No, as these scientists weren't stupid. They just didn't know it was dangerous. Often, what happened to them made them (and other people) find out what was dangerous.

Yeah, Marie Curie was such a legend. She achieved so so very much. Theres a lot of death on the wayside to brilliant discoveries, unfortunately.
