MirrorballGirl > I ran out and bought "Yankee Hotel Foxtrot" based on the song you put on my mixed CD. I love it. While familiar with them (and Uncle Tupelo) for a long time, it's the first CD I actually bought. Now I'm going to play catch-up.

Wilco Make New EP Available for Download
Are they trying to break our balls?
Marnie Christenson reports:
As we recently reported, Wilco shelved their long-anticipated Kamera EP. Or did they? Nope. They lied-- or maybe pulled another one of their grazy publicity stunts-- and now the EP is available to either download for free in MP4 format if you're a proud owner of a legitimately purchased copy of Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, or to listen to via a Quicktime stream if you're not. The guys even put up some slick-ass cover art to boot. Oh, and, um, it's not called Kamera, it's called More Like the Moon. The official Pitchfork Newswire CD-R copy now reads: More Like the Moon/ Kamera/ Camera/ More Like the Moon EP. It's ------' ugly!

Turns out that enhanced Yankee Hotel Foxtrot CD-- you know, the one that bugs the living shit out of you when all you want's just want to listen to it on your computer-- is good for something after all. You just drop the CD into the tray, and click "Skip Intro". Then connect to the web and at the menu, click on the link to "Wilcoworld.net." You will then be taken to a supersecret special page that hooks you up with the download. (You'll need Quicktime 6, too.) Although, if you needed these instructions in the first place, you're probably my dad and prone to inserting CDs into the tray upside down and shit.

The More Like the Moon EP was originally issued in Australia in January as a bonus disc to the Yankee Hotel Foxtrot release there. In other words, it's been available on your favorite file-sharing system (as have all the incredibly weird album demos, but that's another story) since the time it took to rip the first copy immediately after that. The EP was originally slated for release domestically, but Tweedy & Co. apparently had a change of heart, concluding that they'd rather just say "thanks." All like, you know, for the kids stylie. As the band's digital strategist (they have a ------- digital strategist?!), Ken Waagner, told the Chicago Tribune, Wilco decided "that they didn't want to sell a 21-minute record for 10 bucks or whatever it would cost to get into stores." The kindness!

And so, the issue is settled. One more time, just for grins, here's the tracklist:

01 Camera
02 Handshake Drugs
03 Woodgrain
04 A Magazine Called Sunset
05 Bob Dylan's 49th Beard
06 More Like the Moon

These six songs include one outtake from the Yankee Hotel Foxtrot sessions, "A Magazine Called Sunset", and a grittier version of "Kamera"-- which warranted the harder "c" instead. The remaining four songs are a glimpse of the latest Wilco lineup: Jeff Tweedy, John Stirratt on bass, Glenn Kotche on drums, Leroy Bach on various instruments, programmer Mikael Jorgensen... and a digital strategist to be named later.
Well, actually they provide three options for the title/cover.

1) The Australian EP with a platypus on the cover.
2) The Bridge Ep with a...er...bridge on the cover.
3) More Like The Moon with what looks like a lunar eclipse on the cover.

And why is this lady so bitter?? They don't have to offer this for free. It would be kind of nice to be able to buy it in a store with the pretty cover and everything but this is cool in its own way. And they never said the EP was going to be shelved so they didn't 'lie' or pull a publicity stunt. Some music news service reported that and they corrected them. Also, it's not ugly.

But YAY for the EP!!!

Well then, you'll be pleased to know that I also bought Neutral Milk Hotel (I got kind of obsessed with that King of Carrot Flowers song) and Elbow! In fact, your mixed CD ended up setting me back a few bucks.

I would LOVE to see Wilco. In fact, I was really, really sad to have been on the road without a computer when tickets to REM/Wilco went on sale at the venue nearest me, which was still a 6 hour drive to Denver but I'd have done it. I haven't seen REM in years and Wilco would've been icing. I'm still hoping a show might get added here this summer.

But you can still get tickets to the Denver show!! Wilco's website is going to be doing a sale of it's own stock of tickets at some point, so I'm sure you could grab one of those.

Besides, Mirrorball Girl and I are actually going to go to that show (in other news, yes, we are insane). And you wouldn't want to miss THAT now would you?

Oh my God, you're kind of getting me all excited now! Where, when, how can I get good tickets?? Where are you sitting? Right now they're offering row 35 and if I drive for 6 hours I need to do better than that (although Red Rocks is so small I'm sure there are no bad seats).

We both have general admission tickets. Not that you have to get those, too, but that's what we have. And if you're not happy with the seats you're finding, there's always the impending sale at Wilco's webiste. No word yet on when it's actually going to happen, but watch this page for updates:

Okey dokey...

My next question is which show are you going to? I see they've added a second one on Sunday 9/14.

We're going to the 9/13 show. Wilco isn't opening for the 9/14 one.

Btw, it's really bizarre the way these tickets are being sold in so many places at so many different times. There were two different fan pre-sales, the regular onsale, and the Wilco sale which hasn't even happened yet. I guess it gives people more chances to get tickets, but it's just a little confusing...

Last time I was in St. Louis, for spring break, my friend Robin took me on an impromptu "Wilco tour". We hung around Laclede's Landing (The Landing in Heavy Metal Drummer), hung out in the Casino Queen (which is a riverboat on the Mississippi), then took the train from St. Louis to Belleville, which took about 15 minutes.
If anyone wants to see why so much of their music is depressing, go to Belleville, IL, haha.

Anyhoo, just thought I would share! Here's the Casino Queen in front of the Arch:

Ah, you've possibly saved me from making a disastrous mistake.

You know, I work in the literary world and a lot of writers and brainy literary hipsters think Jeff Tweedy is the best songwriter alive right now.

New FREE Wilco EP!

http://wilcoworld.net/enhanced.html

Streaming the new EP (6 songs), and If you purchased YHF, you can use the code on the back of the liner notes to download both a cover picture (for the jewel case and all the tracks.

I'm listening to it now and it's pretty much in the same vein as YHF. Pretty cool stuff - and it's free!
