http://www.healthstatus.com/calculate/bac

You must be a "little person", aka 'dwarf' then.

Honestly, with my heavy drinking, I'm a .10% after SEVEN DRINKS. Meaning at .08% with my health factor, is usually around 4 drinks, and I never ever drive after that. My having two or three drinks should not prevent me from driving home, it is not harmful. My having OVER three drinks is illegal, as it should be, and anything after four drinks is BAD.
In fact, one time my family was having dinner and my uncle is a police officer, and we were having red wine with dinner and each of us adults had maybe 3 or maybe 3 and a half, since we finished two bottles. But we had all got up to leave and drive home, apparently not even the cop sat there and counted out how many drinks or how long to calculate or estimate what his BAC level is.

BAC levels really do vary depending on a person's status, their weight, their ethnicity, etc etc.

But I'm here to say that just because someone has one or two drinks in them make them a danger on the road...

unless it's a dwarf that has had two drinks.

I personally think that .08% is a bit too strict, but for our nation, we deserve it.
We're fucking spoiled and we're fucking up this country decade by decade.
Look at fucking Paris Hilton, OK we get it, you hate prison and you think it's unfair, go the fuck away and deal with it. Stop making us hear about it by worming your way onto the View.
Go cry in your little cell. Waaa waaa.

Want someone to call a WAAAAmbulance for you?

We need stricter rules to prevent shit like this. Seriously. I'm all for .01% levels if we keep this shit up!

What drug was that?

I have to be careful too, I take barbiturates at times and sometimes they "speed up" the drunkeness...

That happened to me a lot, with my medicine. And I used to have to take certain painkiller/meds shots for a headache that I could never ever drink with and I found when I DID mix it, it caused some pretty bad behavior. And I had only drank a little.
I used to down a six pack, no problem, but this night, I went out of control!!!
I was wondering if my meds had to do with it...and I think it did.

So yes, mixing any kind of medication with alcohol DOES affect your vulnerability, even though it might NOT affect your BAC.

And you know what? They may be. But you know what? They might not be, either. I wish more people would err on the side of thinking they'd better not drive, or wait another hour before doing so.
