Longyearbyen is, for all intents and purposes, the most northern town in the world. Sure, there's Alert in Nunavut, Canada, but it has only five people. Longyearbyen has over 2,000. It is located on Spitsbergen, an island in the Norwegian Svalbard archipelago. From mid-November through to the end of January, it is in complete darkness the entire day, and in early November and February, the sun is still below the horizon and daytime is merely indirect light. At the other extreme, April to September has no night. In a few days from now, on the 8th of March, the sun will rise over Longyearbyen for the first time in 2008 ...
