I know, maybe this thread will die in oblivion

anyway... post-rock is my favorite kind of music lately, even with its pretentious name, these musicians can communicate such deep feelings with just music (except in cases like Sigur Ros, some Mogwai, etc.), is, perhaps, very difficult music to listen, songs use to last 8, 10 or 30 minutes but I like how a post-rock song can evolve in itself and build sound walls...

for a better explanation, here: http://http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Post-rock
and here: http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=77:2682

well, now let's talk about the bands... I bet you now the obvious ones: Sigur Ros, Mogwai, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, A Silver Mt. Zion (and their changeable names), Explosions in the Sky, Tortoise, Fly Pan Am, Mono, Do Make Say Think, Hood, et. al.

but here are some discoveries, true gems:

I like also how this kind of music and doom metal are so close... Red Sparowes is prove, doom metal musicians in a post-rock band

Red Sparowes @ my space: www.myspace.com/redsparowes

ok, discuss this genre, these and other bands... you know, all that

PS: I have a doubt about post-rock and math rock... I don't get why people sometimes classify bands like Lightning Bolt, Don Caballero, Battles, By The End of Tonight as post-rock... why?!!!

depends on my mood, but i know what you mean. this shit can really suck you in and occupy the entire world. i love mogwai. their power is frightening and inspiring.
i just opened for a band the other night that i think you might like. they're from cincinnati, ohio. called johnny twenty-three. majestic waves of sound, and their cd delivers. i haven't been to their website yet (too busy digesting the music), but here's the link:

www.johnnytwentythree.com

based on what you've listed, i reckon you might like them.

mofo got me listening to explosions in the sky recently. i'd avoided them because either people i know in real life or people here liked them, and i generally don't agree with their reviews. mogwai, too.

whenever someone says post-rock, i immediatly think of fugazi, or any kind of rock band that plays weird experimental shit for the sake of being wierd and experimental. i tend to forget that some it actually sounds good.

I think mofo likes 65daysofstatic thanks to me

or at least he said that, maybe he lied :singletear:

well, post-rock began as experimental music, with noise and shoegaze influences, or something

it's just that post-rock is the stuff that all the pretentious snobby kids at college radio stations like. so since i put so much of my energy into hating those people, some of it rubs off on the music.

gotta watch out for him, he's a lying hippie.

while my tastes veer more towards traditional song structures/pop songwriting, i enjoy listening to this stuff on my headphones @ work.

im seeing mogwai on saturday, EFF YEAH!!

thank you EP, and thanks also for this new band to me

I have a little obsession of having songs by all the post-rock bands I find :shifty:

oh, that's true, I forgot about Mum

but Mum is the post-rock band and Múm is the electronica band or vice versa?

My roommate listened to Sigur Ros a lot before I moved out - that basically turned me off the them, unfortunately :|

If we want to wade into ambient music, though, Brian Eno > all.

gy!be

wow. so much to listen to!

nice thread, JintheB!!

lol
lately I'm such a sucker of all the gy!be related stuff  I just don't have Esmerine albums... I'm working on that

glad you liked

and I've listened to Johnny Tweenty-Three already... great music, I like the guitar sound, maybe I'll order their album. And Slaraffenland too, love the jazz vibe... I'm thinking in order their albums too

the problem is the damn postal service in my country, I don't trust them neither in my neighbors :|

here's another band...

they're Mexican and are going to open the upcoming Mogwai show in Mexico City this March 17 (I'll be there :hyper: )

I will have to admit that in my ignorance I have no idea what type of music "post-rock" is - but cheers for the links!

However, I bought Rachel's - Systems/layers recently on hearing some of their stuff that a friend played. It isn't the type of music I'd usually buy but I really love this album - particularly 'Water From the Same Source' and 'Esperanza'

In honor of Sigur Ros just announcing a Salt Lake City date (same week as Mogwai, how freaking awesome will that be?!), I'm digging this thread out of the grave.

I actually wrote a decent sized "Introduction to Post-Rock" article around the same time this thread was made for some of my friends. Absolutely none of them were interested in it, I'll post it here so more people can be uninterested in it. It's mainly the "big" post-rock groups since the article was written as an introduction, so it may not really tread any new ground for some of you.

There are tons of legal download links in the comments.

nice reading mofo  but I can't call Broken Social Scene a post-rock band (because I'm so orthodox when is about post-rock)

glad you're back, btw

what about a band called Boom Bip.. completely instrumental.

I saw them open for Interpol in Montreal.

they build a wall of sound, and put a mic in front of the bass drum. You could feel the bass rush through your body everytime he stomped 'er down...

I wonder if it's too much to hope for them to make another swing through DFW...

I'm bumping my own thread, because I made some kind of compilation about this fabulous sub-genre

you can download it here: http://ashcities.blogspot.com/
(scroll down)

if someone wants to know more about post-rock, I recommend download that mix

How did the term post-rock come to be? Kind of the stuff that happened after rock stopped being exciting or fresh and we needed some cooing and xylophones?

haha, post-rock is a stupid term, indeed, but I don't know how to call this kind of music anyway

it's something with "post", definitely, because it's like post-apocalyptic music

Tortoise is one of the classics

hey, IWB, I love Té now, I remember when you mentioned them as a post-rock band with ridiculous long song titles
