You probably won't love to hear my comments and criticism, and I'm going to get flamed, but this is how I see it:

If COLDPLAY is the next generation of rock, then yes, rock is truly dead and may it rest in peace. They do not rock. Okay, so they're very popular here and so many of you love them, fine. But they do not rock. They are a soft rock, piano oriented in a Barry Manilow way, boring, slow band.

My local radio stations and cd stores put them in the same category as Matchbox 20 and Train, and I agree! They are called "mellow" and "new adult contemporary."

I also can't understand why they are called a band with something to say. "Look at the stars, see how they shine for you, and they were all yellow too!" "Closing doors and ticking clocks, you, are" I've heard hair metal and rap with more meaningful lyrics. Again, don't flame, if you like them it's your business people. But ROCK? Noooo. Saviors of rock? I don't see how. They are not rock, and that is not just my opinion, or the stations and stores would not see them as Matchbox 20 and Train contemporaries, which, even if you don't want to hear it, they are!

Despite your cheerful optimism, Rock is dead and stays dead.

Don´t forget the 80s. What we think to be rock nowadays is just a retro thang. There´s music that rocks, sure. But the spirit of Rock is dead as ever.

I do consider Bono to be 100% of rock, though.

There are a lot of great bands out there, but I agree with HipHop. Rock died a long time ago. And I like it like that.

*kicks rock while it's down

I think if you're waiting for the rock music to come to you, then yes, rock is dead. But if you're willing to search it out, there is some great rock and roll out there--music that has both the sound and spirit of rock. Yertle is on to something...if you want Rock, take a good listen to Placebo, Manic Street Preachers, Idlewild (thanks, mofo!), Radiohead, Stereophonics, Oasis, or tons of other rock bands that are out there rocking their asses off. The only difference is that the industry is so streamlined you're only going to hear what they want you to buy, and the chances of that being good music are slim to none.

I for one do not think rock is dead. It's just hiding out in some very cool places, including my CD collection.

I agree. Wasn't there once a time when mainstream rock band were good?
Like back in the 80's early 90's cool bands like The Cult, Stone Roses, GnR, U2, Def Leppard, etc. where bands that were mainstream but good? Those days are so far away now. Because now is crap.

Need a mediocre rhythm guitar player?

Dueling guitars ala Dickinson and Maiden?
