I get that a year after the birth of Christ is AC.. After Christ..

BCE is before common era

You've got them backwards.

It's BC and AD.

BC = Before Christ
AD = Anno Domini (The Year of our Lord -- it's Latin)

But now to get away from Christianized dating (it's not PC), they use BCE and CE. The dividing line is still the same (year "1"), but now they stand for Common Era (AD) and Before the Common Era (BCE).
