And  you told me that story. That's just hilarious.

I'm certainly in no hurry to take photos from traffic! I'll take them from the footpath or tram stops or the Bourke St stairs at Spencer Street Station, thank you very much! I wish to live.
*makes note - Ax has already heard all my tram-related anecdotes*

Living is good.

Well, I've not encountered inspectors on trams, so that's ok.

On trains, nobody asks, and everyone stares. I think they usually pretend it's a fishing rod (the spear head is covered, but a bit of the butt sticks out) or conveniently go blind. I also usually look pretty angry whilst carrying them (they're heavy!)

Ali: it was great, during o-Week, the security guards asked us to sheath all of our weapons. We got annoyed, and moved to one of the lawns. Two cops walked right past us as we were practicing and were practically going "OH COOL I WANNA DO THAT!"

I've only ever walked past it, it's probably mostly models and things, and it's not really extremely visible. But I can show you where it is, at any rate :)

:hyper: :hyper:

I need to get back into model railways. Only two things:

1. I don't have anything remotely resembling sufficient space.
2. I don't have anything remotely resembling sufficient funds.

I was into Warhammer at one stage, then realised that it'd suck so much money out of me that I'd be living on water during uni. I kinda stopped then.

Model railways anything like that?

Bringing your spear and swords on Thursday?

That could be a bit of a crimp on your plans, all right.

Now you've reminded me of Red Dwarf... let me see if I can quote this...

Kryten: *describes dire situation they are in*
Cat: "Well, let's put on the jet-powered rocket pants and junior-bird-man the hell out of here!"
Kryten: "An astute and inventive suggestion, sir, but for two tiny drawbacks. One; we don't have any jet-powered rocket pants, and Two; there is no such thing as jet-powered rocket pants outside of the fictional cartoon, Johnny Rocket Pants."

Warhammer is comparatively cheap, I'd say.

Especially if you model New Zealand like I do. You can pick up some fairly cheap mass-produced shit for US prototypes, but Australia (especially outside NSW's railways) will screw you and New Zealand's even worse. I will probably have to make a lot of models myself - and my practical model-making skills are pathetic. I'm an operations man. It will surely come as no surprise to anybody that I can do really spiffy timetables.

Unfortunately no, I usually only train on Tuesdays. Maybe later in the year!

It does mean though, if you go to those concerts at Union House, I do stand out from the crowd just a bit if I have my spear.

I've never actually watched Red Dwarf. I suppose I should sometime.

That's what I kept meaning to clarify...

That uncle of yours that found himself standing next to Bono at the mixing desk (or whatever they call that thing with all the knobs and buttons and blinking lights) at a Sinead O'Connor gig...
... was I having a deaf moment, or did you actually say that Bono kissed him??

 Something makes Warhammer look cheap?!

And don't forget to mention it to U2 - increase your chances of being hired as setlist manager

Ah, righto. Well, I would quite like to come along to at least a couple of the concerts. I think it'd be good fun.

Unless I was having an equally deaf moment when he told me the story, and I don't think I was, then YES.

... I know. Keep in mind, this was the mid-90s. Bono was probably stoned and thought it was an arty thing to do.

A dream model railway will cost you hundreds of thousands of dollars. Even just a small one can go into the thousands for the trains alone.

YOU MUST. This is not optional. At least, seasons 1-6 are not optional. The later ones I can live without. (One of the writers left and it got very stupid.)

There's another bit like that shortly after...

Cat: "I know! We can blast them with the laser cannons!"
Kryten: "Another excellent idea, sir, but for two more tiny drawbacks. We don't have any laser cannons, and we don't have any laser cannons. Now, I realise that is technically only one drawback, but it was such a big one that I thought it was worth mentioning twice."

DAMN. That's because you buy replicas and don't make your own yeah?

The only reason I could afford Warhammer was because I had above-average converting skills, meaning I could make a more expensive (when sold and not made) model from a cheaper model.

Blimey.

He must still be smoking the wacky tabaccy, cos he seems to like snogging Adam and Edge onstage.

Friend of mine in Canberra is into model trains... I must remember to save the URL of the web page he's documenting things on. I'd ask him now but he just went to bed.

Which means I really should too...

Scratch-building model trains, especially the locomotives, is extremely difficult. Unless you have very specialised skills, you're going to have to buy the motor and wheels, and those don't come cheap.

Model railways are also extraordinarily large. In HO scale (1:87), the most common scale, a 4 foot by 8 foot layout is considered small. I would find it far too limiting. When I build a model railway, I will use an entire room. A very large room, like a garage or a basement. And I'll probably be modelling in TTn3/NZ120, which is 1:120.

I'll probably buy models of foreign trains and just do what I can to alter them to look close enough to the Kiwi ones I want.

G'night, Maj.!

I'd say the same to you, Ali, but I'm expecting you to hang around for another thirty minutes at least ...

But no love for Larry? I suppose he doesn't feel emotion. Except when he's listening to his Westlife CDs.

I would imagine that Mr Mullen would whack him with a drumstick if he ever tried... Adam and Edge can't defend themselves so much.

Ah, that sounds cool, I'd certainly be interested in having a look.

And wow, it's past 12:30am. At least I don't have uni tomorrow. I'll have to send you an e-mail re: Thursday.
