Lane Stahley---R.I.P.

Sad but true.....

The body of Alice In Chains lead singer, Layne Staley, was found late Friday night in his home near Seattle.

Staley had a long and frustrating addiction with heroine. It is assumed that Stahley died of a drug overdose and that he was dead for several days.

For those of you who may (or may not) have experienced the Seattle scene in it's glory in the early 90's(I was in high school) you will realize the effect that Stahley had on music and many people in general.

His voice was powerful, gripping and INTENSE. Just when you thought you were in such a bad mood that no one could understand what you were feeling, there was Stahley's voice and you found someone who could empathize with you.

That makes 2 out of 4 of the big Seattle bands(PJ, AIC, Nirvana and Soundgarden) lead singers who lost a battle with heroine.

Whiney, annoying, minimalized talent teens and twenty-somethings make a ton of money and are the "it" thing even though they can't sing and a great voice like Staley's is silenced forever. Life just isn't fair.

I am very surprised that there hasn't been any reports on the Seattle news stations yet. The Seattle-Post Intelligencer broke the story....

I think they have to be careful....although they never are. When Kurt Cobain was found...the TV news said the same thing "unidentified body"....but the radio said it was him from the beginning. The radio doesn't care, they'll say whatever.....
Oh sh*t, they just said it on the news, as I'm typing this....my heart just sank again....

OK, they just had a big thing on TV....I guess it was all over yesterday, mostly the radio. So I guess Seattle knew yesterday.........but I didn't.

Man, I don't even know what to say. I also thought he had been in recovery. I'll never hear "Over Now" the same way.

it's sad that such an influental music scene had to be associated with death and heroin. layne staley had a great voice which helped establish alice in chains as a great definitive rock band. he had such great talent, but now it's all gone. just like the whole seattle scene. it seemed like all those bands wanted to sabatoge their careers you know. but i guess it's expected from people that were rock stars trying their hardest not to be rock stars.

There is still a very vibrant music scene here in Seatlle, its just the majority of you dont hear about it because the media has chosen to turn its eye elsewhere. We dont have a problem with that. We are glad to be out of the spotlight again. In the nineties, the mainstream music industry swung into town and exploited all the local talent and then moved on to the next "big thing" when they grew tired of us. There were great bands here before they disovered us and there are still plenty of great local bands here. I dont mean to sound defensive, maybe that is not what you meant to say, it's just a pet peeve of mine. I guess I get tired of hearing people say that Seattle music began and ended with grunge. "Grunge" was just a label created by some lame critic. It doesn't mean anything.

If you think our scene is dead, check out this week's top twenty local bands from our alternative weekly, The Stranger:

i'm sorry, i worded that wrong, i meant the whole early 90's seattle scene. sorry. i have a death cab for cutie cd that my girlfriend made me, they're alright. i remember the supersuckers from a long time ago, and i've heard a little bit of modest mouse. it's just weird that all those early 90's seattle bands couldn't stick it out for ten years.

one band that i really liked from seattle that wasn't even associated with the "grunge movement" was sunny day real estate. they put out one of the best albums of the 90's, diary, and they didn't last that long either.

but yeah, seattle is still churning out good music. like you said it's no longer in the public eye, which is probably what a lot of people wanted all along.

Fuck, this really fucking sucks. Not only because Alice In Chains were a great band, but we lose another singer this way. I mean Cobain, Brad ? from Sublime, didn't the singer (Shannon Hoon?) from Blind Melon OD. And there was the guy from the Pumpkins. And of course these are just some of the BIG ones, how many more till these guys realize that the needle dosen't give them talent, God did. Well whatever, or whoever you believe in, DOnt play with FUCKING FIRE!!

But I am sorry for the outburst.

RIP Layne Staley, may GOD be with you and your family
