While I do agree that "American Life" as a whole was unjustly panned, I have to disagree with you about it being Madonna's best album. Releasing a song like "American Life" as the first official single ("Die Another Day" doesn't technically count as the first in my opinion) was such a risky move, both thematically and musically. Add the whole video controversy and dilemma, and that is why the album did not sell as well as the rest of the albums in Madonna's discography.

If she had chosen something like "Nothing Fails" or even maybe "Hollywood" as the first single, sales would have been tremendously better.

I agree with this. Hollywood was a great single, but not the typical "album announcing" song that she tends to release first. I'm not sure what other options there were.

The problem is, Die Another Day and AL were both awful, and aside from Hollywood, Nothing Fails, and X-static Process, there aren't any other standout tracks. I admire the abrasiveness of the production, but the tunes weren't there this time around. The idea that this is her best, second best, third best album is absolutely ridiculous. Not only did the public not respond favorably, but the critics weren't on board either this time (a 60 rating on Metacritic).

That's called consensus.

No - its called opinions. Mine differs. I didnt think much of AL when it came out. However after hearing some live reinterpretations and giving it a few more spins I really rate it now.

I dont really care what critics say - most dont get the chance to hear an album more than once and AL just doesnt cut it on first listen. Plus after the huge success of 'Ray Of Light' and 'Music' (which baffles me - I dont think much of 'Music') there was some inevitable backlash coming her way.

Finally I like 'Die Another Day', but agree the track 'American Life' is a bit dire. Kudos for trying something different - but no.

Nothing Fails is fucking awesome though.

I love love love American Life (except for the rap, which is ridiculous), but think Die Another Day is horrid.

I think the album as a whole isn't as great as some of you here do, but don't think it was anywhere near as bad as some critics made it out to be.

Target has it for 9.99 - I was there on my lunch hour, saw it, and it was a total impulse buy.

Can't wait to load it into the workout iPod.

I'm not sure if I'll give this a full listen. I HATE 4 Minutes, but Miles Away is very good.

Candy Shop reminds me of something Amy Poehler would spoof on SNL... That was just my impression upon hearing it on the ride back to work.

"Candy Shop" and "4 Minutes" are the weakest songs for me, but I still like them. The rest of the album is amazing. While it will never rank among my top Madonna albums, it's still a fantastic album, as a whole. If anyone is really familiar with her first album, "Madonna", this reminds me of a modernized throw-back to it.

I wasn't even a twinkle in my parents' eyes when it came out, but I definitely crank up the iPod and dance around to it now.

Whippersnapper

I used to make my parents watch my dance to Borderline - they thought it was cute, the first ten times, after that it got a bit old for them.
