roy williams took a chance...

you see... a traping 1-3-1 zone is probably the hardest defense to play against, when done correctly. there is a way to beat it, but it's very tough. a non-traping 1-3-1 zone, on the other hand, is probably the easiest zone to beat. all you need to do is flash a man to the high post and the entire thing breaks down. the only thing a non-traping 1-3-1 is good against is a team that only wants to shoot three pointers.

thus then... roy williams took a huge risk by going to a non-traping 1-3-1 zone. the risk was that bruce webber would be so stupid that he'd continue to tell his team to simply chuck up nothing but three pointers.

so roy threw out the non-traping extended 1-3-1 zone and just hoped for the best.

and i guess we all know what happened by now.

roy williams deserved to win this championship. i'll be the first to say it. but not because he did such a spectacular job. he was good, nothing more, nothing less.

roy williams and carolina deserved to win this game because despite just doing an average job of coaching, roy still out coached bruce webber by about a country mile.

illinois took 69 shots... 40 of them were threes. that's an absolutely pathetic ratio. despite the patheticness of illinois' game plan... i.e. shoot nothing but threes and refuse to double team sean may... they still managed to be tied with 2 minutes to go.

and what do they do?

THEY SHOOT ANOTHER FUCKING THREE!!! HOW GOD DAMNED STUPID MUST YOU BE?!?!?!?! TAKE THE BALL TO THE BASKET... ONCE!!! JUST FRIGGIN ONCE!!!

Illinois was soooo bad with their love of threes that they had a 3 on 1 fast break in the first half and pulled up for a three.

Down two with under a minute to go, they penetrate... they have a lane to score... AND STILL KICK IT OUT FOR A THREE. Of course McCants was gonna steal the ball. You'd have to be the dumbest S.O.B. on the face of the planet not to know that they're gonna kick out for a three. They've done it all game. McCants just sat in the passing lane and hoped for the best. Low and behold, Illinois passes up a layup and tries to kick it out for three. Steal, game over.

Horrific... absolutely horrific. I'm stupified. After all the threes they took in the first half, the fact that they continued to come out gunning from three point range int he second half means that Bruce Webber either...

A) Has no control over his players

or...

B) Has no idea what he's doing.

[shameless shot at chizip]Maybe you can beat some shit ass team like Indiana by shooting nothing but threes...[/shameless shot at chizip] but you're not gonna beat Carolina like that. Despite Roy's tendency to tense up and choke in a big spot... which he came very close to doing again tonight... he's still a very smart coach. They didn't even make it tough for Roy. It was like.. eh... we're just gonna chuck up 3 after 3 after 3 and eventually hope they start falling. Even though we got 2 fouls on raymond felton in the first 5 minutes, we're gonna stop penetrating and just chuck from 30 feet.

Yayyyyy.

Congrats to UNC... Congrats to Roy Williams.

Roy... you're no longer my least favorite coach. That title now belongs to Bruce Webber.

Sean May is currently slated to be an early second round draft pick... he'd be an idiot to not come back.

wouldnt be the first time a college kid came out too early.

yea but most of the ones who come out too early are still guys who go in the late first round... may isn't even slotted to go that high. his father is a basketball guy... he knows the deal. he'd be an idiot to come out early.

and oh yea... he's already stated that he wants to come back... so i'm not just basing my opinion on my opinion

That reminds of me of Jospeh Forte. He was an All-American with UNC. He left after his sophmore year. Idiot. He had a lot of talent, he could have been really good in the NBA. But he needed at least one, maybe two more years of college. He wasn't ready for the pros yet. Period. Result: He rode pine with the Celtics and then he rode pine with the Sonics(may have been the other way around, I don't quite remember). Then he got busted for marajuana pocession. Now he's playing in either the NBDL or the CBA, I forget which one. He'll never be good in the NBA now. He blew it. All because he just couldn't wait for the paycheck. Boo.

Stay Sean May. Stay.

ya i heard him say that....hope he stays, if he gets one more year under his belt he could really improve his game even more...didnt hurt Timmy Duncan.

It just wouldnt surprise me if he did change his mind. Winning a national championship and being the MVP of it on your birthday might be a good way to go out in his mind.

joe forte was an idiot. sean may is not. forte came from an inner city / poor family situation. sean may does not.

and also... sean may is no tim duncan, and should not be put in the same sentance as tim duncan. their situations are not even remotely similar.

tim duncan would have been the #1 pick in the draft after his freshman year, sophomore year and junior year. duncan chose to come back.

sean may is a second round draft pick. under the nba's CBA, only first round picks gets gauranteed contracts. may needs to come back.

tim duncan is a hall of famer. sean may is othella harrington.

So you're saying it did absolutely nothing for Tim Duncan to come back for his senior year? Graduating? one more of year of college ball?

All I said was "it didn't hurt Tim Duncan", I'm not trying to compare the two. I think your reading too much into my post.

Secondly, are you seriously comparing Othella Harrington to Sean May? As a Hoyas fan, Harrington was Allen Iverson's bitch on the Hoyas. Shit, I'd take Jerome Williams over him in their senior years. He was a 50% free throw shooter and could never shoot outside the paint.

Sean May was almost a gauranteed double double every game this year and the biggest star on a team of All-Americans.

He'll never be a Tim Duncan, but he has a chance to be a good player in the league. I love Othella but I'm surprised he's still in the league.

Hey now don't rag on my man O, he's been doing alright for my Bulls

For the first time with what you've written tonight, I disagree. May is better than Othella. He's better than Lonny Baxter was too. I've heard that comparison. This reminds me of another player to come out of the State of North Carolina. None other than Duke's own Carlos Boozer. Again, a 2nd round draft pick...

But now the clincher. Boozer stayed 4 years.

And don't be hating on Othella. It's players like him that help teams win games! Seems to me lots of teams could use a hard working big man to help bring some energy off the bench. Or even just a player who plays with some self pride instead of a hefty contract.

May I also remind you of players who left b/c of the Tournament? McDyess(2nd round pick), Stro Swift ring a bell? And they didn't even win the Championship!

McCants is Joe Forte

Booyah! GO BULLS!

sorry, march madness thread. I'll start a Bulls one later. :)

Hehe, remember Corey Beck? He played for Arkansas with Corliss? Went to the draft early? Never was drafted. ahh stupid people leaving early. Here's another, William Avery from Duke? haha!

here's the biggest idiot...Victor Page from Georgetown.

Had a big freshman year only because he played next to Iverson and was so wide open I could nail the shots.

Then Iverson left, GU lost Jerome Wiliams and Othella, and Page was the only half-decent player left. He chucked up like 25 shots a game and shot like 35% from the field.

After the season he went out for the draft despite John Thompson advicing him not to, and didnt even get drafted.

Ran with a couple CBA teams, and I think was recently charged with a real serious felony. Smart thinking, buddy.

i'm not saying staying in college did nothing for tim duncan... i'm simply saying that he did not need to stay. he would have been the #1 pick if he had left after his freshman year. staying just polished off his game... it wa not a neccesity.

if you don't like the othella comparison, perhaps the comparison fran fraschilla made on espn radio this morning is more to your liking... corliss williamson. although frankly i think corliss was a better college player then may, i do see the comparison. a game made for college, but will only see limited success in the pro's. thus was my othella comparison... othella was an undersized center in college, but he could get away with it. in the nba he had to play the 4. he was good enough to have a productive nba career, but that's it. nothing more. it's what i see with may. a solid, semi-productive career. he'll never be the focus of an nba team. he'll always be a complimentary player. there's nothing wrong with that... it's just the way it is.

--i was never hating on othella harrington. some in here assumed that comparing sean may to othella was an insult. it was simply fact... undersized, overweight, non-athletic center who will be forced to play the 4 in the nba. their bodies are very similar, and frankly so is their game.

--lonnie baxter sucks. anyone who compares sean may to baxter is an idiot.

--carlos boozer is not from the state of north carolina... he's from alaska . the difference between may and boozer is that carlos is an impressive physical being. he's chizzled, he's ripped, he's athletic as hell. sean may, although he's lost a ton of weight since his freshman year, is still out of shape. he tires easily, and i see him struggling against bigger, more athletic players. there are no good big men in college anymore... any player over 6'9" who has talent and is athletic goes straight to the nba. we've yet to see sean may compete against players of the caliber that he'll see in the nba. that said, he's a good kid... he comes from a good family, he's a hard working guy. he'll last in the nba because of all of that... he just will never be of an all-star caliber, imo. and there's nothing wrong with that.

--antonio mcdyess was drafted 2nd overall... and before his knee injuries he was an absolute beast. he was not a second round pick.

--stromile swift was taken 2nd overall as well... in what was probably the worst first round in nba history. take a look....

2000 NBA First Round...
1. Kenyon Martin, Cincinnati New Jersey
2. Stromile Swift, LSU Vancouver
3. Darius Miles, East St. Louis HS (Mo.) L.A. Clippers
4. Marcus Fizer, Iowa State Chicago
5. Mike Miller, Florida Orlando
6. DerMarr Johnson, Cincinnati Atlanta
7. Chris Mihm, Texas Chicago (1)
8. Jamal Crawford, Michigan Cleveland (1)
9. Joel Przybilla, Minnesota Houston (2)
10. Keyon Dooling, Missouri Orlando (3)
11. Jerome Moiso, UCLA Boston
12. Etan Thomas, Syracuse Dallas
13. Courtney Alexander, Fresno State Orlando (4)
14. Mateen Cleaves, Michigan State Detroit
15. Jason Collier, Georgia Tech Milwaukee (2)
16. Hidayet Turkoglu, Turkey Sacramento
17. Desmond Mason, Oklahoma State Seattle
18. Quentin Richardson, DePaul L.A. Clippers
19. Jamaal Magloire, Kentucky Charlotte
20. Speedy Claxton, Hofstra Philadelphia
21. Morris Peterson, Michigan State Toronto
22. Donnell Harvey, Florida New York (5)
23. DeShawn Stevenson, Washington Union HS (Calif.) Utah
24. Dalibor Bagaric, Croatia Chicago
25. Iakovos Tsakalidis, Greece Phoenix
26. Mamadou N'diaye, Auburn Denver
27. Primoz Brezec, Slovenia Indiana
28. Erick Barkley, St. John's Portland
29. Mark Madsen, Stanford L.A. Lakers

of those 29 guys... k-mart, jamal crawford, turkoglu, jamal magloire and speedy claxton have had succesful nba careers... only speedy and mark madsen on that list have won championships. so you can't really bring up anything from that draft. after all, chris mihm was picked 7th.

and the person who said that victor paige was the biggest idiot... he left after his sophomore year because he thought he was just as good as iverson. couldn't return to college because he signed an agent, and then proceeded to not even get drafted in the 2nd round... he's never set foot on an nba court.

Yeah, I meant to say McDyess was drafted 2nd overall. Before the tournament, he was an afterthought to his teammate Jason Caffey.

Regardless of the draft, Swift left early(I think more b/c of grades however) and was only considered b/c of his huge potential and good tourney showing. Something lots of 6'9 guys get drafted on.

But this is all worthless information as we both agree May should return for another season. As should Villenueva from Connecticut.

i went to the welcome home celebration for the illini last night.
we arrived just as they were coming onto campus following a police escort to the football field.
it was great! the gov was there, but got booed a couple of times.
the fans really showed how much they love their team. a few of the guys got up to talk and each got a standing ovation each time.
i don't think we will being seeing any less of orange shirts around town at all, maybe more after last night.
GO ILLINI
