But Mercy sucks.

Am I the only one who finds the Pop bashing more about greed than about artistic criticism?

I think the verses are alright when it doesn't have that silly guitar looped over it. But I don't like the chorus or the bridge.

Sure.

Here's the Please edit I did. bono_212, it may or may not be the exact same one you had before, as I improved on an earlier version.

I think Mercy's a semi-interesting demo. It has to be significantly smoothed out though, and the annoying backing track has to be clipped out.

Well, they say they figured it out live and that on some nights Popmart made the whole thing make sense. I agree with them on that: they figured it out live. It was just too rushed. They had good material there, at least, whereas they didn't at Zooropa.

The way the talk about it seems more like a financial disappointment then an artistic one. I think the album was fine as is. Like Khan said I guess 50 million records wasn't enough.

i do agree with you, to an extent. it just seemed...with the release of atyclb, they became so commercial. i don't mean they sold out, to get technical, some would argue they "sold out" long ago. but i don't care about that shit anyway.

anyway, with the release of atyclb, bono kept saying their goal was to be the best/biggest band in the world. clearly, by other things he said, it meant sell the most records. nothing wrong with lining your pockets a little more, but there was no need to treat pop like some bastard child just because it didn't sell as much as others. and besides, what about zooropa? that album sold a tad more than pop, and i wouldn't say either of those lived up to U2's standards sales-wise. so why did pop bare the brunt of the criticism among not just the band, but fans as well? whenever you hear a 90s album get dissed, 99% of the time, it's pop. i know it's overblown, and if you don't like electronic music, then you hate it. but geez. to me, i don't think it's good when the artist criticizes their art.

I think the album is a huge underachivement, just like Achtung Baby.

They got:

Do You Feel Loved?
Staring at the Sun
Last Night on Earth
Wake Up Dead Man

Right in the studio. 4 of 12. Then:

Discotheque
Mofo
Last Night on Earth
Gone
Miami
If You Wear That Velvet Dress
Please

Right live. 7/12, but one's on both lists, so a total of 10.

IGWSHA and Playboy Mansion just aren't any good.
